Lindsey Buckingham

by Josh James
January 27, 2022

Lindsey Buckingham is one of the most inventive and electrifying musicians of his generation. His instinct for melody and his singular fingerpicking guitar style are showcased on the seven studio and three live albums he has released as a solo artist, beginning with 1981’s Law and Order and continuing through 2021’s Lindsey Buckingham, his first solo release since 2011’s Seeds We Sow. Entertainment Weekly called the new album “a California pop-rock meditation that draws on his Golden State roots and probes what Buckingham knows best: the intricacies of relationships” and named it one of the year’s 10 best, while Newsweek hailed it for featuring “all the recognizable elements of his sound: melodic hooks, intricate production, multilayered vocals, and shimmering guitar.” Buckingham debuted the new material on a 2021 North American tour, during which Glide praised his live guitar playing as “captivating and flawless.”

Over the last four decades, Buckingham has developed a radical sense of experimentation and an unrivaled savvy as a producer, skills he first honed as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, and the musical visionary of Fleetwood Mac, where he wrote and produced several Top Ten hits, including “Go Your Own Way” and “Big Love.” Under Buckingham’s direction, Fleetwood Mac became one of the best-selling and most beloved rock groups of all time. As a solo artist, Buckingham often plays nearly every instrument himself; his complex arrangements and inventive production choices make his solo work thrilling to experience. In 2020, he appeared on The Killers’ single “Caution” and last year joined Halsey to perform her single ‘’Darling’’ on “Saturday Night Live.” He remains a highly sought-after collaborator, a maverick, and a visionary

Marcus Roberts Trio

by Josh James
January 20, 2022

Artist Residency presented in partnership with The Santa Barbara Symphony

The Marcus Roberts Trio – a long-term musical partnership between pianist, Marcus Roberts, the phenomenal drummer Jason Marsalis, and gifted bassist Rodney Jordan

The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style and entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. While most jazz trios have the piano front and center, all members of the Marcus Roberts Trio share equally in shaping the direction of the music by changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form at any time. And they do this with lightning quick musical reflexes and creative imagination. The trio is known for having almost telepathic communication on the stage. And more than a few concert goers have been heard to say that it sounds like a lot more than three people up there on the stage!

“One way Roberts individualizes his sound is by utilizing orchestral devices initially borrowed from the Ahmad Jamal Trio. In the course of a single piece, he constantly modulates grooves, tempos and keys, plays separate time signatures with the right hand and the left, and, as he puts it, “flips around the roles of the piano, bass and drums by giving everyone an equal opportunity to develop the concepts and themes, to change the form, to get us where we’re getting ready to go.” Ted Panken, Jazziz Magazine

Added to the logic and balanced trio style of Ahmad Jamal, is the swing and virtuosity of the Oscar Peterson Trio, combined with the buoyant joyous sound of Erroll Garner. These influences provide a rich foundation for the ever evolving and expanding sound of the Marcus Roberts Trio. The musical cues combine with musical inspiration from all over the world, which guarantees that audiences never know where this trio is heading; influences from Africa, Europe, and South America are combined with American traditions to give this group an infinite palate of styles, timbres and colors to draw from.

Don’t miss additional performances of the Marcus Roberts Trio in “Riffing on Gershwin” – playing the music of George Gershwin and Florence Price with the Santa Barbara Symphony on May 21st and 22nd at the Granada Theatre.    Tickets available now

Get The Led Out

by Josh James
January 14, 2022

The Philadelphia-based group, which consists of six veteran musicians, delivers a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity. Performing blues-soaked, groove-driven rock anthems with passion and fury, the band has amassed a strong national touring history. From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. Utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. Dubbed by the media as “The American Led Zeppelin,” Get The Led Out offers a strong focus on the early years. They also touch on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever heard in concert. GTLO also include a special “acoustic set” with Zep favorites such as “Tangerine” and “Hey Hey What Can I Do.”

Paul Sinclair – Lead Vocals, Harmonica
Paul Hammond – Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Mandolin, Theremin
Jimmy Marchiano – Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Vocals
Andrew Lipke – Keyboards, Guitar, Vocals, Percussion
Adam Ferraioli – Drums, Percussion
Phil D’Agostino – Bass
Eddie Kurek – Bass, Vocals

Sarah Jarosz

by Josh James
December 13, 2021

With her captivating voice and richly detailed songwriting, Sarah Jarosz has emerged as one of the most compelling musicians of her generation. A four-time GRAMMY® Award-winner at the age of 30, the Texas native started singing as a young girl and became an accomplished multi-instrumentalist by her early teens. After releasing her full-length debut Song Up in Her Head at 18-years-old, she went on to deliver such critically lauded albums as Follow Me Down, Build Me Up From Bones, and 2016’s Undercurrent, in addition to joining forces with Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan to form the acclaimed GRAMMY® winning folk trio, I’m With Her.

In the making of her new album World On the Ground, the New York City-based artist collaborated with producer/songwriter John Leventhal: a five-time GRAMMY® Award-winner known for his work with Elvis Costello, Shawn Colvin, and his wife Rosanne Cash. Working almost entirely on their own, the two musicians crafted a subtle tapestry of sound perfectly suited to Jarosz’s lyrical storytelling. In a departure from the nuanced introspection of her previous work, World On the Ground unfolds as a finely wrought collection of stories from her hometown of Wimberley, Texas (population: 2,626), presenting a series of character sketches nearly novelistic in emotional scope. As she inhabits characters both real and imagined — exploring the tension and inertia of small-town living, the desire for escape and the ease of staying put — Jarosz reveals her remarkable gift for slipping into the inner lives of others and patiently uncovering so much indelible insight.

An Evening with Al Franken

by Josh James
December 9, 2021

As far as anyone knows, Al Franken is the only U.S. Senator who was also one of the original writers for Saturday Night Live. During his fifteen seasons with SNL, Franken won five Emmy Awards for writing and producing. He’s also the author of four #1 New York Times bestsellers, including Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other ObservationsLies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them – A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, and Al Franken, Giant of the Senate.

Franken served Minnesota in the Senate from 2009-2018, clobbering his first opponent, incumbent Senator Norm Coleman, by 312 votes. He won his second election by well over 200,000 votes. Franken served on the Judiciary, Energy, Indian Affairs, and HELP (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions) Committees where he routinely embarrassed badly prepared witnesses and was a fierce opponent of media concentration, mandatory arbitration, and Betsy DeVos.

The Al Franken Podcast is one of the nation’s top-ten politics and public affairs podcasts with guests like Malcolm Nance, Sarah Silverman, Paul Krugman, Chris Rock, and Michelle Obama. Well, not Michelle Obama, but guests like her.

His political action committee, Midwest Values PAC, supports progressive Democrats, voting rights, and a host of other good, non-political things.

Al and his wife, Franni, have been married for 45 years, many of them happy. They have two kids and four grandchildren.

Richard Thompson

by Josh James
December 1, 2021

Richard Thompson – a pioneer of folk-rock, hugely influential singer-songwriter, and one of Britain’s most astonishing guitarists – began his career in music nearly 55 years ago. Powered by evocative songcraft, jaw-dropping guitar playing, and indefinable spirit, this venerable icon holds a coveted spot-on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and counts a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association in Nashville, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Awards among his many accolades.

Jessie Payo is a true original independent artist that writes Americana/country material in a mature and distinctive voice. It’s rare to hear songs just once where they stay in your mind and linger in your memory. Jessie Payo is that artist. Poignant, moving, introspective, analytical and self critical, Payo’s material covers the spectrum of emotions delving into the human psyche.

ELTON DAN

Dan is the lead singer of Elton Dan & the Rocket Band. He has been playing the piano since he was 10 years old. From childhood, Dan’s hero in music was Elton John for both the wonderful music he made and the humanitarian contributions the band honored. Dan has persisted in keeping the same traditions in the band he created to honor his music hero Elton John and the legacy and culture of what the Elton John Band stands for.

Today, Elton Dan and the Rocket Band play songs for 7 of the Elton John Albums, including crowd favorites “Amorrena”, “Funeral for a Friend”, “Bennie and the Jets”, “Bitch is Back”, “Sweet Painted Lady”, “Pinball Wizard”, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, and “Levon”. 21-22 Youth Symphony (May)

by Gina Graham
November 9, 2021

Heralded as “…a prestigious group of young, talented musicians…” by Santa Barbara SEASONS magazine, the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony brings together 70-80 gifted musicians, ages 12-18, from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties to perform works across the orchestral repertoire. This advanced ensemble instills the discipline and commitment that budding young professionals need for the next step in their careers, whether in music or another field.

The Santa Barbara Symphony is pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Westmont College. Under the overarching artistic and curriculum oversight of our Music & Artistic Director, Nir Kabaretti  and Westmont’s Dr. Michael Shasberger, the partnership brings additional resources to our music education program, new opportunities for our students, and complements our pipeline of connected programs from elementary school, to college and on to a professional orchestra.

“The student experience in the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony is totally unique. Where else can my child learn and perform musical masterpieces in a symphony orchestra made up of their peers? The environment is so fun and supportive, rehearsals are the highlight of our week!”
