John Waters

by Gina Graham
June 18, 2025

Ok, John Waters is finally coming clean, so to speak, and his all-new, secret-sharing, one-man crackpot comedy show dares to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the filthy truth. It’s an endless bag of trans-gressive and hetero-nonaggressive twisted tales that will warm the dark little hearts of non-binary brats all over the world. Over-sharing? You bet. Too much information? Maybe so, but airing his dirty laundry makes Waters feel clean. He’ll talk to you straight even when he’s definitely not.

Dawes Duo

by Josh James
May 27, 2025

“This tour will be just Griffin and I. Drums and guitar. Finding new ways to present material from our entire catalogue, distilled down to its only the most essential ingredients. We’ve done this a lot recently and found that the material and the focus of the shows take on a whole new dimension. These will be some fun nights.”

For the first time in almost a decade, brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith grace the cover of a Dawes record. It’s just the two of them this time, and as such, Oh Brother marks a distinctive new chapter for the California rock band — one that is both introspective and accessible, all while maintaining their beloved sense of sincerity.

Oh Brother steers Dawes decidedly forward, honoring 15 years of Taylor and Griffin’s musical relationship, as well as the next era of their band. Each of the nine songs began with just Taylor on guitar and vocals and Griffin on drums. They initially tracked each one live together, before adding in additional instrumentation and collaborating with touring guitarist Trevor Menear in the studio. Additionally, Oh Brother is the first record the brothers have co-produced, working alongside longtime friend Mike Viola.

At this point in the Goldsmith’s career, Dawes has cemented itself as one of the most earnest, no-bullshit musical acts out there. They’re a band that can move seamlessly between folk rock, piano ballads, and sprawling jams while maintaining both an immediately recognizable sound and a freedom from expectations. Even as the Goldsmith brothers navigates new chapters in their personal and professional lives, Oh Brother shows how they remain creative, ambitious, and inspired — what it means to be lifers in a band together.

The Earthquake That Built a City

by Gina Graham
May 9, 2025

On the morning of June 29, 1925, a powerful earthquake struck Santa Barbara—flattening buildings and forever altering the city’s trajectory. One hundred years later, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Santa Barbara presents The Earthquake That Built a City, a special 90-minute symposium exploring how disaster gave rise to vision, resilience, and a distinctive architectural identity.

Moderated by renowned architect and historian Robert L. Ooley, FAIA, this compelling evening brings together leading voices to reflect on the cultural, architectural, and civic transformations that followed the quake. Historian Neal Graffy recounts the day the city shook. Architect Anthony Grumbine, AIA, traces the rise of Spanish Colonial Revival style from the rubble. Engineers Sage M. Shingle, PE, or Garrett W. Mills, PE, discuss innovations in seismic safety. Urbanist Drew Wensley explores how planning can guide communities from recovery to renewal.

Through vivid storytelling and expert insight, the symposium offers a powerful lens on how Santa Barbara’s built environment—and spirit—was shaped by catastrophe and vision. A post-event reception with light refreshments will follow.

Open to the public. Ideal for residents, architects, students, planners, and anyone who loves Santa Barbara.

Join us for an unforgettable night of history, reflection, and community connection.
