Jazz – Eddie Palmieri
by Genevieve Rhiger
January 15, 2019
Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, EDDIE PALMIERI is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri.
His unconventional style would prove to surprise critics and fans with the 1970 release entitled “Harlem River Drive.” This recording was the first to merge what were categorized as “Black” and “Latin” music into a free-form sound that encompassed elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz. In 1975, Palmieri won the first-ever GRAMMY for Best Latin Recording for The Sun of Latin Music (he’s won ten GRAMMY awards altogether to date), including two for his influential recording with Tito Puente, Obra Maestra/Masterpiece.
In addition to the GRAMMYs, Palmieri has received numerous honors: Eubie Blake Award (1991); Most Exciting Latin Performance, presented by the BBC in London (2002); Yale University’s Chubb Fellowship, usually reserved for international heads of state, but given to Palmieri in recognition of his work building communities through music (2002); Harlem Renaissance Award (2005); Jay McShann Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), induction into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame (2008).

Jazz – Tierney Sutton
by Genevieve Rhiger
January 15, 2019
The celebrated Tierney Sutton Band, helmed by eight-time GRAMMY® nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton, has consistently topped the US jazz charts and garnered critical success thanks to their creative arrangements and rich and thematic discography. After 20-plus years and countless performances in some of the finest venues in the world, the Tierney Sutton Band has set their sights on the wide-ranging panorama of film music with “ScreenPlay.”
“ScreenPlay” spans the first century of American film music. The band gained firsthand experience in this idiom in 2016 when they were tapped by legendary director Clint Eastwood to score his hit film, Sully. The arrangements and Sutton’s readings of the songs are pure Tierney Sutton Band at the height of its powers, subtly illuminating and revolutionizing each classic, as well as introducing a few lesser-known gems.
Wanting to dig ever deeper into the material, The Band has chosen to present this creative, new music in a creative, new way. 5 acts, each including 3 to 5 songs, will be released as a digital EP, once a month, beginning in February of 2019. A podcast and other behind-the-scenes material that explores the songs and the films that made them so iconic will accompany each of these acts. In June of 2019, a compilation ScreenPlay CD will be released worldwide.

On the heels of last year’s record breaking success with Les Miserables, The Adderley Conservatory, Santa Barbara’s preeminent Musical Theater program for youth and teens, ages 4-18, brings West Side Story to The Lobero on May 4th and 5th!
In its 13th outstanding season on stage at The Lobero, THE ADDERLEY SCHOOL’S Conservatory is thrilled to honor the 100th birthdays of two artistic giants – Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins – the creative masterminds behind this groundbreaking, timeless, heart wrenching, transformative Broadway classic.
With a revival scheduled on Broadway and Steven Spielberg’s movie remake out in 2019, the Adderley Conservatory graciously joins the chorus of artists worldwide paying homage to this glorious musical. The tale of Romeo and Juliet set to the music of Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein is all the more poignant at a time in our nation when we need to find our way back to togetherness, mutual respect and love.
Hearing the hauntingly beautiful melodies of “Somewhere”, “One Hand One Heart” , “Tonight” and “Maria” sung by the extraordinary voices of these impassioned students is an experience not to be missed !
