ALO and Donavon Frankenreiter

by Josh James
April 30, 2024

ALO

ALO stands for Animal Liberation Orchestra – because music liberates the inner animal, of course. As liberated as they come, Zach Gill, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, and Steve Adams have certainly been at this a long time, having connected through their love of music while still pre-teens in Saratoga, California. Twenty-five years in, Gill (keyboards/vocals), Lebo (guitar/vocals), Adams (bass, vocals) and newest addition, Bay Area drum legend-in-training Ezra Lipp (drums, vocals), have recorded their greatest work to date. These guys have played with everybody. From royalty like Phil Lesh and members of the Grateful Dead, to So Cal surf-troubadour Jack Johnson.

ALO call their music “jam-pop,” and the description is apt – meticulously-crafted/accessibly-hooky compositions laced with improvisational departures, in which the band melds into a single organism in voice and consciousness. They’re always exploring, but never wandering. There is always intention, momentum, and a patience and confidence that can only be wrought from a quarter century of collaboration and water under the bridge. The band’s new full-length album Silver Saturdays is a celebration of that crooked path, of having lived through a turbulent phase of human history, and of the winding road still to come.

Donavon Frankenreiter

For nearly four decades Donavon Frankenreiter has been traveling the globe, first as a professional surfer and now as a musician. Born in Southern California, Donavon spent most of his youth chasing waves, turning pro at the age of 16. These days instead of surf competitions, it’s concert halls that bring the artist to town, where he entertains audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves, philosophical lyrics, and soulful delivery. This year, Frankenreiter is releasing his first studio album in 9 years, out September 20, 2024. The album, entitled Get Outta Your Mind, marks the 20-year anniversary of his self-titled debut album.

Livingston Taylor’s career as a professional musician has spanned over 50 years, encompassing performance, songwriting, and teaching. He maintains a performance schedule of more than a hundred shows a year, delighting audiences with his charm and vast repertoire of his 22 albums and popular classics. Livingston has written top-40 hits, recorded by his brother James Taylor, and has appeared with Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, and Jimmy Buffet. His songs have been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, his son Rufus Wainwright, and Mose Allison, among others. In 2022, Wainwright released Lifetime Achievement, an album of 15 original songs, that established his singular talent as our foremost six-string tragicomedian, not only undiminished, but hitting new heights. Additionally, he has co-written with songwriter/producer Joe Henry on the music for Judd Apatow’s hit movie Knocked Up, written music for the British theatrical adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen novel Lucky You, and composed topical songs for NPR’s Morning Edition and All Things Considered and ABC’s Nightline. SMHS Jazz Band

April 26, 2024

The San Marcos High School Jazz Band is composed of 26 students between grades 9 and 12. Many of them started playing their instruments or were first exposed to Jazz here at San Marcos! We have a rich history of making amazing music and this year is a special one for us. Having won the Dos Pueblos Jazz Festival, we took our ensemble to Chicago! This was the first time performing in Chicago and it went so well! We received a GOLD rating, took First Place, won the Spirit Award (only one group who best represents the values of the company wins), the Adjudicator Award (have to score about 92, only us and another group received it), the Ovation Award to Joshlin Santos (every school nominates a student and only one wins), Soloist Awards to Eliel Pozos and Lucas Carrara (only three total handed out), and to top it off a perfect 100 score from one judge (very very rare) with an average of over 97. We appreciate all your support and are still trying to raise funds to finish paying our expenses. If you want to donate more please contact Mr. Kiyoi via email, mkiyoi@sbunified.org. Thank you!

Musselwhite and Bishop

by Josh James
April 16, 2024

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Elvin Bishop and GRAMMY® Award-winning harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite are fellow blues travelers and living blues giants. The two history-making musicians – both Blues Hall of Famers – have over 100 years of professional musicianship between them. Their 2020 album, 100 Years of Blues on Alligator Records, is blues at its deepest, warmest and most engaging.

Although they’ve known each other since the early 60s, this was the first time they ever teamed up to make an album together. Their subtle, soulful musicianship and relaxed, conversational vocals fuel every song. Infused with their deep understanding of the blues tradition and the good-time spirit these two old pals stir up, 100 Years of Blues is one of the finest, most memorable recordings of either artist’s career.

Cat Power 2024

by Josh James
April 15, 2024

The artist, otherwise known as Chan Marshall, delivers a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. The original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock-and-roll. Marshall’s spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero’s imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.

Quotes:

“Cat Power makes Dylan’s legendary Albert Hall gig her own… A successful, rather touching interpretation of one of the most famous concerts in rock history.” – The Times (London) (4 stars)

“Brilliant.” – Vogue
