On the heels of last year’s record breaking success with Les Miserables, The Adderley Conservatory, Santa Barbara’s preeminent Musical Theater program for youth and teens, ages 4-18, brings West Side Story to The Lobero on May 4th and 5th!

In its 13th outstanding season on stage at The Lobero, THE ADDERLEY SCHOOL’S Conservatory is thrilled to honor the 100th birthdays of two artistic giants – Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins – the creative masterminds behind this groundbreaking, timeless, heart wrenching, transformative Broadway classic.

With a revival scheduled on Broadway and Steven Spielberg’s movie remake out in 2019, the Adderley Conservatory graciously joins the chorus of artists worldwide paying homage to this glorious musical. The tale of Romeo and Juliet set to the music of Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein is all the more poignant at a time in our nation when we need to find our way back to togetherness, mutual respect and love.

An evening with Paula Poundstone

by Gina Graham
November 14, 2018

With smart, observational humor and a legendary spontaneous interaction with the crowd, Paula Poundstone is one of our country’s pre-eminent comedians. She improvises with a crowd like a jazz musician, swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net. There’s a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong.

Poundstone’s razor-sharp wit and impeccable timing make for the perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s #1 show, the weekly comedy news quiz, Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me! When asked about Paula, Wait, Wait host Peter Sagal replied, “Paula Poundstone is the funniest human being I have ever known. Everything she does, thinks, or says is hilarious. If you cut her into bits, each piece would be funny. (But don’t!). Air becomes funny having been breathed by her.”

Paula is recognized on Comedy Central’s list of The 100 Best Standup Comics of All Time. She won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic, and she is included in innumerable lists, documentaries, and literary compendiums noting influential stand-up comedians of our time.

The Capitol Steps

by Genevieve Rhiger
November 6, 2018

No one in the headlines is safe from the side-splitting satire of the Capitol Steps, the only group in Washington attempting to be funnier than Congress. This troupe of former Congressional staffers travels the country satirizing the very people and places that once employed them.

No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy?!

“They’re the best. There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” — Larry King, CNN

“[Capitol Steps] brings chuckles…rave reviews…guffaws…and bipartisan grins all around.” —Wall Street Journal

Bill Frisell

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 16, 2018

Hailed as “the most innovative and influential guitarist of the past 25 years” (Wall Street Journal), Bill Frisell has seen collaborations with the likes of Elvis Costello, Bono, Paul Simon, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic over the course of his 35-year career. His Grammy-nominated album When You Wish Upon a Star features his arrangements and interpretations of music for film and television. The album is more than an homage to a set of iconic scores; Frisell draws upon the sentimentality of music heard on screen and how it shapes and informs our emotional relationships to what we see. The guitarist will be joined by bassist Thomas Morgan, drummer Rudy Royston, and singer Petra Haden in reimagining time-honored gems like “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” as well as music from television favorites, including The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Honeymooners.
