Marc Cohn

by Genevieve Rhiger
February 12, 2018

After winning a GRAMMY for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis,” Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer/songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller, balancing the exuberant with the poignant, and able to distill universal truth out of his often romantic, drawn-from-life tales.

Cohn followed up his platinum-selling debut with two more releases in the 1990s, at which point TIME magazine called him “one of the honest, emotional voices we need in this decade” and Bonnie Raitt declared, “Marc is one of the most soulful, talented artists I know. I love his songs, he’s an incredible singer, and I marvel at his ability to mesmerize every audience he plays for.”

Raitt, James Taylor, David Crosby, Graham Nash and Patty Griffin all made guest appearances on Cohn’s early records for Atlanta, as his reputation as an artist and performer continued to grow. In 1998, Cohn took a decade-long sabbatical from recording, ending in 2007 with Join the Parade. Inspired by the horrific events following Hurricane Katrina and his own near fatal shooting just weeks before, Parade is his most moving and critically acclaimed record to date.

About his album Listening Booth: 1970, a collection of reimagined classics from that seminal year in music, Rolling Stone said, “Cohn has one of rock’s most soulful croons – a rich immediately recognizable tenor that makes these songs his own.” In late 2014, Cohn released, “The Coldest Corner in the World,” the title song to the documentary Tree Man and his first original song released in more than seven years.

On March 25, 2016, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of his platinum-selling debut album, Marc proudly released Careful What you Dream: Lost Songs and Rarities and the bonus album, Evolution of a Record, featuring never-before-heard songs and demos dating back to years before his debut album and the Grammy Award that followed.

Lukas Nelson

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 31, 2018

Since forming 10 years ago, the buzz surrounding Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real has been quietly intensifying.  During that time, the 28-year old singer/songwriter/guitarist and his bandmates have played hundreds of shows and major festivals all over the world and built a devoted underground following.  Lukas’ profile continued to rise when he contributed three songs and heavenly vocals to his dad Willie Nelson’s 2012 album, Heroes, their voices blending with potent DNA. Then two years later, life took another turn skyward when Neil Young decided to make Promise of the Real his touring and studio band. Young has guided the grateful young musicians ever since as they’ve backed the legend on tour around the world and on his two most recent albums.

Like many great Southern storytellers, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers has fallen in love with a place. The people, landmarks and legendary moments from his childhood home of Lawrence County, Kentucky, populate the 10 songs in his formidable debut, Purgatory, an album that’s simultaneously modern and as ancient as the Appalachian Mountains in which events unfold. The album, co-produced by Grammy Award winners Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, is a semi-autobiographical sketch of Childers’ growth from wayward youth to happily married man, told in the tradition of a Southern gothic novel with a classic noir antihero who may just be irredeemable. Purgatory is a chiaroscuro painting with darkness framing light in high relief. There’s catharsis and redemption. Sin and temptation. Murder and deceit. Demons and angels. Moonshine and cocaine. So much moonshine and cocaine. All played out on the large, colorful canvas of Eastern Kentucky.

Go To Hale 420

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 30, 2018

Rock ‘n roll fan and music lover Hale Milgrim is back with the high-ly anticipated return of Quips & Clips! Hale (aka, the Trip Master) has mined his personal archives for rare concert footage and insider stories that celebrate 420, and–thanks to a little help from his friends–will lead a magical mystery tour of legendary artists from the 60’s to the present and share rarely heard rock ’n roll stories. While we cannot reveal who will be the subject of many of the clips you may (or may not) have seen before, don’t worry–you’re in for something completely different.

Milgrim’s musical journey started behind the counter at Isla Vista’s Discount Records and has spiraled upward through a succession of positions at major record labels, leading eventually to a stint as the President/CEO of Capitol Records. Since returning to Santa Barbara with his wife Anne, he has continued to work and support local music (including Sings Like Hell), and hosted a Sunday radio show, “Go to Hale,” which aired for over six years on KTYD.

Audiences can look forward to memorable insights, commentary and illumination from Hale–well, at least everything he remembers. Allow us to be blunt; this show is going to be a hit.

The presentation will begin at 6:57 PM sharp, and doors open at 6:27 PM. Seating is general admission, so be sure to get here beginning at 6:03 PM on the Esplanade for pre-show refreshments and memorabilia sale, and fun stuff from Lobero LIVE and KTYD.

Proceeds from these sales benefit live music at the Lobero Theatre.

Jay Farrar (Son Volt)

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 29, 2018

As a founder of alternative country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, a solo artist, and as the leader of Son Volt, Jay Farrar’s work often seeks out the ghosts of America’s discordant or forgotten past, converses at length with them, and writes songs that stake a claim to a better future.  Most recently, Farrar has added the Son Volt album, Notes of Blue, to his long list of critically acclaimed albums.

From his earliest recordings in the 1990s as a founding member of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar has been a keen observer of the American landscape: its beauties and its tragedies, salvations and poisons.

It’s a perspective that’s been hard-won by steady touring and travel through this nation, and Farrar’s two-decades as the leader of Son Volt (as well as impressive turns as an acclaimed solo artist and collaborator) have only deepened and sharpened his gift for capturing the sights and sounds of his American journey.

Johnny Irion

Best known for his folk explorations with his wife Sarah Lee Guthrie, including their recent Wassaic Way produced by Jeff Tweedy, and his latest rock venture with US ELEVATOR, which Will Hermes of Rolling Stone Magazine praised for its “songs that are hand crafted as lovingly as the jeans on the back of After the Goldrush,” Irion has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting artists across the folk-rock spectrum, from his uncannily Young-Nilsson-esque voice to his melodic and lyrical mettle.

Derek Douget

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 22, 2018

Derek Douget, a member of the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and the Director of the Heritage School of Music, finely mixes his Louisiana upbringing with his strong individualism and idiosyncratic voice. Playing the alto and soprano saxophones, Douget has performed with many notable musicians on the New Orleans scene, including the inaugural Louis Armstrong Quintet–a performing group of graduate students dedicated to teaching jazz in New Orleans area schools. Derek Douget has performed or worked with a veritable who’s who in the world of jazz, including Nicholas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Dr. John, Terence Blanchard, Allen Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Randy Brecker, Wyclef Jean, Jason Marsalis,  Kermit Ruffins, Stefon Harris and many other excellent musicians.

On February 20-23, 2018 Derek will be in Santa Barbara to work with students from local high schools, colleges and non-profit organizations as he and his band spend quality time providing in-classroom instruction, working on charts with kids at Notes for Notes at the local Boys & Girls Clubs before capping off the week with a live performance with his quintet and friends. This collaboration is designed to inspire young jazz players, to celebrate Black History Month, and to help create the jazz audiences of the future.

Special thanks go out to the Bentson Kauth Family for supporting this unique residency. We also appreciate the support of the Santa Barbara Bowl and the many members of our Brubeck Society. Supporting music and other arts education is an important part of the Lobero’s mission, but we could not do it without the partnership of friends and funders who share our vision.
