Hallelujah Project 8

by Gina Graham
August 12, 2022

A perennial holiday favorite, The Choral Society’s Hallelujah Project is a concert that delights young and old!  Beloved carols, a visit from Santa, a reading of “’Twas The Night Before Christmas” and the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah headline an audience-friendly program that includes a guest appearance of children from The Music Academy’s SING! Program. Reading the Christmas story this year will be Scott Reed, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Music Academy. And Santa – well, he will swoop in just in time for the end of the story, and will hand out candy canes to good little boys and girls after the concert.

Following on the heels of its participation in the Santa Barbara Symphony’s production of Carmina Burana (October 15/16), The Hallelujah Project is the first concert of The Choral Society’s celebratory 75th Anniversary. This season also marks Artistic Director/Conductor Jo Anne Wasserman’s 30th year with The Choral Society.

Spencer The Gardener
remains a celebrated live musical experience and is still packing house-parties and theaters up and down the coast. We all know Gardens aren’t always filled with roses, so in our documentary portion of the event, our film takes a look at what makes this local hero tick, and how his love of music, surfing, friends, and family has kept our community dancing for over four decades.

CAMA 22/23 – Los Romeros

by Gina Graham
June 17, 2022

Featuring All Living Members of

THE ROYAL FAMILY OF THE GUITAR:
CELÍN, PEPE, ÁNGEL, LITO, and CELINO ROMERO

Presented by CAMA and the Lobero Theatre Foundation
In Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Los Romeros
And the 150th Anniversary of the Lobero Theatre
(February 22, 1873 – February 22, 2023)

Legendary Spanish guitarist Celedonio Romero left his native country in 1957 when his artistic freedom was jeopardized under the Fascist regime of Generalisimo Franco. The Romero family secured permission to travel to Portugal to visit a sick relative, and quickly booked passage from Lisbon to New York, then on to Los Angeles, eventually settling in Santa Barbara. In June 1958 Celedonio made his United States recital debut at the Lobero Theatre, returning the next year with his three sons, Celín, Pepe and Ángel, each performing solo guitar works. Then, in April 1961, the family performed together at the Lobero as The Romeros. the first guitar quartet on the international concert scene. In 1990, Celín’s son Celino joined the quartet, when Angel left to pursue a solo career; and in 1996, Ángel’s son Lito joined following Celedonio’s death that year. Thus three generations of the Romero musical dynasty have come to be celebrated worldwide over the past 60+ years as “The Royal Family of the Guitar.”  The Romeros’s voluminous discography spans the entire repertoire of the classical guitar from the works of its earliest composers to those of today’s masters.

PROGRAM:

Works by VIVALDI, GRANADOS, BARRIOS, VILLA-LOBOS, TÁRREGA, BOCCHERINI, DE FALLA, BIZET, ALBÉNIZ, IRADIER, GIMÉNEZ, and Los Romeros Founder CELEDONIO ROMERO
