FAF 2019 – Opening Night Concert: ANDRES VADIN PROJECT

by Gina Graham
April 20, 2019

While we often think of flamenco in dance terms, it cannot exist without its heartbeat: the music. What better way to kick off this year’s festival than by celebrating this life force of flamenco!

After enjoying the Opening Night Reception, prepare to be thrilled by the Santa Barbara debut of the Andres Vadin Project. The music concert features Los Angeles based composer and guitarist Andres Vadin, Manuel Gutiérrez (vocals, dance), Yosmel Montejo (bass), Ioannis Goudelis (piano, accordion), and Diego Álvarez (percussion). Andres Vadin’s talent spans many different genres while highlighting the flamenco guitar as a universal instrument with no boundaries — a breathtaking fusion of traditional and contemporary interpretations, often infused with Cuban, Arabic, and jazz influences.

Vadin has played for some of the most talented flamenco artists known today, including Maria Juncal, Antonio Carmona, and José Antonio Rodriguez. He has also collaborated on Latin Grammy-nominated albums twice — in 2005 with Aceituna sin Hueso on the album Cuba Le Canta A Serrat and in 2017 with Oskar Cartaya on the album Bajo Mundo. He has toured throughout the world performing with Concha Buika, Faramarz Aslani, Wadih Al Safi, Billy Cobhan, and in festivals such as WOMAD, Glastonbury, Montreal International Jazz Music Festival, and rock legend Steve Vai’s Big Mama Jama Jam-a-thon. Vadin’s work also includes movie soundtracks for Whale of the Tale and Bel Canto.

Opening Night Reception / 6:00 pm: Join us on the Lobero Esplanade for what is guaranteed to be our most exciting opening night reception yet. Mingle with flamenco aficionados as you get ready to experience flamenco’s biggest stars from Spain and the U.S. This official kick-off of our 20th year will begin with wine tasting courtesy of Santa Barbara Winery. Free to ticket holders of the Opening Night Concert.

SB Zoo – Improvology

by Genevieve Rhiger
April 15, 2019

Animal Experts & Judges Just Announced!

Joseph Brandt, Supervisory Wildlife Biologist, California Condor Recovery Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service & Tara Stoinski, PhD, President and CEO/Chief Scientific Officer, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund will serve as Animal Experts and Independent columnist Starshine Roshell and KEYT meteorologist Alan Rose take the judges’ seats.

Can California condors be comical? Do gorillas generate guffaws? And what’s so funny about a monkey’s uncle?

Find out at IMPROVology, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s science-meets-comedy show, which has outgrown its nest and flown the coop, landing at the Lobero Theatre.

Hear stories from animal experts Joseph Brandt, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologist who oversees local efforts to bring the California condor back from the brink of extinction; and Dr. Tara Stoinski, who has studied gorillas for more than two decades and heads up the renowned Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

Then LA’s Impro Theatre use these stories as fuel for side-splitting skits, songs, and silliness created on-the-spot.

Think TED Talks meets Whose Line Is It Anyway. But about condors and gorillas.

Local pianist Konrad Kono provides the mood music with Dr. Michael Schindlinger (past expert: wild parrot languages) on bass. Celebrity judges award points to each team. It’s family-friendly fun, with audience participation encouraged.

Who knew a comedy show about wildlife could be so … wild?

“I’ve never laughed so hard while learning — or learned so hard while laughing!” – Starshine Roshell, writer, columnist, & comedy connoisseur

Sponsored by friends of Ginni and Chad Dreier who share the love of the Santa Barbara Zoo. In memory of cherished Santa Barbara Zoo family members Chad Dreier (the lionheart), Sujatha (the Asian elephant), Zoe (the snow leopard), and Cito (the Humboldt penguin).

John Kay

by Genevieve Rhiger
April 1, 2019

Enjoy a specially curated evening exploring John Kay’s incredible lifetime of accomplishments from Steppenwolf’s history to John’s gradual transition into wildlife activism followed by a brief solo performance.

While growing up in Germany at the end of World War II, John Kay was profoundly affected by American rock ‘n’ roll. In 1967 Kay formed Steppenwolf, which quickly became one of the world’s foremost rock n’ roll bands. Their hits, “Born to Be Wild,” “Magic Carpet Ride,” and “Monster,” stand amongst Rock’s most indelible anthems today. Steppenwolf continued to record and tour internationally until the band’s 50th anniversary in 2018.

Today, John is passionate about raising awareness concerning the ongoing loss of wildlife and the need to protect and defend our remaining living treasures. Kay and his wife Jutta formed the Maue Kay Foundation in 2004 to support wildlife, conservation and human rights projects around the world.

It is thanks to his generosity that proceeds from this special event benefit the Lobero Theatre’s green business projects, continuing John’s passion for protecting the environment at a local level.

SB Aerial Dance 2019

by Gina Graham
March 29, 2019

The Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Dance returns to the Lobero Theatre for an evening of art and awe-inspiring dance as performers take to the air in a kinetic journey of ritual and release. Weaving textile installations from New York artist Tamika Rivera with contemporary dance and the ancient tradition of the aerial arts, the theater will be transformed into a visual narrative of colorful expression and electric strength that will leave audiences at once grounded and spiritually elevated.

Set to an acoustic backdrop of strings and percussion, and featuring metal and fabric apparatus dyed and stitched using traditional techniques from Europe and the Americas, On Threaded Wings honors and highlights the generational kinetic and artisanal practices that have been an integral part of the female experience since time immemorial. Don’t miss this transformative evening filled with magical thinking and expansive realism that reinforces women’s fundamental contribution to the fabric of civilization.

Direction and Choreography by Ninette Paloma with additional choreography by Simon Solberg, Robin Bisio, and Shelby Lynn Joyce.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Since its 2006 inception, the Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Dance has been at the forefront of a growing international movement that blends floor and aerial dance with artistic precision. From New York to France, choreographer and director Ninette Paloma has debuted her innovative approach to the ancient discipline of aerial arts with a contemporary canvas that has gained international accolades and garnered a dedicated following. Each year, students and professionals from across the globe travel to Santa Barbara to study an innovative floor to air movement language created and developed in Paloma’s Santa Barbara studio. In 2014, Paloma founded the Santa Barbara Floor to Air Festival, California’s first international aerial dance festival and artist residency platform that has served over 50 professional artists across the globe to date. Choreography credits include 2011 Vesna, 2012 Indah, 2013 The Violet Hour, 2014 Belline, 2015 Petite Fleche, 2016 Elemental You, 2017 Empathy in Blue Minor, and 2018 Sonnet of Limbs, eight evening-length works that have debuted in Santa Barbara, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Mesa, and La Baule, France.
