In My Life: Beatles Tribute

by Genevieve Rhiger
February 27, 2015

You already know and love the songs, but In My Life: A Musical Theatre Tribute to the Beatles gives you a chance to get a fresh perspective on the story of the band that made them. More than just a live musical tribute show, In My Life tells the Fab Four’s tale through the eyes of their late manager, Brian Epstein, who acts as narrator to renowned tribute band Abbey Road’s live performance of some 33 Beatles classics.

From their groundbreaking appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show to their final rooftop performance at the Apple Corp. offices, and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” to the psychedelic era of Sgt. Pepper’s and beyond, this exciting production gives new life to the story of rock’s greatest band.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken

by Genevieve Rhiger
February 19, 2015

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s John McEuen (a founding member) opens the evening with their story: a bunch of young 1960’s ‘west-coast longhair hippies’ trying to make it. Through live music, historic photos and film, the Lobero audience finds out how this iconic California band’s rocky past led to successes and Nashville. McEuen’s enthusiastic storytelling and music, coinciding with what is on the screen, all lead up to the story of that incredible week in August, 1971.

This unique multi-media show then celebrates Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s landmark ‘Circle’ album (initiated by McEuen in 1971), and shows the audience how Carter Family music and Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin… and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) came together for the historic sessions. As John brings on John Carter Cash (with special guests) taking all down the path of these two driving forces in American Music – the NGDB and the music of The Carter Family.

John Carter (son of Johnny Cash and June Carter) takes the helm to relate the Carter Family story and heritage with narrative, and historic photographs from his personal archives. With music performed from the early Carter Family days by the ensemble, John Carter relates what it was like growing up with ‘Grandma Maybelle Carter’, and how A.P. Carter influenced his and his father’s life’s path.

This leads to how NGDB joined the icons of Country Music for a magic Nashville week in August of 1971 to create the classic multi-platinum album – Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

The full cast then performs songs from the ‘Circle’ album against the larger-than-life on screen photo-montage backdrop from the sessions. Special to this evening, another original NGDB member, bassist Les Thompson (1966-1976), will be part of the ensemble, along with fiddler Laura McGhee (from Scotland), Matt Cartsonis (mandola/guitar/vocals), and guitarist Dave Daeger. The audience is transported to that magic time with the performers for an exciting, unforgettable experience.

With bluegrass, country, gospel, and the roots of America’s acoustic music, songs from all the Circle albums’ artists (Wildwood Flower, Keep on the Sunnyside, I Am a Pilgrim, Cannonball Rag, Wreck on the Highway, Earl’s Breakdown, etc.), the evening ends with audience all joining in for the Carter family classic

Lucinda Williams

by Genevieve Rhiger
February 3, 2015

American rock, folk, blues and country music singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams is one of a kind. She has been maneuvering down a musical path all her own for more than three decades since emerging from Lake Charles, Louisiana, a town with rich traditions of indigenous American music. Several years of playing the hardscrabble clubs of her adopted state of Texas gave her a solid enough footing to record a self-titled album that would become a touchstone for the Americana movement–helping launch a thousand musical ships along the way. More than 30 years later, after having been named “America’s best songwriter” by TIME Magazine in 2002, Williams’ distinctive delta-infused country soul sound is as strong as ever. Though her songs offer poetry filled with pain and longing, Williams says, “People misunderstand me and think I’m this depressed person, and I’m not. At the end of the day, I’m an optimist.”

“She’s pithy and penetrating, bruised but steadfast, proud of the grain and drawl of her voice. Her music places itself in a vanishing, idealized Southland where country, soul, blues and gospel all share a common spirit and a vocabulary of twang.”  – The New York Times

SBIFF – Grasshopper for Grandpa

by Genevieve Rhiger
January 22, 2015

“Grasshopper for Grandpa” is the story of Jimmy’s Oriental Gardensa celebrated institution in Santa Barbara, CA for more than 60 years before closing its doors in 2006 with the retirement of owner Tommy Chung. Opened in 1947 by Tommy’s father, Jimmy Yee Chung, it’s now the last visible remnant of Chinatown, Santa Barbara. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the area in and around the Santa Barbara Presidio district was considered Chinatown.

The film is a portrait about Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens and explores why the place was so special to so many people. Also, why the special few who made Jimmy’s possible, like owner Tommy Chung and 30-year bartender Willy Gilbert, had that effect on so many patrons and passerby’s. In September of 2013, the bar reopened after being beautifully restored by longtime happy hour regular and patron, Bob Lovejoy, and his son, Clay.
