Gregory Alan Isakov

by Genevieve Rhiger
August 25, 2021

Gregory Alan Isakov has cast an impressive presence on the indie-folk music scene with his five full-length studio albums: That Sea, The Gambler; This Empty Northern Hemisphere; The Weatherman; Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony; and Evening Machines (nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for Best Folk Album). Isakov tours internationally with his band, and has performed with several national symphony orchestras across the United States. His deep lyrical masterpieces tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now calling Colorado home, the artist has become widely known these past few years not just for his noteworthy work as a musician, but his deep passion for horticulture, often using gardening and sustainable farming to keep him grounded when he isn’t on tour. In addition to owning his independent record label, Suitcase Town Music, he also manages a small farm in Boulder County, which provides produce to the farm’s CSA members and to local restaurants.

The evening will also feature special guest, Israel Nebeker, a songwriter from the Oregon Coast. His intricate folk-driven songs create an intimate space akin to the rainy, wild, sandy landscapes of his home and to the people whose stories belong to it. Nebeker’s songs have achieved connection to a worldwide audience through his singing of the profoundly personal. His greatest successes have come through his role as songwriter/band leader/producer of Blind Pilot. His strong lyricism and colorful melodies have been at the center of the critically acclaimed band and the albums they have recorded. He has appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition, World Cafe, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Ellen Degeneres Show.

Ty Segall & Freedom Band

by Gina Graham
August 13, 2021

Rolling out of the mist and dust and silence of time, Ty Segall is behind the wheel of a sleek new ride, a confetti of pages torn from his ongoing saga blizzarding into the air behind him.

With Harmonizer, his first album in two years, Ty glides smoothly into unexpected territory, right where he likes to find himself! Responding to the challenge his new songs gave him: a synthtastic production redesign, Ty kicks back with bottom-heavy creativity, dialing up a wealth of guitar and keyboard settings to do the deed. Harmonizer is a glossy, barely-precedented sound for him, and truth, it enraptures the ear—but in Ty’s hands, the sound is also a tool that allows him to cut through dense undergrowth, making for some of his cleanest songs and starkest ideas to date. Harmonizer’s production model couches tightly-controlled beats in thick keyboard textures, with direct-input guitar signal whining and buzzing purposefully from left to right. The Freedom Band appear all over the record, but often one at a time, their contributions leaving a distinctive footprint on the proceedings wherever they appear. Operating in this airtight environment with an eye towards precision, feel, and explosive mass, Ty’s crafted a formidable listening encounter—and once you get between the lines, the need to know more grows more compelling with every song.

The thing about closed doors is they need opening again, no matter what happens. You open them and then you can pass through them. And there’s light on the other side. That’s what this album is about.

The first recording to be released from Ty’s just-completed Harmonizer Studios, Harmonizer benefits from a collaboration with Cooper Crain, who co-produced the album with Ty. The Venn diagram of these guys unites them in DIY/punk dyed-in-the-wooldom; Ty’s propers you know, but Cooper’s own unique journey in rhythm, minimalism and DIY (as heard on his productions with CAVE, Bitchin Bajas and Jackie Lynn) mines the depths around Ty’s peerless vocal attack and aid in the latest chapter of his never-ending search for unfathomably corrosive guitar sounds. Spoiler alert: they found some more!

Bursting with transcendent energy, Harmonizer is an extension of the classic style of Emotional Mugger and Sleeper, revisiting the lonely days and loathsome nights of the alienated, grown-up-wrong soul, to make it all right in the end.

PLEASE NOTE: Proof of covid vaccine required. No negative pcr tests accepted. No children under 5.

Brett Dennen

by Gina Graham
August 11, 2021

Flame-haired, six-foot-five, and with a singular gift for meditating on life’s most meaningful subjects with equal parts innocence and razor-sharp wit, you know Dennen from his decade-plus career as a singer/songwriter. With a successful string of albums and four Top Ten AAA singles, Dennen has cemented himself as a fixture in American folk music.

Like the man himself, the new album is a potpourri of experiences and sometimes seeming contradictions. Brett Dennen doesn’t take his time on this beloved earth for granted. He is intent on exploring the world and examining himself in the process. Hence, See The World. Peppered in equal parts with shrewd quips and vulnerable admissions, the album is ultimately an exploration of life’s deepest meaning.

A Suzuki trained violinist with roots in the theater, Sophia Boro has an affinity for the melodramatic and romantic. Her poetic lyrics are laced with metaphors and intricate stories, while her unique and sultry vocals lend to a 90’s-esq folk-rock sound, often compared to Fiona Apple. Boro combines the authenticity of southern roots with whimsical folk rock and the vulnerability of soul, together creating something that is both brand new and nostalgically familiar. She credits finding her voice and jump starting her career to the city of Lincoln, Nebraska, where she attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The city welcomed her with an inclusive hometown feeling, creating a space to be comfortably honest with her craft. It wasn’t long before Boro picked up a guitar and wrote her first song. Now based in Nashville, TN, Sophia self-released her debut single “I Figure Now” (prod. Rob Arthur, keyboardist for Peter Frampton). The single is the first of many, with more produced by Rob Arthur, and others by Ian Miller (MD for Brett Eledredge). Remaining independent, Boro has cultivated a supportive community in Nashville and looks forward to more collaborations and live performances in 2021.

The David Grisman Dawg Trio is known for their unique compelling hybrid of bluegrass, jazz, Latin rhythms, klezmer music, and myriad global influences. For nearly half a century, mandolinist, composer, bandleader, producer David Grisman has been a guiding force in the evolving world of acoustic music. He began his career during the explosive folk and blues revival of the 1960s, working in the Even Dozen Jug Band with future stars Maria Muldaur and John Sebastian before launching a career as a solo artist and a collaborator with gypsy jazz legend Stéphane Grappelli, Del McCoury, Red Allen, Bonnie Raitt, and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, among others. Grisman’s iconic 1975 acoustic quintet album with Jerry Garcia, Old and in the Way, became one of the best-selling bluegrass albums of all time.

Banjo virtuoso Danny Barns was a founding member of the Austin string trio Bad Livers and recipient of the 2015 Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. He has collaborated with various well-known artists over the years, including Bill Frisell, the Dave Matthews Band, and more.

Sam Grisman made his recording debut at age eight with John Hartford, Mike Seeger and his father, David Grisman on their GRAMMY® nominated album, Retrograss. Since then, he has played and/or recorded with Darol Anger, Luke Bulla, Noam Pikelny, Tim O’Brien, Bryan Sutton, the Milk Carton Kids, and numerous others. Growing up in a dawg music-rich environment exposed Sam to many players and styles, making him one of the “go to” bassists of his generation.
