Music Dialogue with Heiichiro Ohyama and Friends
by Genevieve Rhiger
September 30, 2025
This exclusive behind-the-scenes event fosters a deeply immersive melodic adventure that transcends the traditional concert-going experience. The evening begins with appetizers & cocktails in the Lobero Courtyard, followed by an intimate performance at 6:30 PM, with audience seated onstage.
Step into world-renowned conductor Heiichiro Ohyama’s musical kitchen, where, for the first time ever, he and four esteemed Chamber Orchestra alumni (Amy Hershberger, Elizabeth Hedman, Erik Rynearson, Paula Fehrenbach) will come together to prepare and “taste-test” Antonín Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 97, “American” 1st Movement Allegro non tanto.
Through live rehearsal, dialogue, and experimentation, these masterful artists will chop, stir, season, and simmer Dvořák’s manuscript — deconstructing its rich layers and exploring the hidden flavors often lost in fully plated performance.
Then sit back, relax, and experience the magic as the musical piece is performed by the ensemble in its entirety. Q&A to follow lead by Concert Navigator Miho Ito. Pull up a seat at the table and join the conversation!
This event made possible by the generosity of Mahri Kerley, in memory of Bob Emmons.
5:30 pm ~ Enjoy appetizers & cocktails in the Lobero Courtyard 6:30 pm ~ On-stage performance with Heiichiro & Friends

Introducing Lookout Mountain – The Music of Laurel Canyon: a heartfelt tribute to the legendary music scene that blossomed in the hills above Los Angeles during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Laurel Canyon was a creative epicenter where iconic artists like Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Mamas & The Papas, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Linda Rondstat, James Taylor, and The Byrds gave voice to a generation through songs that remain timeless. Lookout Mountain brings this vibrant era to life, capturing the harmonies, spirit, and soul of the music that shaped a cultural revolution.

With rich harmonies and deep musicality, Lookout Mountain honors the Canyon’s golden age while bringing its enduring songs to new audiences.
Adding to the evening’s magic, renowned rock photographer Henry Diltz—whose iconic images helped define the look of the era and lived on Lookout Mountain Drive for over twenty-five years — will present a stunning slideshow before each set, sharing rarely heard stories and unforgettable photographs of the Canyon’s legendary scene. Also, Santa Barbara native, singer-songwriter and founding member of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips will be featured on a few songs.

WE ARE AMERICA Tour: American Songs That Give Us Hope
Marking the 10th Anniversary of Secular Hymns’ release, the tour reunites the singular artist with her longtime collaborators, bassist Barak Mori and guitarist Jon Herington. This dynamic trio recorded classic tunes by Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Sister Rosetta Tharpe among others in 2016, and carried the worldwide tour that followed.
Ten years on, the intimate ensemble will set the scene for Peyroux to uplift audiences with a captivating mix of originals and covers, old and new, but entirely American — from Allen Toussaint, Judy Collins, Bessie Smith and Bob Dylan, to Peyroux’s own soul-baring originals — delivered in the distinctive, intimate, crooning candor now synonymous with the artist’s name.
It has also been thirty years since the release of the breakthrough album Dreamland — the milestone recording that shifted teen busker Peyroux from the streets of Paris to the world’s grandest concert halls, cementing her status as a talent that is here to stay. With the 2026 WE ARE AMERICA Tour, we have a chance to revel in the veteran artist’s personal journey, as well as that of the world at large.
Peyroux has recorded nine albums, certified gold and platinum in several countries around the world and has collaborated with some of the finest musicians in the studio and onstage. She bravely explores new ground and transcends genres while keeping a solid jazz base, all while increasingly writing her own material. Her latest album Lets Walk (2024), comprises all new material co-penned with Jon Herington.
Currently a professor at The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, bassist Barak Mori has played with Benny Green, Eric Reed, Kenny Washington, Jim Rotondi, Peter Cincotti, Marcus Printup and Avishai Cohen among others. Jon Herington has recorded and performed with iconic band Steely Dan since 1999, Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Bette Midler and Bobby Caldwell among others. He is the co-writer and co-producer of Madeleine Peyroux’s 2024 Let’s Walk album.
Jon Muq
Uganda-born singer/songwriter Jon Muq draws from African as well as western musical trends and traditions. He devises songs as small gifts, designed to settle into everyday life and provoke reflection and resilience. With his May 31st debut album with producer Dan Auerbach and tours with Billy Joel, Norah Jones, Mavis Staples, Amythyst Kiah, Corinne Bailey Rae, and others, Muq continues to expand the scope of his music to more and more people.

Suzanne Vega will perform a career-spanning show including favorites like “Tom’s Diner,” “Luka,” “Marlene on the Wall,” and many more, plus songs from her latest album, Flying with Angels, which was released in May 2025 to critical acclaim. She will be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard (of David Bowie fame), and cellist Stephanie Winters.
The media has heaped praise upon Flying with Angels, with Rolling Stone proclaiming, “Four decades after her new-waif debut, Suzanne Vega retains her knack for lucid reflections and crisp music to match… Her voice remains both knowing and observant,” and naming it one of 2025’s best albums so far. Stereogum observes, “Veteran Alt-rocker Suzanne Vega is still making great music… It’s not an exaggeration to call her a straight-up legend.”
Finding Connecticut called a recent performance “nothing short of mesmerizing, weaving tales through her soulful songs in a cozy setting that allowed for a deep connection with the audience,” while Patch declared, “Suzanne Vega wove a spell of light and shadow, blending classics and new material with intimate stories for a memorable night.”
For more than 5 decades, Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. In between they’ve recorded 17 studio albums, 7 live LPs, 3 compilations, 2 EPs, 2 DVDs, and contributed 40+ guest appearances on their friends’ recordings—all garnering 4 GRAMMYS®, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction, the ALMA Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award, NEA and Hispanic Heritage Foundation Honors, Congressional recognitions, plus countless “Keys to the City” and “Los Lobos Day” celebrations. And those are just a few of the highlights.
But beyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others, working for peace and justice, penning some of the most literate and important music of their time, transforming the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. The young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul, R&B, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots—nourished by Norteña and rancheras, buoyed by bolero and cumbias, soaring on the rhythms of son huasteco and son jarocho.
Los Lobos have helped spread the rich diversity of cultures across every continent, throughout the global community. Kids in Antwerp now know about Aztlán. Residents of Luxor and Ghana are crooning Lalo Guerrero. People from Laos and Bulgaria are belting “La Bamba”—all thanks to The Wolves as cultural ambassadors. Talk about a living legacy. Talk about a productive half century. And in the true rebel spirit, they did it all on their own terms, against formula. For the ages. To our delight. Quite simply, they are one of the tightest, one of the best, one of the most prolific bands ever. And, amazingly, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Jr., Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, Steve Berlin.”
Dave Alvin, a GRAMMY® Award winning songwriter, singer, producer and self-described barroom guitarist, is considered by many to be one of the pivotal pioneers of Americana. Since forming the highly influential Roots Rock/R+B band The Blasters, with his brother in 1979, and through his long, critically acclaimed solo career after he left the group in 1986, Dave Alvin has mixed his varied musical and literary influences into his own unique, updated version of traditional American music.
Combining blues, folk, rockabilly, Bakersfield country, surf and garage rock and roll with lyrical inspiration from writers like Raymond Chandler and John Steinbeck, Alvin says his songs are “like California… a big, messy, melting pot.”
