Santa Barbara Youth Symphony May 13

by Gina Graham
November 2, 2017

The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony now serves the region by providing musical enrichment to young people through the avenues of orchestral performance and instruction in our community’s schools. There are three components to the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony Programs: the String Workshop, Junior Orchestra, and Youth Symphony.

The Santa Barbara Youth Symphony is an orchestra of 65-70 young musicians from Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. These students, ages 12-18 from our regional schools, are challenged with serious pieces from the standard orchestral repertoire. Each Youth Symphony member is chosen by audition and no student is refused entry because of finances. Students rehearse weekly on Sunday evenings during the school year.

Three major concerts are given yearly. Each one features a Youth Symphony member, who by audition, performs as a concerto soloist. In addition, the Youth Symphony also gives a free Children’s Concert.

Most importantly, the Youth Symphony, through its performances and rehearsals, gives these young people a sense of accomplishment through steady musical and team effort. They learn that others rely on them to be at rehearsals, know their music, and to support one another. The Youth Symphony orchestra is a microcosm of real life, and as such, it prepares these young people well for their future roles in society.

Lewis Black

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 23, 2017

Due to the mudslides and road closures in Santa Barbara, Lewis Black: The Joke’s On US show originally scheduled for Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Lobero Theatre has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 25, 2018.

Any tickets already purchased will be honored on the new date.

Refunds for the performance can be made at the original point of purchase.

LEWIS BLACK, GRAMMY Award-winning, stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian, actor, and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs more than 200 nights annually, to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently, a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

LEWIS BLACK came into national prominence with his appearances on THE DAILY SHOW in 1996. Those appearances on THE DAILY SHOW led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime, and Epix. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album Stark Raving Black and has published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010).

Tim Minchin 2017

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 10, 2017

Tim Minchin is an Australian, musician, actor, comedian and writer who has been performing his unique brand of musical comedy in front of appropriately excitable and ever growing audiences since 2005. Without wanting to go on and on about it, he’s done some pretty successful live shows since then, often in Australia or the UK, but also on the North American continent (yes that includes you too Canada). His current songs span topics such as environmentalism, rationalism, prejudice(ism) and his amour de boobs(ism). During his shows he plays the piano, always nicely and oftentimes wildly and excitingly, whilst looking wonderfully athletic, in a pair of delightfully uncomfortable skinny jeans.

“Minchin is a bright, fearless performer with an outstanding audience rapport and vivid point-of-view.” – Time Out Chicago

“One of the most talented, creative and entertaining performers out there.”– Brooklyn Vegan

The White Buffalo

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 3, 2017

Over the course of five albums, various EPs, and numerous prominent placements in such high-profile outlets as TV’s Sons of Anarchy and Californication, Jake Smith– singer, songwriter, guitarist and sole charter member of the White Buffalo–has built a powerful body of work that marks him as a genuine original.

The California-bred artist writes timeless, vividly detailed character studies, tapping into the emotional lives of various misfits, outsiders and troubled souls with insight and compassion.  His songwriting is matched by his rough-hewn, deeply expressive voice, and by his distinctive instrumental arrangements, which are simultaneously intimate and epic.

The Bryan Titus Trio sings and plays some rootsy, gutsy American music. Rock ‘n Roll, Gospel, Country, Blues & Bluegrass … all stewing in the same pot. This is a hard-working local band that puts it down in the studio and backs it up on the stage.

An Evening with David Rawlings

by Gina Graham
September 22, 2017

Acclaimed songwriter and guitarist David Rawlings released his freshly pressed third album, Poor David’s Almanack, on August 11 via Acony Records. For Poor David’s Almanack, Rawlings leaves the Dave Rawlings Machine moniker behind and serves up a wry mixture of acoustic and electric music rich in ageless American vernacular. The album of ten new songs was crafted by studio wizards Ken Scott (Beatles, David Bowie) and Matt Andrews on analog tape during a week of sessions at legendary Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Rawlings and longtime compatriot Gillian Welch joined together with Willie Watson, Paul Kowert, Brittany Haas, Ketch Secor, and Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes to produce an album for all seasons.

Dave will have a full band including longtime compatriot Gillian Welch, Paul Kowert (of The Punch Brothers), Willie Watson and Brittany Haas.

Lighting Up Santa Barbara!

by Genevieve Rhiger
September 6, 2017

On October 5, the Historic Theatre District ( The Granada Theatre, The Lobero Theatre, and the Ensemble Theatre Company at the New Vic)  will kick off a new season of live performances with a large-scale art installation illuminating the performing arts, and shining a light on Santa Barbara’s collaborative spirit.

Curated by local projection artists, The Environment Makers, this free event will light up the outdoor walls of the three theaters with a specially designed, coordinated installation of projected moving images, and feature interactive elements for pedestrians.

You’re invited to enjoy all the Historic Theatre District has to offer while experiencing an art installation the likes of which downtown Santa Barbara has never seen before!

The light show will begin at dark (around 7 pm) and continue for about 90 minutes during which traffic–pedestrians and those in cars–can enjoy animated images related to the performing arts. These large-scale art installations are designed to invite passers-by to visit the theaters and learn more about the 2017-18 performance season.

WARNING! No extreme nudity, just extreme hilarity.

A fictitious male stripper troupe (played by a cast of some of Canada’s best improvisational comedians) performs a sexylarious improv comedy show. These guys try to be sexy… it just comes out funny. Constantly grooving and gyrating in between scenes they banter with the crowd and perform their hilarious twist on improv sketches. They sing, they “dance”. These guys are oiled up and ready to make you laugh at them.

Semi undressed and completely unscripted, The Comic Strippers take off their shirts and take on your suggestions to create a whole new genre of comedy.
