The Capitol Steps 2020

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 14, 2020
We are sad to announce that the Capitol Steps are planning to shut down. Like many in the entertainment business, we simply weren’t built to survive going a year or more without live performances.
On the bright side, when we first started as a Senate office Christmas party, we never imagined we would travel the country and perform for 39 years! It’s been a fun ride!
For now, we will keep our office open and continue to sell our CDs on our web site. We’ve got lots! Grab them while you can!
So thank you to all the NPR stations who have played our specials, and all the agents, venues and companies who have booked us over the years.
Thank you to all the awesome performers who learned songs on frighteningly short notice and brought their hilarious characters to the stage. Thanks to the road crew who made us sound good, and the pianists who changed keys and followed our performers without missing a beat.
And – most importantly – thank you to all our fans who have bought tickets to our show. You kept us going all these years!

Many of you have generously expressed your support and concern by seeking to forego your ticket refund. If you are in a financial position to do so, we greatly appreciate these offers. Please let the box office staff know that you’ll be donating your ticket to support the Lobero Theatre.

What better time to see the Capitol Steps, the group that put the “mock” in “democracy” than now, with election season approaching? Don’t miss songs about the Democratic primary candidates (“76 Unknowns”) and the newest late-night thoughts from President Trump (“Tweet It”).  No one knows what the next election will bring, but whether it’s Joe Biden, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Beto O’Rourke, the Capitol Steps can tell you what rhymes with it! Whether you’re a Democrat or Republican (or somewhere in-between), if you’ve ever wanted to see Donald Trump sing a rock song, Bernie Sanders sing a show tune, and Vladimir Putin dance shirtless… this is the show for you!

Getting her start in the flourishing music scene of Southern California in the ’60s and ’70s, Karla Bonoff is one of the leading singer-songwriters of her generation. Her impressive career, which has spanned over four decades, includes opening for James Taylor and Jackson Browne, touring with Bonnie Raitt, as well as writing and recording songs for iconic films. Bonoff has enjoyed critical acclaim, enduring popularity, and the unwavering respect of her peers.

Ricky Skaggs

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 14, 2020

A life full of music. That’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age 21, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact.

Ricky struck his first chords on a mandolin over 50 years ago, and this 15-time Grammy Award winner continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. With 12 consecutive Grammy-nominated classics behind him, all from his own Skaggs Family Records label (Bluegrass Rules! in 1998, Ancient Tones in 1999, History of the Future in 2001, Soldier of the Cross, Live at the Charleston Music Hall, and Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe in 2003, Brand New Strings in 2005, Instrumentals in 2007, Salt of the Earth with The Whites in 2008, Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and 1947 in 2009 and Ricky Skaggs Solo: Songs My Dad Loved along with Mosaic in 2010), the diverse and masterful tones made by the gifted Skaggs come from a life dedicated to playing music that is both fed by the soul and felt by the heart.

“This group of guys meets my approval every night,” Ricky says. “Each and every one of the pickers in Kentucky Thunder totally amazes me in every show…and that, to me, outweighs any award we could ever win.” The all-star lineup of Kentucky Thunder includes Paul Brewster (tenor vocals, rhythm guitar), Russ Carson (banjo), Jake Workman (lead guitar), Mike Barnett (fiddle), Dennis Parker (baritone vocals, guitar) and Jeff Picker (bass, bass vocals).

An Evening with KT Tunstall (2)

by Gina Graham
January 8, 2020

GRAMMY® nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Tunstall is the official headliner of the Times Square New Year’s Eve 2022 live webcast and TV pool feed, where she’ll be performing two of her global chart-topping hits, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See,” among numerous other well-known songs. Since scoring a worldwide smash with her debut album Eye To The Telescope in 2004, which went on to sell over 5 million copies, KT Tunstall has remained at the forefront of UK singer-songwriter talent.

Over the next decade, three further critically acclaimed albums followed, keeping the platinum sales rolling and cementing the Scottish artist’s reputation as a major recording talent, as well as a mesmerizing live performer. Tunstall has toured the world over, with groups such as Simple Minds, The Pretenders, Barenaked Ladies, Hall and Oates, and more. Her latest studio album, WAX, received international acclaim, with a visceral focus on the electric guitar.

Newly added to open the show is Haley Johnsen, a Portland, Oregon-born musician with a knack for genre-bending and a hard-earned career path that is uniquely her own. Raised listening to powerhouse singers such as Brandi Carlile, Grace Potter, and Annie Lennox, her greatest inspirations become apparent in her soaring vocals, introspective lyricism, and cross-pollinated style of indie-pop, and bluesy folk rock music. Whether her songs muse on the aches of self-doubt, the joy that can accompany nostalgia, or simply trying to stay afloat in tough times, her bona fide songwriting combined with her performance ability is bound to evoke an emotional response.

All tickets for the original and rescheduled dates will be honored for the rescheduled show at the Lobero Theatre on January 21, 2022. If you can’t make the rescheduled date, you can request a refund by contacting the Lobero Theatre Box Office at 805.963.0761 or by emailing boxoffice@lobero.org Monday–Friday 10 AM–5 PM, and Saturday noon–5 PM.

Taj Mahal Sextet

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 6, 2020
Taj Mahal is a towering musical figure – a legend who transcended the blues not by leaving them behind, but by revealing their magnificent scope to the world. A brilliant artist with a musicologist’s mind, he has pursued and elevated the roots of beloved sounds with boundless devotion and skill. Then, as he traced origins to the American South, the Caribbean, Africa, and elsewhere, he created entirely new sounds, over and over again. As a result, he’s not only a god to rock-and-roll icons such as Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, but also a hero to ambitious artists toiling in obscurity who are determined to combine sounds that have heretofore been ostracized from one another.

No one is as simultaneously traditional and avant-garde. Quantifying Taj’s significance is impossible, but people try anyway. A 2017 Grammy win for TajMo, his collaboration with Keb’ Mo’, brought his GRAMMY® tally to three wins and 14 nominations, and underscored his undiminished relevance more than 50 years after his solo debut. Blues Hall of Fame membership, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association, and other honors punctuate his résumé.

All tickets for the original performance(s) will be honored for the rescheduled show at the Lobero Theatre.
