OperaSB – Romeo & Juliet

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 21, 2019

A letter from Opera Santa Barbara regarding the upcoming Romeo & Juliet performances:

Thank you for your interest in Opera SB’s Romeo & JulietWe are disappointed to let you know that due to the ongoing public health concerns, this production has been canceled.

Although the performances are not until May 1 and 3, since all of our productions are built from the ground up here in Santa Barbara, our artists, orchestra, chorus, and production team would have to start rehearsing in early April. Unfortunately, the closures of our rehearsal venues, disruptions in travel, the shelter-in-place mandate by the State of California, and above all our concern for the well-being of our patrons, artists, staff, and everyone in our community have made this impossible.

During this difficult time one of our priorities is to support our artists, orchestra musicians, and craftspeople who have been hit hard by cancellations locally, regionally, and nationally. For that reason, although we have to cancel the productions, we will be still making payments to all Romeo and Juliet artists and personnel.

If you have already purchased tickets, you may donate the cost to Opera SB, apply them as a credit to a future Opera SB performance, or receive a refund. To make your selection, please click here: SELECT MY TICKET OPTIONS

OperaSB – Il Postino

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 21, 2019

His job was to simply deliver the mail. But when the poor and uneducated Mario meets Chilean exile and poet, Pablo Neruda, his life is forever changed. Set in the 1950s on a small island off the coast of Italy, Catán’s stunning score soars against a backdrop of political and spiritual conflict.

Kostis Protopapas conducts. Crystal Manich, last with OSB for The Cunning Little Vixen, returns to direct. Arnold Rawls makes his OSB debut as the poet and Daniel Montenegro, last seen in 2011’s Trouble in Tahiti, as the titular postman.

As sad as it is beautiful, Puccini’s shimmering classic has been captivating audiences for over a century.  Set on the hills above the Nagasaki harbor in Imperial Japan, Madama Butterfly is a window to a world of opposing cultures and values. Join OSB for this lush and lyrical production that takes you through the thrill and anguish of love.

Kostis Protopapas conducts. Octavio Cardenas, last with OSB for 2016’s Carmen, will direct. Eleni Calenos (Mimi/La Bohème, ‘18) and Harold Meers (Le Chevalier des Grieux/Manon, ‘17 and Don José/Carmen, ‘16) return as the doomed geisha and sailor.

Cat Power

by Gina Graham
May 7, 2019

with support by Nico Turner

There are few voices more deeply embedded in the iconography and mythology of American indie rock than that of Chan Marshall. Under the musical nom de plume of Cat Power, Marshall has released music for nearly 25 years now and her prowess as a songwriter, a producer, and most notably—as a voice—has only grown more influential with time.

On her tenth studio album, Wanderer, Marshall resets her dials, offering a collection of songs that function as pristine examples of her still-evolving creative practice. Held aloft primarily by Marshall’s own guitar and piano, Wanderer is a collection of winding, wondering narratives all perfectly imbued with the kind of yearning and warmth that have made her one of the most distinctive and beloved artists of her generation.

Danceworks 2019

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 6, 2019

Award-winning choreographer and director Doug Varone works in dance, theater, opera, film, and fashion. His company has been commissioned and presented to critical acclaim by leading international venues for over three decades. On tour, the company has performed in more than 125 cities in 45 states across the U.S. and in Europe, Asia, Canada, and South America. In the concert dance world, Varone has created a body of works globally. Commissions include the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Limón Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Rambert Dance Company (London), Martha Graham Dance Company, Dancemakers (Canada), Batsheva Dance Company (Israel), Bern Ballet (Switzerland), and An Creative (Japan), among others. The Company was in residence as part of SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara in 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2007.

While in residence, Varone will create an ode to West Side Story, set to Leonard Bernstein’s iconic musical score. Inspired by Varone’s life-long obsession with the 1961 movie version of West Side Story, Doug Varone and Dancers will create a purely abstract dance work by absorbing the iconic masterpiece in all its aspects set to Leonard Bernstein’s iconic musical score. Varone will strip the Bernstein orchestral score of its narrative connotations and reimagine the score purely on the choreographic energy generated by its sounds and musical structure, and premiere the new work on September 6 & 7.

Lewis Black: Alive in Concert!

by Gina Graham
April 29, 2019

LEWIS BLACK, GRAMMY Award-winning, stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs more than 200 nights annually, to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently, a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

LEWIS BLACK came into national prominence with his appearances on THE DAILY SHOW in 1996. Those appearances on THE DAILY SHOW led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album Stark Raving Black and has published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway as well as did one of his two HBO Specials BLACK ON BROADWAY. In 2015, Black notably voiced the character “Anger” in the Academy Award winning film from Pixar, “Inside Out.”

Additionally, Lewis Black does a live streaming show called THE RANT IS DUE at the end of each of his standup performances. This show is written by the audience watching throughout the world and also by the audience in the area of each show. With so much to get off their chests, people use Lewis’ platform to Rant about what on their minds. For a view of the latest shows, and the submission form, click here.

Leo Kottke 2019

by Genevieve Rhiger
April 23, 2019

This iconic acoustic guitarist is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz and folk music, as well as syncopated, polyphonic melodies. He overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his right hand, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. At each concert, Kottke intersperses his humorous monologues with vocal and instrumental selections spanning the entirety of his career, played solo on six- and 12-string guitars.

April 20, 2019

Make a grand entrance on the red carpet along with other aficionados.  We plan to celebrate this 20-year milestone in style! Arrive early to enjoy the no-host bar while the anticipation and excitement build for the thrilling premiere of FARO.

Like a shining beacon, Eduardo Guerrero will immediately draw you into FARO (‘Lighthouse’). Inspired by a journey across Spain to discover the magic and majesty of the country’s lighthouses, this tour-through-dance starts in the north, with travels to the Faro de Peñas in Asturias, with a final stop in Cádiz, where the lighthouse plays a significant role in Guerrero’s first childhood memories.

FARO is an exhilarating, exciting, unscripted performance that fills the air with electricity thanks to Guerrero’s mesmerizing moves infused with passionate music and the vibrant colors of his changing costumes. It’s at once intense, playful, and bold — razor-sharp with calculated precision that excites with a sense of spontaneity.

Alberto Pizano Award for the Arts presented to Luisa Triana:  As part of the Red Carpet Gala and the premiere of FARO, we will open the show with a special awards presentation honoring flamenco icon Luisa Triana in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to the arts as a flamenco dancer, choreographer, and visual artist.

Born in Seville, Spain, Luisa Triana’s career in flamenco spans an impressive seven decades and includes performances in prestigious theaters in Spain and around the world, including our very own Lobero Theatre in 1962 where she returns on September 28th as the recipient of the Alberto Pizano Award for the Arts. The Flamenco Arts Festival is proud to welcome Ms. Triana back to Santa Barbara to receive this award for her many contributions to the arts.

Luisa Triana joins previous recipients Cristina Hoyos (2003), Roberto Amaral (2004), Juan Talavera (2009), and David Asbell (2017).
