SP Jazz – Charles Lloyd/Bill Frisell

by Genevieve Rhiger
November 24, 2014

The tenor giant brings together a fellowship of his favorite musical partners, including members of his New Quartet and guitar luminary Bill Frisell.

Saxophonist Charles Lloyd is a forward-thinking “musician’s musician.” His supreme improvisational talents and passion for cross-pollinating jazz with rock as well as non-Western styles of music during the ‘60s and ‘70s established him as one of the key figures in the development of fusion and world music.

“Every Lloyd concert is unique. And this one, with special guests Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz, was a striking display of contemporary jazz improvisation at its finest. “ — International Review of Music

“Mr. Lloyd is the rare jazz artist whose every appearance qualifies as an event… Mr. Lloyd sets the pace, and this performance conveyed much of what you’d need to know about his values as an artist: soulfulness, mindfulness, generosity, balance… His improvisations carried the hallmarks of a language steeped in history: bebop, softened with a slouch; midperiod Coltrane, filtered through a personal lens; down-home blues, translated into worldly spirit talk.” — New York Times

SP Jazz – Lewis/Pizzarelli

by Genevieve Rhiger
November 24, 2014

Nat King Cole broke the pop barrier with his smoky, smooth vocals, stringing along a huge number of solid hits right after his first “Straighten Up And Fly Right” soared up the charts in 1943. Ramsey Lewis and John Pizzarelli have crafted a tribute to the titan of fifties vocal pop, from his hits along with those singular tracks of sophisticated cool jazz that have influenced their own careers.

Celebrated composer, pianist and jazz legend Ramsey Lewis has an unequaled performance style that display his early gospel playing, classical training along and his love of jazz. A native Chicagoan, the three-time GRAMMY® winner and recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award represents the great diversity that defines the city. Lewis first captivated fans with his debut album, Ramsey Lewis And The Gentlemen of Swing, and by 1965, he was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with “The In Crowd,” “Hang On Sloopy” and “Wade In The Water.”

Using performers like Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John Pizzarelli has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing.

“Pizzarelli remains a master of Nat King Cole cool, swinging such standards as ‘Just In Time.’” – The Seattle Times

“It’s a mark of how much Lewis understands what people want from a piece of music that he remains one of jazz’s most broadly popular figures, yet still holds on to an unshakeable degree of respectability. ” – BBC

Ramsey Lewis – Piano

John Pizzarelli – Guitar

Joshua Ramos – Bass

“The standout male vocalist of our time” (The New York Times), Grammy Award winner Kurt Elling pays homage to the legendary male vocalist of the 20th century with Elling Swings Sinatra. In celebration of Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, Elling lends his own voice to Sinatra’s vast repertoire with reinterpretations of classic hits such as “Come Fly With Me,” “In The Still Of The Night,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” and “April In Paris.” These ever-familiar tunes are transformed by Elling’s superb vocal expertise, breathing new life into old favorites for today’s audiences. Celebrate the music of Sinatra in peak form — during an evening accented with richly told stories of a fascinating moment in time — as can only be provided by one of the foremost talents of our time, Kurt Elling.

Awakened World – A Place at the Table

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 7, 2014

“If another nation was doing this to our children, we’d be at war.” ~~ Jeff Bridges, Founder of the End Hunger Network

50 million people in the U.S.—one in four children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all Americans. Directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people who are struggling with food insecurity: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford.

Their stories are interwoven with insights from experts including sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and activists such as Witness to Hunger’s Mariana Chilton, Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Oscar®-winning actor Jeff Bridges.Ultimately, A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides—as they have in the past—that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all.

Awakened World – Walking the Camino

by Genevieve Rhiger
October 7, 2014

500 miles on foot. Bunk-beds. Blisters. Stunning landscapes. World-class snorers. Hot searing sun, freezing cold rain. Kindness from strangers. Debilitating injury. Unexpected romance. No toilet paper when you really need it. Profound grief and deep doubt. Hunger. Laughing with new friends. Total exhaustion. You are guaranteed to experience all of this when walking the ancient pilgrim path, the Camino de Santiago.Across Spain, this sacred path stretches westward to the city of Santiago de Compostela where the bones of the apostle St. James are said to be buried. The Camino is world-renowned; UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site and the Council of Europe declared it the first European Cultural Itinerary. Millions of people from all over the world have traveled this trail for over 1,000 years – in 2010 alone, over 270,000 people attempted the arduous trek – each one a seeker of something. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims sought forgiveness of their sins and admission to heaven. The Camino remains, for many, a quest of faith. Others begin with no spiritual impetus in mind, but nevertheless are drawn to examine their personal beliefs and life purpose. And others are in it simply for the intense physical challenge. Whatever their motivation, no one can predict just how their path will unfold, who they will meet, what personal demons or angels they will face, or what transformations they will undergo by the trail’s end.Walking the Camino is an up-close look at one of humanity’s most time-honored traditions. By following pilgrims from all walks of life as they attempt to cross an entire country on foot with only a backpack, a pair of boots and an open mind, we witness the Camino’s magnetic and miraculous power to change lives. Driven by an inexplicable calling and a grand sense of adventure, each pilgrim throws themselves heart-and-soul into their physical trek to Santiago and, most importantly, their personal journey to themselves.

What the Bleep Do We Know?! is a new type of film. It is part documentary, part story, and part elaborate and inspiring visual effects and animations. The protagonist, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesn’t even realize she has asked for. Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life – that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isn’t reality at all!As Amanda learns to relax into the experience, she conquers her fears, gains wisdom, and wins the keys to the great secrets of the ages, all in the most entertaining way. She is then no longer the victim of circumstances, but she is on the way to being the creative force in her life. Her life will never be the same. Read more . . .

Shaul, an Israeli, and Nizar, a Palestinian, seem to have little in common but for a shared spirit of entrepreneurship. They create a solar energy company with plans to bring renewable energy to communities in the Palestinian territories. Support for their venture is difficult to gain. From families who question them, to community members who threaten them, and government policies that make collaboration nearly impossible, Shaul and Nizar face many obstacles. Through everything, they grow to respect and trust one another. But though they continue to believe in their project, they recognize that their company cannot succeed without change. They take their story to the Internet and inspire others to work together. What began as a partnership for business becomes a partnership for peace.
