Nerf Herder

by Josh James
December 12, 2025

The band celebrates the 30th anniversary of their breakout album, Nerf Herder, rocking all tracks – plus, beloved fan favorites from their multi-album catalog.

Originally released on Joey Cape’s pioneering punk label My Records, the eponymous album told tales of absurd joy and self-deprecating humor through witty high-energy songs like, “Down On Haley” and “Diana.” Upon release, lead single “Van Halen” rose to the top on San Francisco’s Live105, then spread nationwide, making Billboard’s alternative chart. The album and band were soon snapped up by Clive Davis for his Arista Records. MTV videos for “Van Halen” and “Sorry” quickly followed, as did their theme for Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and national and international tours with Weezer, The Bloodhound Gang, and more.

In honor of the 30th anniversary, a new acoustic version of the original album has been recorded by band founders Steve Sherlock and Parry Gripp with long-time members Ben Pringle and Linus Dotson. It will be available on vinyl and released at the show. Summercamp and Ridel High will be on hand to rep the remarkable cohort of musicians from Santa Barbara’s vibrant ‘90s music scene.

Premium ticket holders are invited to the Lobero’s pre-show reception and a pop-up Nerf Herder Museum featuring artifacts and ephemera from the band’s early days.

December 11, 2025

Richard Thompson’s musical influence cannot be overstated. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the ‘60s, he and his bandmates invented the distinctive strain of British Folk Rock. Thompson, who has spent over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist, received an OBE (Order of the British Empire), has been hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix,” and Rolling Stone has named him one of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. The artist has received lifetime achievement awards for songwriting from the BBC Radio 2 Awards, the Americana Music Association, and was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award.

A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s songs including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don Henley, Los Lobos, and many more. His massive body of work includes many GRAMMY® nominated albums as well as numerous soundtracks. His genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with engaging energy and onstage wit continue to earn him new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos and writers in Folk Rock history. In May of 2024, Thompson released the anticipated Ship To Shore, his first studio album in six years.

Zara Phillips is a singer/songwriter, actor, author, and activist. As an adoptee herself, much of her work is centered around the adoption world and is focused on improving understanding the lifelong impact of adoption. She is a mother of three and tours with her husband, musician Richard Thompson. She divides her time between London and New Jersey.

Event Details:

5:30 PM – Reception and Silent Auction

6:30 PM – Jazz Concert

The San Marcos High School Royal Band Boosters, a parent group supporting the music programs at San Marcos High School, proudly announces the upcoming Jazz Benefit Concert and Silent Auction. The concert will feature popular songs, classic standards, and a few surprise guests, preceded by a reception and silent auction. This event aims to raise $20,000 for the jazz band to compete in the 2026 World Strides Competition in New Orleans this April. The concert is geared toward San Marcos High School students, families and alumni, jazz music enthusiasts, and community members who believe in the value of music education in our public schools, as well as families with young musicians in the community.

The San Marcos High School Jazz Band has a history of excellent performances and competitions and regularly brings home top honors in competitions close to home and further afield. Most recently, they placed first at the 2025 Santa Barbara Jazz Festival and the Dos Pueblos Jazz Festival. In 2024 they placed first at the Dos Pueblos Jazz Festival and won multiple awards at the World Strides Competition in Chicago, Illinois.

“I’m excited for the students to have an opportunity to perform at such an amazing professional venue like the Lobero Theatre. The concert will show the community how great these kids can play! Our goal is to sell out the house to help raise money for the upcoming competition in New Orleans,” said Michael Kiyoi, the Instrumental Music Director at San Marcos High School.

Ticket sales are the best way to support the Jazz Band. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 PM for a reception and in-person silent auction out front of the theater, on the Lobero Esplanade. Auction items include two tickets for James Taylor at the Bowl, a VIP Experience at Santa Barbara Symphony, a staycation package, date nights, and a spring break activity basket, among other themed baskets. The public is welcome to participate in the silent auction without concert ticket purchase but must be present to win.

Students from the San Marcos music programs come from all socio-economic backgrounds. Fundraising helps the Band Boosters provide financial assistance to the program and ensures no student is turned away for lack of funds. This concert is generously sponsored by John C. Mithun Foundation Community Access Fund and Trystine Technical Innovations, Inc.
