October 17, 2024

Solas is hailed by The Boston Globe as “the finest Celtic ensemble this country has ever produced” and The Wall Street Journal as “an Irish traditional band bearing all the marks of greatness.” Since forming in New York City in 1995 they have been a galvanizing element in the Irish music scene – a lightening rod of talent and inspiration that set new standards for musicianship, repertoire, and intensity. Over the course of twelve critically acclaimed albums and endless international touring, Solas brought their love and respect for the traditions of Irish music, and their sense of melodic and instrumental adventure to the world.

In 2017, after a remarkable two decade career, Solas decided it was time for a break. Now, after eight years, the break is over and Solas is back and ready to celebrate their 30th Anniversary!

Music Dialogue with Heiichiro Ohyama

by Gina Graham
October 16, 2024

Just as a chef’s table experience offers unparalleled proximity to the culinary action, “Music Dialogue” allows you to witness the creation of unique masterpieces with renowned musicians in real time. The event begins with appetizers & cocktails in the Lobero Courtyard, followed by an on-stage performance at 6:30 PM. This exclusive behind-the-scenes event fosters a deeply immersive melodic adventure that transcends the traditional concert-going experience.

Beginning with an impromptu riff, acclaimed Music Conductor Heiichiro Ohyama and four former members of the Chamber Orchestra (Amy Hershberger, Joel Pargman, Colleen Sugata, and Trevor Handy) will navigate new territory, performing Mendelssohn String Quintet No.2 in B flat major, Op.87, the third movement: Adagio e lento together for the first time. Observe their trial and error as the artists try to recreate the composer’s intent, breaking down the reasons behind artistic choices and deconstructing manuscripts to uncover their hidden meanings.

Then sit back, relax, and experience the magic as the musical piece is performed by the ensemble in its entirety. Afterwards, gain new insights with a special “Q & A” with the performers – lead by Concert Navigator Miho Ito.

This event made possible by the generosity of Mahri Kerley.

5:30 pm ~ Enjoy appetizers & cocktails in the Lobero Courtyard
6:30 pm ~ On-stage performance with Heiichiro & Friends
Dialogue between guests and musicians following the performance.

Leo Kottke 2025

by Josh James
October 1, 2024

Famed solo acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. The artist overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. When he picks up a steel-stringed guitar, his fingers race across the strings with uncommon speed, developing a deep, churning groove that can at times sound like several people playing at once.

Now 79-years-young, Kottke has recorded over 30 albums that showcase his barnstorming fretwork and quirky songwriting. In concert, playing his six and 12-stringed guitars for appreciative audiences across the globe, he intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career. Kottke is a master of the guitar, whose playing has influenced generations of musicians and listeners.
