Camerata Pacifica

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 10, 2018

Due to flooding and road closures in Montecito, Camerata Pacifica’s concert originally scheduled for 7.30 p.m. Friday evening, January 12th, at the Music Academy of the West has relocated to the Lobero Theatre.

Together Camerata Pacifica and the Lobero Theatre will offer this as a community concert. Camerata Pacifica’s ticket holders will be transferred and reseated at the Lobero. The remaining tickets will be offered on a pay-as-you-wish basis, with all proceeds to benefit the United Way Thomas Fire and Flood Fund to support victims in Santa Barbara County following the dreadful events of recent days.

“Camerata Pacifica’s role in our community is to present music,” said Camerata Pacifica Artistic Director Adrian Spence, “and during this time of great challenge that is the best thing for us to do. For those who would like to join us we will play. This music speaks to each of us individually, and from it we each draw our own comfort.”

David Asbell, Lobero Theatre Executive Director echoes these sentiments. “The Lobero Theatre has always been a home to the community in times of need, and we’re proud to partner with Camerata Pacifica for a quality evening that reminds us of the healing power of the arts.”

Capitol Steps 2018

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 9, 2018

No one in the headlines is safe from the side-splitting satire of the Capitol Steps, the only group in Washington attempting to be funnier than Congress. This troupe of former Congressional staffers travels the country satirizing the very people and places that once employed them.

No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy?!

  • “They’re the best. There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” — Larry King, CNN
  • “[Capitol Steps] brings chuckles…rave reviews…guffaws…and bipartisan grins all around.” —Wall Street Journal
  • “An oasis of good-natured ribbing in a fiercely partisan world” – Washington Post

SLH42 – Steve Poltz

by Genevieve Rhiger
December 19, 2017

Steve Poltz’ solo body of work is an impressive collection of ballads, rockers and uniquely melodic acoustic numbers that reflect his incomparable style of alternate tunings and savage finger picking techniques. Guitar geeks fall prostrate at his feet trying vainly to learn how to play his stunningly gorgeous and deceptively complex songs. To see him play guitar is a visual feast so frenetic that close proximity to his playing exposes one to risk of seizure.

His albums reflect the depth and expanse of his influences throughout the years (One Left Shoe, Chinese Vacation, Traveling and Unraveling). He has also released a children’s album (The Barn), a performance DVD (Tales From The Tavern) and a collection of other recordings that defy categorization, such as Answering Machine – a 56-track collection of 45 second “songs” culled from his answering machine’s outgoing messages. Neil Young has ranked it as a favorite album.

Steve Poltz’s latest recording project brought him back to Halifax, where he collaborated with Joel Plaskett, an award-winning Canadian songwriter, performer, producer and eminently kindred spirit. The two holed up in Joel’s Scotland Yard studio with a 2 inch,16 track analog tape machine, a 24 hour work ethic, their comfy clothes, and all the mojo they could conjure. The result was Dreamhouse,” Steve’s most accomplished and focused album to date. Critically acclaimed across the globe, it has been singled out by some critics as the 2010 Album of the Year.

His live shows have captivated audiences far and wide with a mix of singing, storytelling, shredding, and the occasional spoken word rants which have been known to incite riots. He can take an audience from laughter to tears and back again in the space of the same song. Steve Poltz transcends the word “talented.” He is unforgettable in all the right ways.

Tender Mercies

Tender Mercies (featuring members of Counting Crows) old school approach harkens back to records they loved – like Beggars Banquet, Big Pink and Hank Williams’ recordings.  Tender Mercies timeless original songs are sure to stick in your head!

SLH42 – Chris Smither

by Genevieve Rhiger
December 19, 2017

A profound songwriter, Chris Smither draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets, and philosophers. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting. Honing a synthesis of folk and blues for 50 years, Chris Smither is truly an American original. As Acoustic Guitar magazine wrote, Smither sings about “the big things – life, love, loss – in a penetrating and poetic yet unpretentious way.”

It is legend that a blistering Jackie Venson guitar solo knocked Pluto straight out of planetary existence. Venson’s “…astonishing mix of raw soul, superb musicianship and laid back grace…” (Austin American Statesman) has been compared to the likes of Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse and fellow Austin native Gary Clark, Jr. Originally a classical pianist, Jackie picked up the guitar, shortly after graduating from Berklee College of Music, and made the giant leap from the tradition of classical music to the raw and gritty blues.

SLH42 – Jackshit

by Genevieve Rhiger
December 19, 2017

From deep in heart of Cochtotan, CA, comes possibly the greatest rock band in the world. With two Hall of Famers and a guitar slinger of fearsome reputation, JackShit is poised to take on the known universe. Get ready, Santa Barbara: here comes Pete Thomas, Davey Faragher and Val McCallum… Jack Shit!

“Music is in Adam Traum‘s blood. His father, Happy Traum, was a Greenwich Village folk music icon, who recorded with Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan. The younger Traum is a chip off the old block, yet he definitely puts his own stamp on roots music. The vocalist-guitarist’s mix of folk, country, rockabilly and blues has made him one of the more intriguing entertainers on the Americana scene.” Jim Harrington, Oakland Tribune/San Jose Mercury News

Florestal: Then and Now
An Architecture, Garden and Family Chronicle

A talk by Marc Appleton at the historic Lobero Theatre

In 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Cooper Bryce built a Spanish Colonial Revival house designed by architect George Washington Smith on fifty-two acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Hope Ranch in Santa Barbara, California.  Known as “Florestal,” the late historian David Gebhard considered it “one of the great houses of the era and one of Smith’s finest masterpieces.”  The house and surrounding gardens, which were developed by Mrs. Bryce with input from the horticulturalist Peter Riedel, became the family home to their children and grandchildren and endured intact and unchanged until Mrs. Bryce’s death in 1980.  In his talk, Marc Appleton (one of the grandchildren) recounts Florestal’s story and describes the magical influence it had in its heyday, as well as what has recently happened with the property’s renovations.

About The Speaker
Marc Appleton is an award-winning architect.  His design work has been widely published in Architectural DigestTown and Country, and other periodicals. He has consistently been named one of AD’s top 100 Designers. In 1999, he wrote a new introduction and bibliography for Acanthus Press’ reprint of Rexford Newcomb’s Mediterranean Domestic Architecture in the United States, Followed by this publication of George Washington Smith: An Architect’s Scrapbook, and is currently working on several forthcoming books.

Mr. Appleton is a founding member of the Appleton-Whittel Research Ranch Foundation in Arizona and the Mingei International Museum of World Folks Art in San Diego. He has served on the Board of Trustees for Prescott College in Arizona, and currently serves on a a number of committees and boards, including as a Museum Trustee, the Board of Trustees for Cooper Union, New York, The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, and the Dean’s Council of the Yale School of Architecture.

Chris Hillman

by Genevieve Rhiger
December 7, 2017

Chris Hillman, a founding member of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, and the Desert Rose Band has released Bidin’ My Time, his first studio album in more than a decade. The album, which was produced by Tom Petty, has been warmly received by critics who praise the “sharp and ruminative collection of new and old tunes by a musician whose influence far outstrips his fame.” (Stephen Deusner, Stereogum)

Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times observes, “Bidin’ My Time contains nods to virtually every phase of Hillman’s musical life, with acoustic bluegrass, jangly folk-rock and sweet country-rock that lend a full-circle quality to the project,” while the Associated Press‘ Scott Stroud notes, “Hillman still sounds like a man in his 20s, though he is 72, and the stellar playing behind him gives the album the feel of one last Byrds record.”

Bob Mehr’s profile of Hillman appears in the new issue of Mojo. He writes, “Bidin’ My Time reunites Hillman with Byrds mates Crosby and Roger McGuinn, plus various Heartbreakers. Yet, despite the guest list, it’s mostly a spare, stripped-down affair, a perfect distillation of Hillman’s sharp craft and quiet brilliance.”

No Depression’s Henry Carrigan asserts “Bidin’ My Time shimmers with beauty, resounds with haunting melodies, and sparkles like a diamond, shining light from every musical facet of [Hillman’s] long career,” and Glide Magazine‘s Doug Collette calls it “a virtual tour-de-force.”

Writing in AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine says “It’s a cozy sound, one that feels as intimate as a front porch but is delivered with the precision of seasoned pros,” and concludes that the album feels “like an understated summation of everything Hillman’s accomplished in his long, varied career.”

Hillman is touring in support of his new record with longtime musical partner Herb Pedersen, who acted as the album’s executive producer.  The duo is joined by multi-instrumentalist John Jorgenson, a Desert Rose Band alum whom they frequently work with and stand up bass player Mark Fain who also plays on the new record.

A message from Chris Hillman: Chris & The Santa Barbara Music Foundation have had this concert in the works for several weeks. In light of the recent devastation of the Thomas Fire in Ventura, which the Hillman’s have called home for many years, Chris will donate all proceeds to  victims of the fire via Direct Relief and Help California.
We appreciate your support.

Brian Culbertson

by Genevieve Rhiger
December 5, 2017

Brian Culbertson is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer known for his distinct brand of genre-crossing contemporary jazz, R&B and funk. Mining the urban sounds of musically-rich Chicago, he began his musical studies on piano at age eight and quickly picked up several other instruments by the time he was twelve, including drums, trombone, bass and euphonium. Inspired by the iconic R&B-jazz-pop artists of the 1970s like Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Chicago, David Sanborn and others, Culbertson started composing original music for his seventh grade piano recital and hasn’t stopped since, amassing 30 Billboard No. 1 singles (and counting!) and a deep catalogue of 18 albums, most of which have topped the Billboard contemporary jazz charts.

With love, romance and his recent twentieth wedding anniversary serving as his inspiration, Culbertson crafted thirteen new songs that will be released as “Colors of Love” on Valentine’s Day. The seduction begins with the first single, the amorous title track, which is a sensual R&B groove illuminated by lyrical acoustic piano melodies typical of the collection’s contents. A nearly three-month-long U.S. concert tour will bring “Colors of Love” to life in a vivid theatrical production, incorporating video elements in a major way.
