by Erica Ostlander
November 4, 2025

This winter, the Santa Barbara Gay Men’s Chorus is proud to present our annual Winter Concert, No Place Like Home, Boots the House Down! This warm and heartfelt celebration of belonging, chosen family, and the magic of the holiday season will delight audiences from all walks of life. As the year winds down and we turn toward the people and places that ground us, the Chorus invites our community to gather for an evening that honors what it truly means to come home. In a season that often centers on family, No Place Like Home lifts up the joy and strength of chosen family, the friends and loved ones who see us, accept us, and make us feel whole.

Through music that spans from the tender to the triumphant, this concert reflects on the many ways we seek connection. A gentle promise to be home for Christmas, a soulful reminder that a house is not a home, the timeless comfort of home on the range, and the festive joy of Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays all come together to tell one story: the courage to love, to laugh, and to find our way home.

With signature harmonies, humor, and heart, the Santa Barbara Gay Men’s Chorus creates a one-night homecoming filled with warmth, laughter, and light. No Place Like Home is not just a concert; it is a reminder that home is not a place, but the people who welcome you in.

October 29, 2025

With his signature beard and African headgear, Billy F Gibbons is instantly recognizable and best known as the centerpiece of ZZ Top. BFG is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest guitarists working in the blues-rock idiom. The sound originates from the uncanny knack to squeeze unheard of sounds out of the electric guitar with the blues, pop, R & B, country, gospel, western, hillbilly, and West Africa. That BFG down ‘n dirty growl is unmistakable heard on such hits as “La Grange,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Cheap Sunglasses.”

Chris “Whipper” Layton holds his remarkable standings as the drummer for Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble, along with “The Arc Angels” band, guitarist Kenny Shepherd, and now marking the cornerstone backbeat with Billy F Gibbons and “The BFG’s.”

Mike “The Drifter” Flanigin is a shining light of the Texas Blues scene. A master of the Hammond B3 organ, known for his collaborations with Texas guitar legends Billy F Gibbons & Jimmie Vaughan, Flanigin is infamously known throughout the Austin Blues scene. Flanigin has done n’ played ‘em all… from juke joints, Texas and beer joints, to Madison Square Garden and beyond.

The Wailin’ Jennys

by Josh James
October 28, 2025

The Wailin’ Jennys began as a spontaneous collaboration between solo singer-songwriters at a small guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba. What started as a one-time event quickly evolved into a renowned folk trio composed of founding members Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta, and later, Taos-based Heather Masse. Their debut album 40 Days (2004) received widespread critical acclaim and earned them a Juno Award, launching them onto the international roots music scene. Appearances on A Prairie Home Companion helped boost their profile, leading to sold-out performances across North America and beyond. With their soaring harmonies and refined musicianship, the trio captivated audiences and critics alike.

Over the years, The Wailin’ Jennys have continued to expand their musical boundaries. Their 2006 album Firecracker introduced elements of alt-country, pop, and rock, and spent over a year on the Billboard charts. Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House (2009) showcased their dynamic stage presence, while 2011’s Bright Morning Stars – recorded with award-winning producer Mark Howard – combined fresh innovative sounds with the band’s signature harmonies, earning them another Juno Award. In 2017, the band celebrated their 15th anniversary with Fifteen, a carefully curated collection of some of their favorite songs, highlighting their heartfelt vocals, otherworldly harmonies, and sophisticated arrangements. The Jennys are currently on tour, while also road-testing new songs for an upcoming studio album.

Leo Kottke

by Erica Ostlander
October 14, 2025

Famed solo acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. The artist overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. When he picks up a steel-stringed guitar, his fingers race across the strings with uncommon speed, developing a deep, churning groove that can at times sound like several people playing at once.

Now 80-years-young, Kottke has recorded over 30 albums that showcase his barnstorming fretwork and quirky songwriting. In concert, playing his six and 12-stringed guitars for appreciative audiences across the globe, he intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career. Kottke is a master of the guitar, whose playing has influenced generations of musicians and listeners.
