Warren Miller 2024

by Gina Graham
August 14, 2024

Warren Miller is going big for 75 years! Get ready for unbelievable action and unexpected stories from powder stashes and chutes around the world. Featuring a diverse lineup of snowsports legends, X Games stars, and emerging talents, Warren Miller’s 75 hits theaters nationwide this fall—you won’t want to miss it!

One Up

When Shaun White, JJ Thomas, and Toby Miller gather at the top of the hill for their last run of the day, they all agree to keep it “mellow.” Except, between the living legend (Shaun), his coach (JJ), and the young comer (Toby), no one’s letting the other claim best trick, most stylish moment, or funniest burn on the way to the bar. What follows is a showcase of camaraderie on steeps, parks, and pipes … just elevated by some of snowboarding’s standard bearers.

  • Snowboarders: Shaun White, JJ Thomas, Toby Miller
  • Location: Park City

Going Massif

Ask anyone who follows the Freeride World Tour for the skier who best represents the future of the sport, and they’ll point you to Max Hitzig. Just a few years in, Hitzig has already garnered a reputation for seeing things in the terrain that his competitors don’t and doing things on that terrain that his competitors won’t. But behind this relatively unknown is a classic Austrian mountain boy who’s excited to show us his backyard: The Arlberg Massif.

  • Skier: Max Hitzig
  • Location: Arlberg Region, Austria

The LJ Henriquez Story

A snowboarder with an origin story straight out of an 80s action sports movie, Henriquez is a 15-year-old phenom from Brooklyn, NY who learned to snowboard on the indoor slopes of New Jersey’s indoor Big Snow facility, and has risen all the way to the Burton team with a bag of tricks riders twice his age needed the world’s best parks to learn. In this segment, we’re taking Henriquez on a bucket list dream trip for any skier or snowboarder: a Japanese powder fest.

  • Snowboarders: LJ Henriquez, Zeb Powell, Selema Masekela
  • Locations: Japan; Big Snow, New Jersey/New York City

Coming Down the Pipe

The future of halfpipe skiing can be forecasted in the tricks, but that only gets you a glimpse of the next winter or two. The real future of the sport is still learning how to pump a transition and which lodge has the best hot chocolate on the mountain. Follow Olympic and X Games halfpipe champions Cassie Sharpe and Alex Ferreira as they surprise the youth programs at their local hills to ski with the could be national teams of the 2034 Games.

  • Skiers: Alex Ferreira, Cassie Sharpe
  • Location: Aspen

Alpine Rhapsody

An homage to Disney’s “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, this segment tells the fantastic tale of a young skier who discovers a suit that contains the power to transform his skiing—a discovery that the suit’s inventor is not pleased about at all. Alpine Rhapsody is set to an original score, developed in collaboration with the skiers and filmmakers and recorded on the soundstage at Abbey Road Studios.

  • Skiers: Mark Abma and Noah Maisonet
  • Location: Interior BC, Mica Heli

The Blank Slate

We’re sending Lexi duPont to the biggest blank slate imaginable: Skeena, a winter camping and cat skiing operation in far north BC. Her muses? Two of the best big mountain skiers on the planet.

  • Skiers/Snowboarders: Parkin Costain, Lexi Dupont, Toby Miller
  • Location: Skeena, BC

Perspective

The Finnish ski crew Real SkiFi are established as one of the most creative groups of skiers on earth. With the cities of Scandinavia as their stomping grounds, they’ve envision—and executed—segments in places people have never considered walking, let alone skiing. In Perspectives, they’ll pair this creativity with novel post production techniques to create a series of ski stunts that warp reality and confound the audience.

  • Skiers: Juho Kilkki and the rest of the crew
  • Locations: Finland

The Transition

The path from competition success to backcountry freeriding is well ridden in skiing and snowboarding, but just because it’s straightforward doesn’t mean it’s easy. This segment explores how three elite competitors— X Games gold medalists Aaron Blunck and Danny Davis, and two-time Queen of Corbets Caite Zeliff—have navigated the physical and emotional challenge of this transition, culminating in an epic heli trip where all three riders collaborate and influence each other.

  • Skiers/Snowboarders: Aaron Blunck, Caite Zeliff, Danny Davis
  • Locations: Revelstoke, BC; Chugach Mountains, Alaska

Generation Next

Warren Miller isn’t the only legendary snowsports brand celebrating a 75th birthdays this year — the mountain where he shot his first film is, too. So it makes sense that we’ll once again crawl across the storied big mountain proving ground of Palisades Tahoe, but this time with a twist: For every famous pitch—from the cliffs of the fingers to the chutes of the Palisades to the bumps of Red Dog—we’ll ride with two generations of rippers and see it through both old and young eyes.

  • Skiers/Snowboarders: Connery Lundin, Daron Rahlves, Zach and Gael Williams, Ryan Ladd, Jeremy, Cass and Mia Jones
  • Location: Palisades Tahoe, CA

Technically Doing It

We take it to the park with Luis Medearis AKA “Cuban Lu” and the Technically Doing It crew in Winter Park, Colorado for a spring shred session. The California-born former college basketball shooting guard learned to snowboard and started filming all in 2020 fueled by the pandemic. Today, his crew is made up of mainly all the Black professional snowboarders in the world.

  • Snowboarders: Luis Medearis and the Technically Doing It crew
  • Location: Winter Park, CO

John Craigie

by Gina Graham
August 6, 2024

Much like community, music nourishes us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It also invites us to come together under the same roof and in a shared moment. In similar fashion, John Craigie rallies a closeness around music anchored by his expressive and stirring songcraft, emotionally charged vocals, lively soundscapes, and uncontainable spirit. The Portland, OR-based singer, songwriter, and producer invites everyone into this space on his 2024 full-length album, Pagan Church. Following tens of millions of streams, sold out shows everywhere, and praise from Rolling Stone and more, he continues to captivate.

“The music is always evolving and devolving with each new record,” he observes. “With my last album Mermaid Salt, I really wanted to explore the sound of isolation and solitude as everyone was heading inside. With this record, I wanted to record the sound of everyone coming back out.”

In order to capture that, he didn’t go about it alone…

Instead, he joined forces with some local friends. At the time, TK & The Holy Know-Nothings booked a slew of outdoor gigs in Portland and they invited Craigie to sit in for a handful of shows. The musicians instinctively identified an unspoken, yet seamless chemistry with each other. Joined by three of the five members, Craigie cut “Laurie Rolled Me a J” and kickstarted the process. With the full band in tow, they hunkered down in an old schoolhouse TK & The Holy Know-Nothings had converted into a de facto headquarters and studio, and recorded the eleven tracks on Pagan Church.

$1 from every ticket will be donated to Farm to Pantry.

In 2021, Farm to Pantry rescued over 350,000 pounds of produce. Since 2008, they have delivered over 4 million servings of fruits and vegetables. They do this with the power and commitment of over 500 volunteer gleaners, 400+ property owners and more than 100 community partners. Up to 40% of all food in the U.S. ends up in landfills. By diverting food waste from landfills, Farm to Pantry prevents methane pollution from entering the atmosphere; in 2021, they spared the air of 361 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

UCSB A&L – Circa

by Gina Graham
August 2, 2024

“Impressive and sophisticated contemporary New Circus at its best.” Berlin Morning Post (Germany)

“A seriously sensational spectacle: as aesthetic as it is athletic, as comedic as it is grave, and all in all, a visceral delight.” The Conversation (Australia)

A symphony of acrobatics, sound and light, Humans 2.0 is next-level circus by the Australian contemporary troupe Circa. Created by the visionary Yaron Lifschitz, this innovative new work delivers tightly-woven choreography that is intimate, primal and deeply engaged with the challenge of being human. Bathed in an ever-changing palette of dramatic, expressive lighting, 10 phenomenally athletic performers build and dismantle intricate human towers, leap into one another’s arms and push their physical limits to previously unimagined extremes. Their explosively kinetic interaction is “so remarkable as to almost defy description” (The Guardian U.K.).

Humans 2.0 is commissioned by The Mondavi Center, UC Davis

Circa acknowledges the assistance of the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

“Smart, savvy, and with her velvety soprano shot through with steel, Julia Bullock is one of the most dramatically electrifying and vocally arresting singers on today’s operatic stages.” Musical America

“Britain’s indisputably best period instrument ensemble.” The Independent (U.K.)

Brilliant star soprano Julia Bullock is joined by 23 musicians from the famed Baroque ensemble Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE). Founded in 1986, the OAE employs period instruments to realize historically-informed performances of rare beauty. The evening’s program features showpieces by Vivaldi, Bach and Pachelbel alongside arias by Handel, Lully, Rameau and Purcell that highlight Bullock’s “deeply rich and richly deep” soprano (Los Angeles Times). Although Bullock is renowned for her performances of Baroque opera roles at such international venues as the Royal Opera House in London and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, this special program represents the first opportunity for U.S. audiences to experience this aspect of her artistry.

Version 2 – Chubby Checker and The Wildcats

by Gina Graham
July 22, 2024

Come twist the night away! Join us for a benefit for the Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Centers featuring Chubby Checker & The Wildcats. The legendary icon is the only artist to have 5 albums in the Top 12 all at once and a song to be #1 twice, “The Twist.” The groundbreaking song also introduced the unique concept of “dancing apart to the beat.”

His success continued for years with the release of one dance record after another, with “The Fly” and “Let’s Twist Again,” for which he won a GRAMMY® for the “Best Rock Performance.” Over the next few years, endless songs incorporating “The Twist” into its name sprang up, such as “Peppermint Twist,” “Twist and Shout,” and “Twistin’ the Night Away.” In addition, each new song inspired a new dance involving dancing apart, such as “The Jerk,” “The Hully Gully,” “The Boogaloo,” and “The Shake.” At the forefront was Chubby with “The Fly,” “The Pony,” and “The Hucklebuck.” Thereafter, even more hit records followed.

Please consider adding a gift!  Donations go directly to the Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Centers and are tax deductible.

The Santa Barbara Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Center was founded in 2001 to provide safe and effective outpatient treatment and other services for Santa Barbara County youth struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. Since that time, two additional Centers have been opened to serve clients in the North County. Today, Centers in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc provide a wide range of services to youth (ages 10-21) and their families.

ZZ Ward

by Josh James
July 22, 2024

ZZ Ward

One of the most profound lessons ZZ Ward learned from growing up listening to the blues greats was to be authentic to your story. When the LA-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist began to write new music, she found herself in the midst of one of the biggest life changes a person will ever experience: motherhood.

The resulting music is her truest and most blues-infused to date. Freed from the pop pressures of her previous major label, ZZ is able to fully embrace the blues, her most formative influence. Her single, “Mother,” out July 19, is a wailing Chicago blues-styled song. The Mother EP, out October 4, features a mix of ZZ’s favorite Sun Records songs, and muddied-up versions of her well-known tracks to commemorate her blues liberation. The single and the EP were produced by multi-platinum producer Ryan Spraker (Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Weezer, In This Moment).

Angel White

Angel White is a fifth-generation Texas Native and singer/songwriter who blends elements of folk, country, soul, and rock to create a sound that’s uniquely his, reflecting the vast landscapes of his upbringing and untamed spirit of the West. His debut release, GHOST OF THE WEST: VOLUME I, takes listeners on a journey through soulful melodies, captivating narratives, and introspective lyrics inspired by the wide-open spaces of his hometown of Cleburne, TX, where his roots run deep with a family lineage of cowboys and century-old tradition of raising horses.

Los Lobos

July 16, 2024

For all the trailblazing musical acts who’ve emerged from Los Angeles, very few embody the city’s wildly eclectic spirit more wholeheartedly than Los Lobos. Over the last five decades, the East L.A.-bred band has made an indelible mark on music history by exploring an enormous diversity of genres — rock-and-roll and R&B, surf music and soul, mariachi and música norteña, punk rock and country — and building a boldly unpredictable sound all their own. The multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning band features David Hidalgo (vocals, guitars), Louie Pérez, Jr. (vocals, guitars), Cesar Rosas (vocals, guitars, bass, Hammond B3 organ), Conrad Lozano (vocals, bass), and Steve Berlin (saxes, midisax, keyboards).
