Arturo Sandoval

June 12, 2017

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, ARTURO SANDOVAL was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time and has been seen by millions at the Oscars, at the Grammy Awards, and the Billboard Awards.

Sandoval has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards, and nominated 19 times; he has also received 6 Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award. The latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country” that starred Andy Garcia as Arturo. His two latest Grammy award-winning albums, “Dear Diz “Everyday I think of you” and Tango “Como Yo Te Siento” are now available worldwide. Arturo Sandoval’s newest CD, Eternamente Manzanero. Performing the music of revered Mexican romantic pianist/singer/songwriter, Armando Manzanero, this is a true labor of love.

Brad Mehldau

by Gina Graham
June 12, 2017

One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. From critical acclaim as a bandleader to major international exposure in collaborations with Pat Metheny, Renee Fleming, and Joshua Redman, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. His forays into melding musical idioms, in both trio (with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums) and solo settings, has seen brilliant re-workings of songs by contemporary songwriters like The Beatles, Cole Porter, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Gershwin and Nick Drake; alongside the ever-evolving breath of his own significant catalogue of original compositions. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times).

James Vincent McMorrow

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 18, 2017

The Dublin-born singer/songwriter rose to fame upon the release of his platinum-selling debut album Early In The Morning, reaching #1 in his home country of Ireland, silver status in the UK, and earning a Choice Music Prize and EBBA award nomination in the process. In addition, there was an appearance on “Later… With Jools Holland.”

Sophomore album Post Tropical secured his place as a globally recognized musician, garnering a second nomination for the Choice Music Prize, among other accolades. It also led to multiple sold out tours across the world, in the biggest venues of his career including two nights at The Sydney Opera House, London’s Barbican and Shepherd’s Bush Empire, four nights in Dublin’s National Concert Hall, and one particularly epic late night tour bus jam through the entire Hall and Oates back catalog. Apparently, his mom prefers his first record, his Dad prefers his second.

Also known for his visually captivating videos, “Cavalier” has over 2 million views on YouTube alongside the stunning videos for “Red Dust” and “Glacier,” which were constructed by Northern Irish director Aoife McArdle as a trilogy to be played together. While touring for Post Tropical, McMorrow appeared at Coachella, Electric Picnic, Edmonton Folk Festival, Gentleman of the Road (Mumford & Sons), Latitude, and Lowlands Festival, among others.

James Vincent McMorrow announced today he will bring his new album, True Care, on tour throughout the summer which will include a stop at Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara. Each headline show will include a set consisting of True Care in full and then a set spanning his career to date. The album will be available next week (May 26th) via Caroline Records/AllPoints Recordings.

Aaron Neville

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 16, 2017

Grammy-award winning, R&B singer Aaron Neville, with his distinct New Orleans sound and unique voice, takes the Lobero stage this December for a soulful duo performance featuring Michael Goods on keyboards–a format that allows him to share songs spanning his career and stories of his influences growing up.

As a successful recording artist for more than 50 years, Aaron Neville’s distinctive, soulful voice continues to produce hit music spanning many genres and musical styles, so it’s no surprise Rolling Stone Critics’ Poll named him the best male singer in the world.

Until now, it’s been easy to separate Aaron Neville’s career into two separate but equal strains: the funky stuff he’s favored when working with his esteemed band of brothers, and the angelic balladry you associate with him when he’s punching his own time card as a solo artist. Casual fans might admit they don’t know much — to borrow a phrase — about Neville’s musical center, but they’ve perceived a certain split in his career. An education is about to be provided, then, in the form of Apache, a solo album that makes the case for Aaron Neville as the most holistic of soul men. Its hard R&B side matches anything the Neville Brothers ever recorded for true grit, while still allowing plenty of space for a singer who’s arguably the most distinctive vocal stylist on the planet to tell it like it is.

Floor to Air Festival

by Genevieve Rhiger
April 25, 2017

The first platform of its kind to highlight the organic relationship between grounded and flight-bound dance, the Santa Barbara Floor to Air Festival presents the ancient art of aerial technique from a decidedly contemporary point of view. Now in its fourth year, the festival unites professional artists from around the globe for a collaborative residency under sea and sky, culminating in an ensemble performance that blends distinctive movement languages with distinguishing approaches. Debuting on the Lobero stage before making its way across theatres and continents the world over, each of the three works presented will incorporate traditional apparatus in an unconventional light, using bodies and flight as metaphors for the human condition. Against a sonic backdrop of bass and strings, with staggering strength and touching vulnerability, the art of contemporary flight resonates with artistic prowess and the boundless optimism to search diligently for our proverbial wings, ascending to our highest potential.
