Fifty Years in Sixty Minutes: An Evening with the Bob Dylan Center
Film Screening and Conversation with Director Steven Jenkins and Special Guest Jeff Bridges

Spanning decades and musical styles, this far-ranging one-hour program of short films and videos from the Bob Dylan Archive features rare and previously unreleased clips of Dylan on stage and in the studio. Selections include Dylan’s first film soundtrack for 1961’s “Autopsy on Operation Abolition;” a devastating solo rendition of “Ballad of Hollis Brown” from the 1963 TV special “Folk Songs and More Folk Songs;” a rollicking 1976 take on “I Pity the Poor Immigrant” with Joan Baez; a gospel-infused “Blowin’ in the Wind;” an apocalyptically rocking “When the Night Comes Falling from the Sky” with Dylan backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; loving tributes to Johnny Cash and Tony Bennett; a glimpse into the Archive’s film restoration project with never-before-seen footage of “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” from 1966; and many more treasures from the Archive.

Bob Dylan Center Director Steven Jenkins will present the films and engage in a post-screening discussion and audience Q&A with beloved actor, performer and photographer Jeff Bridges, who worked with Dylan on the 2003 Larry Charles film Masked and Anonymous.

The mission of the Bob Dylan Center is to inspire and celebrate fearless creativity by exploring the music and artistry of the Nobel Prize-winning singer-songwriter as a catalyst for personal expression and cultural change.

With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five GRAMMY® Awards (with 18 nominations), two CMA Awards, two ACM Awards and is one of only 15 female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Most recently, Carpenter unveiled her new podcast, Hope is a Muscle, which finds her in conversation with people from all walks of life. During its run, the podcast was in the top five music podcasts on both Apple and Spotify Platforms. In early 2025 the album Looking For The Thread, a collaborative recording with Scottish singer-songwriters Karine Polwart and Julie Fowlis, was released worldwide. Of the album, The Arts Desk wrote, “It’s only January but this is an album of the year.”

Her 2025 tour will feature songs from Mary Chapin’s entire catalog and her new album set for early summer release.

Save Santa Barbara Steelhead – SB Flyfishers

by Gina Graham
February 5, 2025

FREE Town Hall Gathering to support the “Save Santa Barbara Steelhead” Campaign

For thousands of years, steelhead used our region’s rivers and streams for spawning and rearing of young fish and then migrated to the ocean to grow and mature. Since the 1950’s we have lost 99% of these fish due to dams, over-fishing and barriers to migration.

Steelhead are our most unique fish. They are anadromous, meaning they are born in freshwater where they spend up to 3 years, then swim to the ocean. The ocean is where they grow into large adults (10-20 lbs.) and, when sexually ready, they return to their streams of origin to reproduce (spawn). They need all three elements we humans love about the Santa Barbara area – the ocean, the fresh water streams, and the mountains.

The construction of dams, roads & barriers in the 1900s has dramatically reduced access to their natal streams and high altitudes with suitable conditions for survival. Today, Southern Steelhead are nearing extinction and declared endangered under the state and federal Endangered Species Acts.

An esteemed panel will speak about the history of steelhead in our region, what has gone wrong that has put them on the Endangered Species list, and what we must do today to save them from extinction. Panel speakers will come from the Santa Ynez band of Chumash Indians, CA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, Enviro Defense Center, The Cachuma Project, Cal Trout, Koehler Winery, and Santa Barbara ChannelKeeper.

The Grace Fisher Foundation will be present on the Lobero Esplanade from 11am – 4pm featuring art for sale from Grace, and an interactive community art project celebrating the conservation of the endangered Southern California Steelhead.

Attend to find out how you can help Santa Barbara Fly Fishers save Santa Barbara Steelhead! We need you!!

The White Buffalo

by Gina Graham
January 14, 2025

Jake Smith – singer, songwriter, guitarist and sole charter member of The White Buffalo – has built a powerful body of work that marks him as a genuine original. The California-bred artist writes timeless, vividly detailed character studies, tapping into the emotional lives of various misfits, outsiders, and troubled souls with insight and compassion. His songwriting is matched by his rough-hewn, deeply expressive voice, and by his distinctive instrumental arrangements, which are simultaneously intimate and epic. Smith’s songs, and The White Buffalo’s recordings, have struck a responsive chord with a large and diverse fan base, and won praise from critics across the media spectrum.

NPR’s All Songs Considered hailed Smith as an “amazing storyteller.”

With their fusion of bluegrass instrumentation and folk-rock amplification, Rose’s Pawn Shop have spent the better part of two decades carving out an Americana sound that’s as diverse as the band’s native Los Angeles. Their past releases offer a melting pot of modern-day roots music, shot through with electric guitar, fiddle, raw percussive stomp, and stacked vocal harmonies. Anchored by the sharp songwriting of frontman Paul Givant, it’s a sound for campfires and car stereos, for front porches and dive bars, for the heart as well as the heartland.

Derek Douget 2025

by Josh James
January 13, 2025

Accomplished saxophonist Derek Douget, who’s served as Music Director of the Brubeck Circle Residency since 2018, returns to the Lobero stage for an electrifying performance not to be missed. The artist, who finely mixes his Louisiana upbringing with his strong individualism and idiosyncratic voice, has worked with countless A-list jazz musicians throughout his career, such as Ellis Marsalis, Nicolas Payton, Dr. John, Terence Blanchard, Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, and more.

Douget’s stellar band of world-renowned jazz musicians includes GRAMMY® Award-winner Victor “Red” Atkins, Trumpet Mafia leader Ashlin Parker (GRAMMY® Award-winner with New Orleans Jazz Orchestra), Jason Stewart (Ellis Marsalis Trio, Quartet, and Quintet), and GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Adonis Rose (Artistic Director of New Orleans Jazz Orchestra).

As one of Downbeat magazine’s Top Jazz Venues for more than a decade, the Lobero sits in a unique position to support future generations of jazz musicians. The Brubeck Jazz Residency Program consists of twelve hands-on workshops with more than 350 students in just five days. There will also be a student “jam session” open to all jazz music students from schools county-wide, followed by a public performance on the Lobero stage, for which all students are offered complimentary tickets. The true benefit of visiting the same schools with the same artists year-after-year is that we are building relationships and can follow the progress of the most engaged students.

Words About GOOD DOG by Bill

It seems like some of the best ideas come to me late into the night.
Tossing and turning …unable to sleep …or dreaming.
My history with Tony Scherr, Kenny Wollesen, and Greg Leisz goes way way back….with each of them separately and as a group.
We’ve traveled many miles.
My closest musical brothers.
Like a real band.
But…it’s been quite a while since the four of us have all been together.
Recently I was having one of those restless nights and it came to me.
We must get back together!
It’s been way too long.
There’s more music for us to play.
We’re just getting started.
