Danceworks 2018

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 15, 2018

To celebrate DANCEworks landmark tenth Anniversary Season, we’ve invited DANCEworks talented cast of choreographers back to the Lobero to perform after the world premiere from Doug Elkins Choreography, etc. You won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime event with such important names in the world of contemporary dance who have all left their mark on our city.

Performing first is the inventive Doug Elkins choreography, etc.–who has been hailed by The New York Times as, “one of the most musical, witty and inventive choreographers of his generation.”

Nine new and important works of modern dance have been created on the boards of the Lobero stage and gone on to tour extensively–nationally and abroad–significantly impacting the careers of the notable choreographers at the helm. DANCEworks’ focus has always been on pushing the art form and contributing to the larger world of contemporary dance, and the critics agree that the sustained time and space awarded to these choreographers has been nothing short of life-altering.

[loberoquote color=”darkgray” align=”right”] “There’s something WILD happening in Santa Barbara you gotta get your tickets now. Not only is Doug Elkins premiering a new dance but all the former DANCEworls choreographers will be performing or presenting solos.

Where else can you see Mark Dendy, Brian Brooks, Kate Weare, VIM VIGOR, Larry Keigwin, Doug Varone, Aszure Barton, and Adam Barruch, all in one night on the same stage?

WHY? They are celebrating 10 years of kick-ass dance! ” – Larry Keigwin, Choreographer & Artistic Director, KEIGWIN + COMPANY

Marc Broussard

by Genevieve Rhiger
April 26, 2018

Marc Broussard is an artist with a unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock and soul into contemporary terms. This gift has been a matter of common knowledge since 2002, when Broussard released his debut album, Momentary Setback, which he recorded and released independently at age 20. It was no secret before then, going back to those lucky witnesses who heard him belt “Johnny B. Goode” onstage at age 5 while sitting in with his father’s band.  Throughout his life, Broussard has been tapped as a talent to watch.

Broussard recently premiered his new music video “Memory of You.” The heartfelt song with a powerful chorus, “Memory of You” is the latest single from his current release Easy to Love.

The Dales are a five-piece Americana roots-rock band, carried by three-part harmonies and a deep appreciation for classic songwriting and early country music.

Joining Broussard for this show is the Americana/Roots band The Dales whose poignant debut, Marie, highlights their incredible harmonies and incisive songwriting. The album stands as a tribute to the bass player’s girlfriend who passed away from breast cancer in 2015. They are supporters of Stand Up to Cancer organization and have been featured on NPR , Parade, Paste and more. Check out their new video for the song “Sleepwakin”

Hats Off 2018

by Genevieve Rhiger
March 22, 2018

Hats Off is the Lobero Theatre Associates’ signature fundraising event that raises needed funds for the Lobero Theatre while honoring a significant presence in the arts.  This year the Associates tip their hat to one of the most successful and celebrated songwriters of the modern era, Jeff Barry.

It is said that at any given time, somewhere in the world, someone is playing or singing a Jeff Barry song. While you may not know Jeff Barry by name, there’s no doubt you’re familiar with his extensive body of work.

Jeff Barry is the musical mind behind chart-topping hits including: “Tell Laura I Love Her,” “Chapel of Love,” “Be My Baby,” “Doo Wah Ditty,” “River Deep, Mountain High,” “Sugar Sugar,” “And Then He Kissed Me,” “Da Do Run Run,” and “The Leader Of The Pack,” among many others. His songs have been recorded by an endless list of artists, such as Celine Dion, U2, Percy Sledge, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, The Beach Boys, Glenn Campbell, Mariah Carey, Sam Cook and Johnny Mathis.

Mr. Barry was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed him to be #19 in their “Top 100 Songwriters of All Time” list, and #3 of non-artist writers.

Proceeds from this enlightening luncheon will support general operating funds for the Lobero Theatre and new, energy-efficient lighting systems.

To make a gift or inquire about sponsorship opportunities, please reach out to Sheila Caldwell at scaldwell@lobero.org or at 805.679.6013.

Special Thanks to this year’s Hats Off co-chairs, Joan Crossland and Janet McCann.

Once a self-proclaimed retired artist, Damien Escobar, is now back to being one of the world’s top violinist. He is hitting the road to promote his second solo album, Boundless, his first solo album of all originally produced material. Four years ago Damien was a shell of himself. Humbled by homelessness and depression, Damien had to fight through his fear of failure and reemerge as a confident, positive, thriving artist. An unprecedented story of triumph, Damien Escobar can look back at his days playing the violin for change on the subway platforms of New York to playing for Presidents in the White House.
