Mary Chapin Carpenter

by Gina Graham
March 7, 2022

With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” Mary Chapin Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards (with 16 nominations), two CMA awards, two Academy of Country Music awards and is one of only fifteen female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Over the course of her acclaimed career, Carpenter has sold over 16 million records. In 2020, Carpenter recorded two albums – “The Dirt And The Stars,” released in August 2020, and “One Night Lonely,” recorded live without an audience at the legendary Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Virginia during the COVID-19 shut down, and nominated for “Best Folk Album” at the 64th Grammy Awards in 2022.

Of the new album “The Dirt And The Stars,” produced by Ethan Johns (Ray LaMontagne, Paul McCartney, Kings of Leon) and recorded entirely live at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath in southwest England, Carpenter quotes the writer Margaret Renkl, “ ‘We are all in the process of becoming.’ That doesn’t stop at a certain age. To be always a student of art and music and life, as she says, that, to me, is what makes life worth living. The songs are very personal and they’re difficult in some ways, and definitely come from places of pain and self-illumination, but also places of joy, discovery and the rewards of self- knowledge. They arrived from looking outward as much as inward, speaking to life changes, growing older, politics, compassion, #metoo, heartbreak, empathy, the power of memory, time and place. There are many themes, but they all come back to that initial truth that we are all constantly ‘becoming’ through art and expression.”

With special guest John Craigie

Renowned for his eloquent Americana style, engaging live shows, and off-the-cuff clever observations, John Craigie carries on the legacy of classic folk singers while blazing a trail of his own. Hailed as a “Modern-Day Troubadour” in the style of Woody Guthrie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Craigie has travelled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He has performed with or opened for numerous well-known artists, including Jack Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Sean Hayes, among many others, and sold out shows across the country. Captivating anecdotes from the road have endeared Craigie to the devoted fans he has earned, song by song, show by show, since 2009. The artist has a degree in mathematics and also went through a self-described “hippie phase” while in college. When you learn that, it becomes easier to wrap your head around the title of his 2020 album. Asterisk the Universe finds Craigie sharing his clever observations and humorous stories with a score of smoked-out soul, tender folk, and American songbook eloquence.

Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings of the World)

by Gina Graham
January 28, 2022

Jordi Savall is one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our times. For more than 50 years, his career as a master of the viola da gamba, and as a researcher and recording artist has made him one of the principal architects of the ongoing revaluation of early music—rescuing historical musical gems from obscurity, and creating a world of musical emotion and beauty shared with millions of early music enthusiasts around the world.

Among the biggest surprises of Jordi Savall’s storied career was the international blockbuster success of his soundtrack for the award winning 1991 French film Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings of the World)In the dazzling cinematic tradition of Amadeus, Tous les matins du monde is one of the most celebrated films ever to explore the art of music—a provocative work of historical fiction set in 17th century France during the reign of Louis XIV. Legendary actor Gerard Depardieu portrays the eminent elder French composer Marin Marais looking back at his young life when he was briefly a pupil of the reclusive bass viol master Monsieur de Sainte Colombe who lived a secluded life with his two daughters, and whose lives are forever changed by the vivacious young Marais. This profound film was winner of seven French César Awards including Best Picture and Best Soundtrack (for Jordi Savall who created the awarding winning musical soundtrack).

The Santa Barbara music and film community is invited to the Lobero Theatre on Sunday afternoon February 20 at 3:00PM for a Free Screening of Tous les matins du monde (All the Mornings of the World).  The film will be screened as a cinematic preview for the upcoming concert by Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations, appearing Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30PM to launch CAMA’s 2022 Masterseries season. The concert features a full program of music from Tous les matins du monde, including works by Marin Marais, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe, François Couperin, and Jean Baptiste Lully.
