American Crossroads Trio

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 8, 2018

It may seem lofty to use the motto of the United States to describe a musical group, but “out of many, one” accurately describes the trio of David Bromberg, Larry Campbell and David Hidalgo. Each of these acclaimed performers is steeped in American music traditions, from wildly divergent paths.

David Bromberg haunted the streets of Greenwich Village in the 1960’s, learning the blues first hand from Rev. Gary Davis and Mississippi John Hurt on his way to becoming an in-demand session musician and accompanist for Jerry Jeff Walker, Bob Dylan, Phoebe Snow, Willie Nelson and dozens more. Further musical explorations with Doc Watson and others lead to a deep dive into American bluegrass and country music. David’s unannounced performance before 400,000 at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 launched a legendary career as a recording artist and bandleader in his own right.

David Hidalgo is perhaps best known as the guitarist and singer of the Grammy-winning band Los Lobos, the East LA based group he co-founded with Louie Perez. ‘Lobos’ has prospered over a storied forty-five year career, introducing audiences around the world to its unique Chicano-flavored American rock and roll, blues and roots music. Adept at a dizzying arsenal of instruments, Hidalgo is a masterful musician and singer who has contributed to recordings by Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits and others. His unrivaled musicality and vision enables him to adapt to virtually any setting.

Larry Campbell, like Bromberg and Hidalgo, has lent his considerable talents to the aforementioned Mr. Dylan – Larry was by Bob’s side for eight years as a part of the ‘Never-Ending Tour’ band. Painstakingly teaching himself multiple instruments as a teen, Larry criss-crossed the US soaking up music in Austin, TX, Jackson, MS and Los Angeles. Studio recordings and tours with Keith Richards, kd lang, Jackson Browne, Emmylou Harris and others have cemented Larry’s reputation as a world class musician. A master guitarist, Larry is also accomplished on mandolin, lap steel, fiddle, pedal-steel guitar, cittern and banjo. Campbell is a three-time Grammy winner for his productions of Levon Helm. He currently records and tours with Teresa Williams.

Nashville-based guitarist Jordan Tice is quickly becoming regarded as one of the most exciting young artists on the American roots music scene. He has worked as a sideman to legendary performers like guitarist Dave Rawlings, banjo player Tony Trischka, and comedian Steve Martin, as well as released four solo albums of original music to critical acclaim. His latest release, “Horse County”, features his singing and songwriting in addition to his established instrumental-writing and guitar-picking skills with a sound that calls to mind the music of Roger Miller, John Hartford, and Norman Blake. In addition to his solo work and work as a sideman he is also a part of the instrumental supergroup, Hawktail, which features members of Punch Brothers and Crooked Still. He has toured the US, Europe, and Australia and has been featured on Live from Here (formerly Prairie Home Companion) as well as at festivals like the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Grey Fox Bluegrass festival and the Strawberry Music Festival.

September 24, 2018

My My, Hey Hey—the Doublewide Kings have some big news today:

On Saturday, November 17th, local groove-masters the Doublewide Kings will miraculously transform into a group of powder-fingered Mr. Souls to present a one-night-only concert performance of “The Doublewide Kings Play Neil Young.” That’s right, for one magical SB evening you’ll be able to witness that rare combination of talents that we like to call DWKY.

Did you catch Mr. Young’s phenomenal pop-up shows at the Lobero earlier this summer but find you crave some more Live Rust? Do you feel helpless for having missed ‘em? Well, either way, your pals the Kings will have you, and Mr. Young, splendidly covered with a night of great music that will range—in authentic Neil fashion—from the acoustic, bittersweet goodbyes of “Sugar Mountain” to the gritty, electric crunch of “Cinnamon Girl.” This will be a full, concert-length show so you’ll be sure to hear some favorites—and some surprises as well.

Please come out November 17 to support the Doublewide Kings, the Lobero, Santa Barbara, Good Ol’ Neil, and the ragged glory of live music. Buy your tickets today and together we can keep the free world rockin’.

Gregory Alan Isakov

by Genevieve Rhiger
September 11, 2018

Few artists maintain the lifestyle kept by Gregory Alan Isakov, a Colorado-based indie-folk artist and a full-time farmer who sells vegetable seeds and grows various market crops on his three-acre farm, while also tending to a thriving musical career.

Isakov had an easier time balancing his two passions while making his fourth full-length studio album, Evening Machines. In between farm duties, the multi-instrumentalist wrote and recorded in a studio housed in a barn on his property. Like the farm, this studio has a communal atmosphere, filled with instruments and gear stored there by musician friends—gear Isakov always leaves on, just in case inspiration strikes.

“Sometimes I couldn’t sleep, so I’d walk into the studio and work really hard into the night,” he says. “A lot of times I would find myself in the light of all these VU meters and the tape machine glow, so that’s where the title came from. I recorded mostly at night, when I wasn’t working in the gardens. It doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter, morning or afternoon, this music always feels like evening to me.”

As its name implies, the dark indie rock and folk populating Evening Machines possesses a dusky hue. Hushed acoustic guitar and sparse piano combine for a moody foundation amplified by ornate and heavy embellishments: distant electric guitars, keyboards, pedal steel, saw, percussion, strings, banjo, and some electronic drums. Lilting background vocals intertwine with Isakov’s watercolor-streaked murmur on “Powder,” while “Where You Gonna Go” applies haunting, echoing vocal effects to his voice.

Glen Phillips

Glen Phillips has always been a courageous and inviting songwriter. During his years as lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket, the band’s elegant folk/pop sound and his honest, introspective lyrics helped them forge a close bond with their fans. Since starting his solo career, Phillips has pared his music down to its emotional core, concentrating on the simple truths of love and relationships, with a profound spiritual understanding.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood 2018

by Genevieve Rhiger
September 4, 2018

In the middle of one of their most prolific periods to date, the band is riding a creative wave with a slew of studio and live records coming out amidst a rigorous tour schedule that only seems to fuel their fire even further. Their stellar new album, ‘Barefoot In The Head,’ marks the CRB’s third studio release in just two years, and it finds them pushing boundaries and breaking new ground with more joy and wonder than ever before. Overspilling with stunning musicianship and infectious energy, the album showcases the continued growth of Robinson’s songwriting partnership with his bandmates: guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Tony Leone, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, and bassist Jeff Hill. It revels in the kind of adventurousness that can only come from five artists tuned into the same sonic wavelength.

“Masterful players on a Grail-like search for the cosmic heart of California.” – MOJO

“…good-time music on an end-times mission.” – ROLLING STONE

“…trailblazing a wonderfully refreshing slice of ‘Rock N Roll’ music.” – AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

“…a celebration of how American musical traditions can be at once honored and psychedelically expanded.” – UNCUT

Megan Weston, Soprano and Michael Fennelly, Piano

by Gina Graham
August 22, 2018

Join Megan Weston and Michael Fennelly as they perform the exhilarating and elegant music of the nineteenth century and offer illuminating insights on the supremacy of opera, the triumph of the international virtuoso, and the reign of the Paris Salon. The acclaimed duo have been invited to appear in recital at the Berkshire Theater Festival, the Sembrich Museum (NY), the Metropolitan Opera Guild (Lincoln Center), Carnegie Hall, Dom Pedro V Theater (Macau), Tsinghua University (Beijing), and in such far-flung locations as Bora Bora and Antarctica.

Praised as a pianist with “flair and energy” (The New York Times), Dr. Michael Fennelly was recently knighted in Spain honoring his completion of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for solo piano, orchestra, and symphonic chorus. He has performed extensively on all seven continents, and appears next in recital at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in Monaco. Dr. Fennelly represented the US State Department on a tour of Japan, made his solo piano debut in Carnegie Hall, and was the US winner of the Horowitz Competition in Kiev, Ukraine.  MichaelFennelly.com

Recognized for her “remarkable virtuosity and charm” (Financial Times) and her “gorgeous, light lyric soprano” (Opera Magazine), Megan Weston has performed with orchestras, opera companies, and festivals throughout the world, including the Caramoor International Music Festival, San Diego Opera, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and most recently, the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice. The native Californian has won many prizes, including the Gerda Lissner Foundation International Competition and Santa Barbara’s own Léni Fé Bland Foundation Awards.  MeganWeston.com

“I have heard many pianists capture the fervor, the noise, the power of the Jazz Age, but Fennelly, in addition to the pounding chords brought out the warmth and singular beauty of the softer passages. Fennelly’s delicate touch caressed the audience and made his returns to the boisterous sections all the more stunning. His cadenzas were simply astonishing. They hit me like a lightning bolt. He catapulted the audience 2,000 feet in the air, taking them on a rocket-ride around the Chrysler building as he riffed on the Gershwin melody.” – The Huffington Post

“The jewel in the crown was guest soprano Megan Weston, whose vivid presence and radiant, seemingly effortlessly produced coloratura voice lent wings to the artfully designed and skillfully executed production. Lighting up the program at various junctures, Weston sang diverse numbers with the appropriate touches of virtuosity or heartfelt sentiment. Glamorously gowned in bright red satin, the attractive young soprano was as charming to behold as to listen to.” – Cape Cod Times
