Wallflowers 2025

by Josh James
December 10, 2024

For the past 30 years, The Wallflowers have held their ground as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. The group broke through with their sophomore album, 1996’s multi-platinum Bringing Down the Horse.

While Jakob was initially best known for being the son of iconic singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, the Wallflowers made it clear that he had a sound and creative voice all his own, and he proved to be a strong bandleader who was capable of keeping the group’s personality consistent, despite frequent personnel changes through their history.

Their latest studio offering, Exit Wounds – released in 2021 after a nine-year hiatus – marked the first new material since Glad All Over. And while the wait had been long, the much-anticipated record found the GRAMMY® Award-winning band’s signature sound – lean, potent and eminently entrancing – intact, even as Jakob Dylan surrounds himself with a fresh cast of musicians.

Valerie June 2025

by Gina Graham
December 3, 2024

Valerie June

Valerie June Hockett is a Grammy-nominated artist from Tennessee. She’s been hailed by the New York Times as one of America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents.”

A musician, singer, songwriter, poet, illustrator, actor, certified yoga and mindfulness meditation instructor, and author, she honorably served as a Turnaround artist working with students for the President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities and continues serving through The Kennedy Center. She has recorded three critically acclaimed, best-selling solo albums and has also written songs for legendary artists such as Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

She’s been featured on The Tonight Show, CBS, PBS, Austin City Limits, Later with Jools, and many more. An Amazon #1 Best Seller in poetry, her first book, Maps for the Modern World, is a collection of lyrical poems and original illustrations about cultivating community, awareness, and harmony with our surroundings as we move fearlessly toward our dreams. She is the author of the children’s book Somebody to Love: The Story of Valerie June’s Sweet Little Baby Banjolele, published by Jack White’s Third Man Books. When she’s not touring, she splits her time between Tennessee and New York.

Mick Flannery

‘Mick Flannery has a voice for the ages, a complete Master of his craft” cited by Clash Magazine, whilst The Sunday Times said he “conjures up exquisite story-telling.” His latest offering, ‘Goodtime Charlie’, Flannery’s eighth studio record, went straight to No. 1 at home in Ireland on the independent charts, and No. 2 on the Official Charts, Making it his sixth top 5 record to date, with 3 Number 1 records already under his belt. ‘Goodtime Charlie’ is also the first international signing for John Prines beloved Oh Boy Records.

Mick Flannery’s songs are fluent in expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty. His live shows are renowned for his self-deprecating humour, audience engagement and the ability to bring people on a journey of both heartbreak and joy, often in the same instance.

Mick has built up a reputation over the past decade as one of Ireland’s hardest working musicians, touring extensively at home and in more recent years abroad as his songs have been reaching folks farther afield. Ireland’s best kept secret appears to be no more.

Eco Hero Award 2025

by Gina Graham
November 22, 2024

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network celebrates its fifth Annual Eco Hero Award, this time honoring Natural Building pioneers Bill & Athena Steen of the Canelo Project, & Roxanne Swentzell of the Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute, joining us in person on Sunday, March 23, 2025.  All three hail from the American Southwest, they are authors, natural builders, & acclaimed artists, each one devoted to the beauty of the land, with a commitment to building with care of the earth as a priority.

Bill & Athena Steen founded the Canelo Project in Elgin, Arizona, defining their priorities as “sustainability and cross cultural relations”.  After building a straw bale home for their family in the late 1980’s, they began conducting workshops in southern Arizona, Mexico, and later around the world, sharing their skill and knowledge on how to build sustainably and affordably, using only earth, clay, sand & straw, materials all found easily in nature.

Their work in large part has been inspired by Athena’s heritage, growing up surrounded by clay artists & builders on the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico.  Also growing up in the southwest, Bill as a professional photographer was keen to capture the beauty of their surroundings, and the numerous projects they were creating.  Together they coauthored many natural building books including The Straw Bale House; Beautiful Straw Bale; The Small Straw Bale House, and The Canelo Project.  A family affair, their sons Kalin & Benito document the Canelo projects with a video series called the Nito Project.

Roxanne Swentzell is a world renowned sculptor, ceramic artist, indigenous food activist, and the founder of the Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute.  In 1986 Roxanne returned with her two small children to live on the Santa Clara Pueblo in the high desert of New Mexico, building a straw bale house where the family created a lush food forest in its enclosed earthen walls.  New to permaculture in those early days, she adopted some of its best design techniques that were culturally appropriate.  Later with community members she embarked on an experimental journey of eating only foods available to their ancestors before the Spanish arrived in 1540.  This experiment led to a marked decrease in diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure with those participating.  To complement the experiment Roxanne coauthored The Pueblo Food Experience Cookbook: Whole Food of Our Ancestors.  Today the Flowering Tree Institute has eight sites, including seed banks and intern residences and farms where workshops are held.  Roxanne’s artwork is displayed in museums and galleries worldwide, also at her own gallery, The Roxanne Swentzell Tower Gallery, located at the Pojoaque Pueblo Poeh Cultural Center north of Santa Fe.

How we continue to build will affect the chances of survival for our grandchildren.  Modern buildings are often toxic to both the builders & the inhabitants, with many becoming chemically sensitive to products used. Natural building, with materials like clay, straw, wood & stone are not only non-toxic, they are life enhancing, and if designed correctly, conserve heat & energy.  Natural building has joined the modern age with beautiful and functional structures, that are also less likely to burn in wildfires.

Please join us for a very special evening with Bill, Athena & Roxanne in person, with time for conversation and questions about Natural Building.  What is it? Why did it become their passion & lifework?  How is it different from Green Building?  What do they see as the future of natural building, especially for young people looking for a meaningful lifepath & career.

The Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award honors those individuals who have committed themselves to work in service of the planet and its inhabitants for more than thirty years, with actual solutions and concrete ways forward that benefit many, often on a global scale.

Past recipients of the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award include John D. Liu; Paul Stamets & Louie Schwartzberg; John & Nancy Jack Todd, & Albert Bates.   We are honored to have Bill & Athena Steen, and Roxanne Swentzell as the recipients for the 2025 Eco Hero Award.  A reception follows in the Lobero courtyard for all ticket holders.

Benise – 25 Years of Passion! 2025

by Gina Graham
November 14, 2024

Emmy Award Winning Spanish Guitar and Dance Spectacular.

It’s one hot night as Benise celebrates 25 years of fiery Spanish guitar and dance.

Benise (pronounced Buh-nes-say) shattered the mold of Spanish guitar by combining world music and dance – the only show of its kind!

2025 marks the year that Benise, “The Prince of Spanish Guitar,” launches his 25th Anniversary Tour. Armed with his Spanish guitar and a stage full of musicians and elaborately choreographed dancers, Benise takes the audience on a musical journey through Spanish Flamenco, Cuban Salsa, Brazilian Samba, Parisian Waltz, exotic drumming, and more!

The 25th Anniversary tour establishes Benise’s Emmy Award winning show as one of the longest running global Latin-themed theatrical productions.

For Benise, music has always been a journey. From his humble beginnings as a street performer, to being featured on the #1 rated show in the USA – Dancing With The Stars. Guitarist and creative force behind the event, Benise, comments “I wanted to push the boundaries of Nuevo Flamenco/Spanish guitar while combining the elements of dance and theater. This show is a celebration of all the shows we’ve done over the last 25 years.”

The Emmy Award-winning composer along with an international cast of musicians and dancers will entertain audiences with a two-hour show that “is an escape from all of their problems,” Benise says. Beyond the new material, Benise says “the live show will incorporate some fan favorites from my street performing days and rock classics like Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir and AC/DC’s Thunderstruck.” In addition, Benise adds his signature touch to classics such as “Ave Maria, “Moonlight Sonata,” and Vivaldi’s “Summer” from The Four Seasons.

Benise adds, “This is a great show for the whole family; I really think we have something for everyone. I hope people will be inspired by our story, by the music, by the production–and have the passion to follow their own dreams.”

Asleep at the Wheel 2025

by Gina Graham
October 22, 2024

For over fifty years, Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson has been traversing the globe as an ambassador of Western swing music and introducing its irresistible sound to generation after generation. More than 100 musicians have passed through the Wheel, but Benson remains the front man and the keeper of the vision, in the process racking up more than 30 albums, ten Grammy awards and literally millions of miles on the road.

“I’m the reason it’s still together, but the reason it’s popular is because we’ve had the greatest singers and players,” Benson explains. “When someone joins the band, I say, ‘Learn everything that’s ever been done, then put your own stamp on it.’ I love to hear how they interpret what we do. I’m just a singer and a songwriter, and a pretty good guitar player, but my best talent is convincing people to jump on board and play this music.”

Asleep at the Wheel has collaborated on records with genre-spanning friends, including Willie Nelson on 2009’s Grammy Nominated Willie and the Wheel and other critically acclaimed artists, including Brad Paisley, Jamey Johnson, Merle Haggard, George Strait, the Avett Brothers, Amos Lee, Old Crow Medicine Show and Lyle Lovett on Still the King, their 2015 critically acclaimed and Grammy winning tribute to Bob Wills. On their latest release, Half A Hundred Years , Asleep At The Wheel continued their contributions to the American music landscape when three original members of Asleep at the Wheel—Chris O’Connell, Leroy Preston, and Lucky Oceans—returned after 40 years to lend their voices and musicianship to a number of tracks on the album along with Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, George Strait, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.

Asleep at the Wheel represents an important cornerstone of American roots music, even though some of its members and audiences represent a new generation. That far-reaching appeal remains a testament to Benson’s initial vision.

“It took me 60 years, but I’m doing what I’m meant to do—singing and playing and writing better than I ever have. A bandleader is just someone who gathers people around them to play the best music they can play. I just try and make the best decisions possible and kick some ass every night onstage.”

Over the course of twelve critically acclaimed albums and endless international touring, Solas brought their love and respect for the traditions of Irish music, and their sense of melodic and instrumental adventure to the world.

Music Dialogue with Heiichiro Ohyama

by Gina Graham
October 16, 2024

Just as a chef’s table experience offers unparalleled proximity to the culinary action, “Music Dialogue” allows you to witness the creation of unique masterpieces with renowned musicians in real time. The event begins with appetizers & cocktails in the Lobero Courtyard, followed by an on-stage performance at 6:30 PM. This exclusive behind-the-scenes event fosters a deeply immersive melodic adventure that transcends the traditional concert-going experience.

Beginning with an impromptu riff, acclaimed Music Conductor Heiichiro Ohyama and four former members of the Chamber Orchestra (Amy Hershberger, Joel Pargman, Colleen Sugata, and Trevor Handy) will navigate new territory, performing Mendelssohn String Quintet No.2 in B flat major, Op.87, the third movement: Adagio e lento together for the first time. Observe their trial and error as the artists try to recreate the composer’s intent, breaking down the reasons behind artistic choices and deconstructing manuscripts to uncover their hidden meanings.

Then sit back, relax, and experience the magic as the musical piece is performed by the ensemble in its entirety. Afterwards, gain new insights with a special “Q & A” with the performers – lead by Concert Navigator Miho Ito.

This event made possible by the generosity of Mahri Kerley.
