by Josh James
June 5, 2024

Aimee Mann is one of the most distinguished singer-songwriters of her generation. Her successful solo career has spanned several decades with two GRAMMY® Awards, several GRAMMY® nominations, and the release of nine critically acclaimed solo albums – including the profoundly popular soundtrack for the film Magnolia, which garnered an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination for Best Song in 2000.

Time magazine has said, “Mann has the same skill that great tunesmiths like McCartney and Neil Young have: the knack for writing simple, beautiful, instantly engaging songs,” while NPR voted her one of the “TOP 10 Best Living Songwriters” along with Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Her release “Mental Illness” won her a GRAMMY® for Best Folk Album in 2018.

Earlier in her musical life, Mann fronted the band ‘Til Tuesday, releasing three albums. She has also made numerous memorable cameo appearances in films such as The Big Lebowski and TV shows like Portlandia and The Daily Show. Her latest release, Queens of the Summer Hotel, continues to showcase her exceptional songwriting and musical talent.

Don Was has unveiled his new band, featuring an assemblage of jazz-leaning artists from his hometown – including longtime collaborator Dave McMurray and Luis Resto – as well as Vincent Chandler, John Douglas, Jeff Canady, Mahindi, Wayne Gerard, and Steffanie Christi’an. The band will perform a mix of new originals and interpretations of songs written by artists like Yusef Lateef, Olu Dara, Henry Threadgill, and more.

Since 2011, he has also served as President of America’s venerated jazz label, Blue Note Records. He fiercely protects the company’s eighty-five-year-old legacy, meticulously caretaking the revered catalog of Black American Music. This includes maintaining the availability and quality of vinyl reissues in the Tone Poet and Classic Jazz audiophile release series. Don also signs and produces many of the label’s recent roster of artists, including Robert Glasper, Charles Lloyd, Wayne Shorter, Dr Lonnie Smith, Gregory Porter and Jason Moran.

For his work as a record producer, he has won six GRAMMY® Awards – including Album of the Year in 1989 for Bonnie Raitt’s Nick of Time and Producer of the Year in 1994. Records that Don has produced have sold close to 100 million albums for a wide array of artists like The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Mayer, Ringo Starr, Wayne Shorter, The B52s and Charles Lloyd. In 1995, he produced and directed a documentary about the life of Brian Wilson, I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times, that won the San Francisco Film Festival’s Golden Gate Award. As a film composer, he won the 1994 British Academy Award (BAFTA) for Best Original Score in recognition of his work on the film Backbeat. He won the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction for his work on the CBS TV special The Beatles: The Night That Changed America. In 2018, Don was invited to join Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir to form the Wolf Brothers. They continue to consistently tour the US.

Don’s deep Detroit roots keep him anchored to the city where, where for the last 15 years he has music directed and played bass in the Don Was Detroit All Star Revue concerts, which are part of Detroit’s annual diversity festival, The Concert of Colors. From 2009-2012, Don hosted a weekly Sirius XM radio show on the Outlaw Country channel called The Motor City Hayride. Since 2021, he co-hosts a weekly, live radio show on Detroit’s NPR station, WDET-FM, called The Don Was Motor City Playlist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Cross has sold over 10 million albums, garnered five GRAMMY® Awards, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination, and five Top 10 singles. He and his band will be performing the carefully-crafted songs and music his fans enjoy, starting with “Sailing” and “Ride Like the Wind” from his GRAMMY® winning debut album, and continuing through the decades of his ever-changing but always excellent material.

Within a year of his self-titled debut album in 1980, Cross joined music royalty Burt Bacharach to write “Arthur’s Theme,” for the movie Arthur, which won an Academy Award for Best Song. With his 1983 release, Another Page, Cross was again in the Top 10 with the singles “All Right” and “Think of Laura.” His song, “Swept Away,” composed for the hit television series, Growing Pains, was nominated for an Emmy.

Cross started his own label and, since 2007, has released 8 albums of new material, including A Christopher Cross Christmas and The Café Carlyle Sessions, jazz treatments of hits and favorites born out of a residency at the famous Hotel Carlyle in New York City. Eric Idle

by Gina Graham
May 23, 2024

Eric Idle, star of stage, screen and crossword puzzle, has often been compared to Noel Coward. But, alas, never favorably. He has been in Show Business since 1961. “Unfortunately I can’t find the exit” he says. “My role in life seems to be cheering people up,” he adds glumly.

His new show, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, Live! is a nostalgic one man musical and contains everything including Comedy, Music, Philosophy and one fart joke.

His last tour of the West Coast was way back in 2016.

He has written several novels and plays and he was in several movies but he forgets which. Oh, and he was in Monty Python.

by Gina Graham
May 13, 2024

How do art & movement help us to heal? Seen through the lens of aerial, circus, and dance arts. Join our artists as they navigate our bodies’ natural survival responses; fight, flight, freeze and fawn.

In the summertime, we dance through lush fields. But in the dry fall heat, a wildfire engulfs the vibrant landscape, leaving behind scorched earth in its’ wake. In the harsh grip of winter, we roam through the fields of withering wildflowers, each flower representing our bodies’ natural responses to this communal trauma.

But why do these emotions seem so negative? Have they come as guides to teach us something about ourselves? Can we find physically based techniques to embrace our emotions, & blossom into spring? Will these new guides help us find new growth?

*Special Guest Announcement!*
