The Hot Sardines

by Gina Graham
January 10, 2025

The well-known Hot Sardines know how to make audiences fall in love with classic, speakeasy jazz. The band has reinvigorated the music and won over new audiences worldwide – garnering over 60 million digital streams and making them “one of the most delightfully energetic bands on New York’s ‘hot’ music scene” (Downbeat).

Founded in 2011 by Elizabeth Bougerol and Evan Palazzo over a mutual love of Fats Waller, the Hot Sardines skyrocketed from the wild underground parties of Brooklyn. Described by The New York Times as “potent and assured” and The Times of London as “simply phenomenal,” the Sardines have been touring their brand of reinvigorated classic jazz worldwide behind a string of celebrated albums and over 60 million digital streams, across platforms.

Words About GOOD DOG by Bill

It seems like some of the best ideas come to me late into the night.
Tossing and turning …unable to sleep …or dreaming.
My history with Tony Scherr, Kenny Wollesen, and Greg Leisz goes way way back….with each of them separately and as a group.
We’ve traveled many miles.
My closest musical brothers.
Like a real band.
But…it’s been quite a while since the four of us have all been together.
Recently I was having one of those restless nights and it came to me.
We must get back together!
It’s been way too long.
There’s more music for us to play.
We’re just getting started.

by Josh James
January 2, 2025

Join Santa Barbara Flyfishers for an unforgettable day celebrating fly fishing, art, conservation, and community at the Lobero Theatre. This all-day event will bring together enthusiasts, business owners, policy makers, experts, and artists to share their passion for fly fishing and raise awareness for the endangered Southern California Steelhead.

Highlight will be the 2025 Fly Fishing Film Tour in the evening.

8:00 AM – 10:00 AM – Used Fly Fishing Gear Sale – On the Lobero Esplanade
There will be a sale of new and gently used fly-fishing gear donated by club members who want to pass equipment to the next generation. This gear will be very reasonably priced so that anglers at any level of experience, particularly those new to the sport, can acquire rods, reels, fishing line and other gear they might need.

11:00 AM – 4:00 PM – The Art of Grace Fisher – On the Lobero Esplanade
At the age of 17, Grace faced a life-altering challenge when she was diagnosed with a rare polio-like illness that left her paralyzed from the neck down. Despite this daunting setback, Grace’s spirit and love for life found renewed expression through the power of the arts. She is a very accomplished artist.

The Grace Fisher Foundation is committed to breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity by integrating individuals with disabilities, emphasizing shared experiences and fostering kindness. Through its multifaceted approach, the Foundation aims to create a more vibrant and inclusive society where the arts become a powerful tool for connection, understanding, and personal growth.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM – FREE Town Hall Gathering to support the “Save Santa Barbara Steelhead” Campaign – In the Lobero Auditorium
For thousands of years, steelhead used our region’s rivers and streams for spawning and rearing of young fish and then migrated to the ocean to grow and mature. Since the 1950’s we have lost 99% of these fish due to dams, over-fishing and barriers to migration. Attend to find out how you can help Santa Barbara Fly Fishers save Santa Barbara Steelhead! We need you!! Click HERE for more information and to RSVP

3:30 PM – 6:00 PM – Community Gathering – On the Lobero Esplanade
On the Lobero Esplanade, there will be a community gathering of people and organizations interested in fly-fishing, the outdoors and conservation. James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash

by Gina Graham
December 30, 2024

A show that walks the line!

For the past 17 years, Garner and his band have faithfully recreated Cash’s biggest hits with stunning accuracy in this not-to-be-missed musical event. This world-class tribute to the ‘Man in Black’ has been featured live in concert on PBS stations, and has even performed at Folsom and San Quentin Prisons where Johnny Cash recorded his biggest albums. The show is a fun, toe-tapping trip down memory lane honoring Cash’s life and music, all set to his signature boom-chicka-boom sound. Enjoy all the hits of the Man in Black – “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” and more!

Garner and his band have performed more than 600 professional shows, including a special concert at Folsom State Prison in 2008 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Cash’s infamous live album recorded behind prison walls. Gene Beley, one of two reporters in Cash’s entourage at the historic 1968 Folsom Prison concert, says this about Garner and his show:

“Garner and his band give concertgoers their money’s worth,” says Beley. “This act will not disappoint the people who wish to resurrect that classic Johnny Cash voice and rhythm.”

In addition to performing across the United States, Garner’s group has released three full-length albums, making them the most recorded and published Johnny Cash tribute show in the nation.

For Garner, the love of Johnny Cash music started at an early age.

“I started listening to Johnny Cash music when I was about 12 years old,” said Garner. “The first song I heard by him was ‘Don’t Take Your Guns to Town’ and I was hooked. A few years later, I saw the Man in Black in concert and got to meet him backstage following the show. Shaking hands with Johnny Cash is something I’ll never forget.”

Wallflowers 2025

by Josh James
December 10, 2024

For the past 30 years, The Wallflowers have held their ground as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. The group broke through with their sophomore album, 1996’s multi-platinum Bringing Down the Horse.

While Jakob was initially best known for being the son of iconic singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, the Wallflowers made it clear that he had a sound and creative voice all his own, and he proved to be a strong bandleader who was capable of keeping the group’s personality consistent, despite frequent personnel changes through their history.

Their latest studio offering, Exit Wounds – released in 2021 after a nine-year hiatus – marked the first new material since Glad All Over. And while the wait had been long, the much-anticipated record found the GRAMMY® Award-winning band’s signature sound – lean, potent and eminently entrancing – intact, even as Jakob Dylan surrounds himself with a fresh cast of musicians.

She has recorded three critically acclaimed, best-selling solo albums and has also written songs for legendary artists such as Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

She’s been featured on The Tonight Show, CBS, PBS, Austin City Limits, Later with Jools, and many more. She is the author of the children’s book Somebody to Love: The Story of Valerie June’s Sweet Little Baby Banjolele, published by Jack White’s Third Man Books. When she’s not touring, she splits her time between Tennessee and New York.

Mick Flannery

‘Mick Flannery has a voice for the ages, a complete Master of his craft” cited by Clash Magazine, whilst The Sunday Times said he “conjures up exquisite story-telling.” His latest offering, ‘Goodtime Charlie’, Flannery’s eighth studio record, went straight to No. 1 at home in Ireland on the independent charts, and No. 2 on the Official Charts, Making it his sixth top 5 record to date, with 3 Number 1 records already under his belt. ‘Goodtime Charlie’ is also the first international signing for John Prines beloved Oh Boy Records.

Mick Flannery’s songs are fluent in expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty. His live shows are renowned for his self-deprecating humour, audience engagement and the ability to bring people on a journey of both heartbreak and joy, often in the same instance.

Mick has built up a reputation over the past decade as one of Ireland’s hardest working musicians, touring extensively at home and in more recent years abroad as his songs have been reaching folks farther afield. Ireland’s best kept secret appears to be no more.

Eco Hero Award 2025

by Gina Graham
November 22, 2024

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network celebrates its fifth Annual Eco Hero Award, this time honoring Natural Building pioneers Bill & Athena Steen of the Canelo Project, & Roxanne Swentzell of the Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute, joining us in person on Sunday, March 23, 2025.  All three hail from the American Southwest, they are authors, natural builders, & acclaimed artists, each one devoted to the beauty of the land, with a commitment to building with care of the earth as a priority.

Bill & Athena Steen founded the Canelo Project in Elgin, Arizona, defining their priorities as “sustainability and cross cultural relations”.  After building a straw bale home for their family in the late 1980’s, they began conducting workshops in southern Arizona, Mexico, and later around the world, sharing their skill and knowledge on how to build sustainably and affordably, using only earth, clay, sand & straw, materials all found easily in nature.

Their work in large part has been inspired by Athena’s heritage, growing up surrounded by clay artists & builders on the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico.  Also growing up in the southwest, Bill as a professional photographer was keen to capture the beauty of their surroundings, and the numerous projects they were creating.  Together they coauthored many natural building books including The Straw Bale House; Beautiful Straw Bale; The Small Straw Bale House, and The Canelo Project.  A family affair, their sons Kalin & Benito document the Canelo projects with a video series called the Nito Project.

Roxanne Swentzell is a world renowned sculptor, ceramic artist, indigenous food activist, and the founder of the Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute.  In 1986 Roxanne returned with her two small children to live on the Santa Clara Pueblo in the high desert of New Mexico, building a straw bale house where the family created a lush food forest in its enclosed earthen walls.  New to permaculture in those early days, she adopted some of its best design techniques that were culturally appropriate.  Later with community members she embarked on an experimental journey of eating only foods available to their ancestors before the Spanish arrived in 1540.  This experiment led to a marked decrease in diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure with those participating.  To complement the experiment Roxanne coauthored The Pueblo Food Experience Cookbook: Whole Food of Our Ancestors.  Today the Flowering Tree Institute has eight sites, including seed banks and intern residences and farms where workshops are held.  Roxanne’s artwork is displayed in museums and galleries worldwide, also at her own gallery, The Roxanne Swentzell Tower Gallery, located at the Pojoaque Pueblo Poeh Cultural Center north of Santa Fe.

How we continue to build will affect the chances of survival for our grandchildren.  Modern buildings are often toxic to both the builders & the inhabitants, with many becoming chemically sensitive to products used. Natural building, with materials like clay, straw, wood & stone are not only non-toxic, they are life enhancing, and if designed correctly, conserve heat & energy.  Natural building has joined the modern age with beautiful and functional structures, that are also less likely to burn in wildfires.

Please join us for a very special evening with Bill, Athena & Roxanne in person, with time for conversation and questions about Natural Building.  What is it? Why did it become their passion & lifework?  How is it different from Green Building?  What do they see as the future of natural building, especially for young people looking for a meaningful lifepath & career.

The Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award honors those individuals who have committed themselves to work in service of the planet and its inhabitants for more than thirty years, with actual solutions and concrete ways forward that benefit many, often on a global scale.

Past recipients of the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award include John D. Liu; Paul Stamets & Louie Schwartzberg; John & Nancy Jack Todd, & Albert Bates.   We are honored to have Bill & Athena Steen, and Roxanne Swentzell as the recipients for the 2025 Eco Hero Award.  A reception follows in the Lobero courtyard for all ticket holders.

Benise – 25 Years of Passion! 2025

by Gina Graham
November 14, 2024

Emmy Award Winning Spanish Guitar and Dance Spectacular.

It’s one hot night as Benise celebrates 25 years of fiery Spanish guitar and dance.

Benise (pronounced Buh-nes-say) shattered the mold of Spanish guitar by combining world music and dance – the only show of its kind!

2025 marks the year that Benise, “The Prince of Spanish Guitar,” launches his 25th Anniversary Tour. Armed with his Spanish guitar and a stage full of musicians and elaborately choreographed dancers, Benise takes the audience on a musical journey through Spanish Flamenco, Cuban Salsa, Brazilian Samba, Parisian Waltz, exotic drumming, and more!

The 25th Anniversary tour establishes Benise’s Emmy Award winning show as one of the longest running global Latin-themed theatrical productions.

For Benise, music has always been a journey. From his humble beginnings as a street performer, to being featured on the #1 rated show in the USA – Dancing With The Stars. Guitarist and creative force behind the event, Benise, comments “I wanted to push the boundaries of Nuevo Flamenco/Spanish guitar while combining the elements of dance and theater. This show is a celebration of all the shows we’ve done over the last 25 years.”

The Emmy Award-winning composer along with an international cast of musicians and dancers will entertain audiences with a two-hour show that “is an escape from all of their problems,” Benise says. Beyond the new material, Benise says “the live show will incorporate some fan favorites from my street performing days and rock classics like Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir and AC/DC’s Thunderstruck.” In addition, Benise adds his signature touch to classics such as “Ave Maria, “Moonlight Sonata,” and Vivaldi’s “Summer” from The Four Seasons.

Benise adds, “This is a great show for the whole family; I really think we have something for everyone. I hope people will be inspired by our story, by the music, by the production–and have the passion to follow their own dreams.”
