The Surge: An Ode to Sinéad O’Connor
This event is a rental and not a Lobero presentation
“Tayeh makes movement that feels ancient and new, ritualized and chaotic, punk and elegant, all at once.” Times Union
“Tayeh’s choreography – expertly performed by a delightful and delighted polymorphous ensemble – is a perpetual motion machine of often bruising sensuality.” The New York Times
In this original evening-length work, Tony Award-winning choreographer Sonya Tayeh (Moulin Rouge!) draws on the music and words of Sinéad O’Connor to create a fierce, tender meditation on voice, protest and the courage to defy the norm. Performed by a 10-woman ensemble, The Surge channels O’Connor’s indomitable spirit through movement and narration in a work of striking emotional force. Acclaimed for her “powerful physical style” by modern dance luminaries including Janet Eilber (Martha Graham Dance Company), Tayeh has emerged as a defining voice in contemporary dance theater.
