Jordi Savall is one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our times. For more than 50 years, his career as a master of the viola da gamba, and as a researcher and recording artist has made him one of the principal architects of the ongoing revaluation of early music—rescuing historical musical gems from obscurity, and creating a world of musical emotion and beauty shared with millions of early-music enthusiasts around the world.

Among the biggest surprises of Jordi Savall’s storied career was the international blockbuster success of his soundtrack for the award-winning 1991 French film Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings of the World). In the dazzling cinematic tradition of Amadeus, Tous les matins du monde is one of the most celebrated films ever to explore the art of music—a provocative work of historical fiction set in 17th-century France during the reign of Louis XIV. Legendary actor Gerard Depardieu portrays the eminent elder French composer Marin Marais looking back at his young life when he was briefly a pupil of the reclusive bass viol master Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe who lived a secluded life with his two daughters, and whose lives are forever changed by the vivacious young Marais. This profound film was winner of seven French César Awards including Best Picture and Best Soundtrack (for Jordi Savall who created the awarding-winning soundtrack).  Watch the Trailer for Tous les matins du monde

The Santa Barbara music and film community is invited to the Lobero Theatre on Sunday afternoon February 20 at 3:00PM for a Free Screening of Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings of the World). The film will be screened as a cinematic preview for the upcoming concert by Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations, appearing Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30PM to launch CAMA’s 2022 Masterseries season. The concert features a full program of music from Tous les matins du monde, including works by Marin Marais, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, François Couperin, and Jean-Baptiste Lully.

Aoife O’Donovan

by Genevieve Rhiger
November 1, 2021

GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Aoife O’Donovan operates in a thrilling musical world beyond genre. Deemed “a vocalist of unerring instinct” by the New York Times, she has released two critically-acclaimed and boundary-blurring solo albums including In the Magic Hour, which Rolling Stone hailed for its “Impressionistic, atmospheric songs [that] relay their narratives against gorgeous pastoral backdrops.” O’Donovan spent the Winter and Spring of 2021 in the studio with acclaimed producer Joe Henry (Bonnie Raitt, Rhiannon Giddens) recording Age of Apathy, her third full-length solo album, out January 21, 2022.

Taylor Ashton is a Canadian singer and songwriter living in Brooklyn. He spent the first half of his twenties on the road across Canada as frontman of the band Fish & Bird before moving to New York to work on a new set of songs and a new chapter of life. His music takes influence from the cosmic emotionality of Joni Mitchell, the sage vulnerability of Bill Withers, the humour and heartbreak of Randy Newman, and old-time and Celtic folk music. Alternately accompanying himself on clawhammer banjo and electric guitar, Taylor croons poignantly clever lyrical insights while effortlessly gliding between a Bill Callahan-esque baritone to a Thom Yorke-like falsetto.

Watchhouse

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 27, 2021

Starting over a decade ago playing coffee shops and local restaurants, multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Andrew Marlin and fiddler/vocalist Emily Frantz have “redefined roots music for a new generation” (Washington Post) as they’ve taken their music to millions of Spotify listeners, historic venues, NPR’s Tiny Desk, and more. Formerly known as Mandolin Orange, the duo recently recorded their most audacious album yet and decided it was finally time to change their name — to Watchhouse. The name, like the new record itself, represents their reinvention as a band at the regenerative edges of subtly experimental folk-rock. Their self-titled debut album, which would have been Mandolin Orange’s sixth album, has gone #1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums Chart. It’s a tribute to the unique alchemy of the new album, which sees the band embarking on a bold and poetic artistic reinvention that imbues their Appalachian-steeped folk with ambient drone, gauzy soul horns, and experimental texture. Alongside drummer Joe Westerlund, guitarist Josh Oliver, and bassist Clint Mullican, Andrew and Emily indulged novel structures and textures. Revolutionary kindness, social responsibility, collective understanding: these simple but staggering ideas are the unseen threads of Watchhouse, a miraculous expression of measured domestic protest. Watchhouse, co-produced by Josh Kaufman (The National, Bonny Light Horseman), has already received praise from Rolling Stone, MOJO, NPR Music, American Songwriter, No Depression, GLIDE and more.

Sacramento songwriter TréBurt’s sophomore album, You,Yeah,You, is a narrated collection of songs featuring a cast of invented characters; heroes, villains, those destitute of salvation and those seeking it. This is Burt’s second release on OhBoyRecords, the label founded by the late John Prine who signed the songwriter in the fall of 2019. On You, Yeah, You, Burt teamed up with Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, Nathaniel Rateliff) to create the album that reads like twelve rounds in a ring, summoning the will to fight the unknown rather than surrender to fear and fatigue. You, Yeah, You is a cohesive body of work that clearly illustrates the ever expanding space in which Tré Burt’s voice belongs.

Andrew Duhon and the Bryan Titus Trio

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 13, 2021

Andrew Duhon is a songwriter from New Orleans whose ability to craft a 3-minute novel has earned him comparisons to John Prine and Jim Croce, while the powerful soul of his voice evokes a youthful Van Morrison. He has released four recordings, including his 2014 release, The Moorings, which was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for “Best Engineered Album.” His latest album, False River is described by American Songwriter as “fresh, innovative, and complicated in all the right ways.” His most frequent touring outfit is a trio consisting of upright bass, drums, and three-part harmonies that bring the sonic landscape of his songs to life.

The Bryan Titus Trio grows up like a weed from a tangled and overgrown history of Bluegrass and American Roots Music. Recently touted as a “Postmodern Barn Dance” band they write & perform toe-tapping tunes that evoke themes & melodies of yesterday with a pinch of modern irony. Bryan Titus draws heavily on lessons learned on his 2013 Through Hike of the Appalachian Trail, especially the music he picked up in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, & Virginia. His vocals are both smooth & rough, his guitar playing simultaneously elegant & primitive. Jeff Kranzler (Upright Bass) & Dustin Janson (Cajon and vocal) fill out and enhance each song with concise & deliberate accompaniment.

Men At Work

by Genevieve Rhiger
August 31, 2021

Men At Work were born in Melbourne, Australia in the middle of 1979. The band went on to become a globally successful GRAMMY® winning, multi-platinum selling act during the early 80’s. The original band however came apart relatively quickly and had disintegrated by 1985. Colin Hay and Greg Ham responded to demand and toured many parts of the world as Men At Work from 1996 into the 2000s. Sadly, Greg Ham passed away in 2012. Founding member Colin Hay has developed a solo career over the last 35 years, writing, recording, and touring extensively throughout the world as a solo artist. He is presently part of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. Since 2019, he has also toured and played under the Men At Work banner with his LA based group of musicians, where he plays an exclusively Men At Work set, including all the hits and dearly loved songs which clearly have stood the test of time.

Gregory Alan Isakov

by Genevieve Rhiger
August 25, 2021

Gregory Alan Isakov has cast an impressive presence on the indie-folk music scene with his five full-length studio albums: That Sea, The Gambler; This Empty Northern Hemisphere; The Weatherman; Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony; and Evening Machines (nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for Best Folk Album). Isakov tours internationally with his band, and has performed with several national symphony orchestras across the United States. His deep lyrical masterpieces tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now calling Colorado home, the artist has become widely known these past few years not just for his noteworthy work as a musician, but his deep passion for horticulture, often using gardening and sustainable farming to keep him grounded when he isn’t on tour. In addition to owning his independent record label, Suitcase Town Music, he also manages a small farm in Boulder County, which provides produce to the farm’s CSA members and to local restaurants.

The evening will also feature special guest, Israel Nebeker, a songwriter from the Oregon Coast. His intricate folk-driven songs create an intimate space akin to the rainy, wild, sandy landscapes of his home and to the people whose stories belong to it. Nebeker’s songs have achieved connection to a worldwide audience through his singing of the profoundly personal. His greatest successes have come through his role as songwriter/band leader/producer of Blind Pilot. His strong lyricism and colorful melodies have been at the center of the critically acclaimed band and the albums they have recorded. He has appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition, World Cafe, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Ellen Degeneres Show.
