Richard Thompson 2019

by Genevieve Rhiger
August 7, 2019

Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 60’s, Richard Thompson and his mates virtually invented British Folk Rock. By the age of 21 he left the band to pursue his own career, followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist.

Thompson’s massive body of work includes over 40 albums, many Grammy nominations, as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Hertzog’s Grizzy Man. A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s music including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, REM, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, David Byrne, Don Henley and many others.

His most recent CD, Still, produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, reached #6 on the UK charts, (just ahead of Taylor Swift)!

Opening is Eliza Gilkyson, a two-time GRAMMY®-nominated singer, songwriter and activist who is one of the most respected musicians in Folk, Roots and Americana circles. Her songs have been covered by Joan Baez, Bob Geldof, Tom Rush and Rosanne Cash and have appeared in films, PBS specials and on prime-time TV.

Michael Nesmith and The First National Band

by Gina Graham
July 24, 2019

Singer – songwriter – pioneer: all words best describing Michael Nesmith. Starting in the Texas folk scene in 1963, he quickly blossomed into a brilliant tunesmith during his time on the Emmy award-winning The Monkees. His melodic, country-tinged songs were regularly featured on the band’s multi-million selling albums and singles, but he heard a greater creative calling to find his own voice as a record maker.

In the late 60’s, he brought his craft to new levels. During 1968, Michael Nesmith ventured to Nashville to record a series of groundbreaking sessions with local musicians. “I could just feel this happening, that there was this ‘thing,’” recalled Nez. “So, I headed off to Nashville to see if I couldn’t get some of the Nashville country thing into the rock’n’roll or vice versa.”

The recordings that resulted are now recognized as foundational in the country-rock and alt-country movements. His exploratory work caught the ear of legendary RCA A&R man, Felton Jarvis, who signed Nesmith and a new ensemble, the First National Band (pedal steel virtuoso Red Rhodes, bassist John London, and drummer John Ware) to wax the groundbreaking Magnetic South (1970). The album was the first part of an Americana trilogy, followed by Loose Salute (1970) and Nevada Fighter (1971), which spun off the chart hits “Joanne,” “Silver Moon,” “Nevada Fighter,” and “I’ve Just Begun To Care (Propinquity).”

Despite stellar reviews – Rolling Stone called Loose Salute, “one of the hippest country rock albums – commercial success was harder to come by and the First National Band soon scattered. Nez played out his remaining RCA albums with Red Rhodes and toured with him throughout the ‘70s, but the full-blown sounds of the First National Band were never to be heard on the concert stage again.

In January 2018, Michael Nesmith sold out The Troubadour in West Hollywood, performing his First National Music for the first time in four decades, backed by a stellar ten-piece band. Songs like “Different Drum” (a Top 20 hit for Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys), “Some of Shelly’s Blues” (covered by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), and The Monkees’ classic, “Papa Gene’s Blues” filled the room with warmth and splendor. Back by popular demand, Nez will once again perform this cherished music onstage in October 2019. This further series of shows will revisit and renew the music of the First National Band, along with such classics as “Rio” (a hit that led to his creation of MTV). He will also share stories from his recent autobiography, Infinite Tuesday.

Singing! Dancing! Paper!

It’s a typical morning at Scranton’s third largest paper company until, for no logical reason, a documentary crew begins filming the lives of the employees of Dunder Mifflin.

Don’t miss this hilarious, unauthorized parody of the hit TV show, The Office, featuring songs such as “Welcome to Scranton (The Electric City),” “That’s What She Said,” “The Dundies,” “Marry Me Beesly,” and more!

“The world’s most elaborate inside joke, created with a whole lot of love, just for fans.” – Mashable

“A boisterous, rejuvenating escape from reality that’ll fill the void in your heart.” – Mashable

“The Office! Musical serves as a master class in parody.” – TheaterPizzazz.com

“The show is straight, fast-paced comedy that explores nearly all (and I mean ALL) of the favorite moments from The Office… A must see for any fan of The Office.” – The Pop Break

Jim Messina

by Gina Graham
July 17, 2019

An undisputed expert in the fine art of making hit music, Jim Messina’s legacy of musical genius spans five decades, three super groups, a vibrant solo career and scores of producing and engineering credits.

While acting as producer/audio engineer for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield, Messina ultimately joined the band as its bass player.  When “the Springfield” disbanded in 1968, Jim and fellow bandmate Richie Furay formed Poco. With Jim on lead guitar, Poco defined a new musical genre, Country Rock. After three successful albums, Jim was ready for a change and left to return to his passion for producing music. He signed as an independent producer with Columbia Records.

In November 1970, Columbia asked Jim to work with an unknown Kenny Loggins. While helping Kenny get ready for a record and touring, the two discovered that they worked well together and Jim agreed to sit in on Kenny’s first album. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In was released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was formed.

Over the next seven years, Loggins & Messina released eight hit albums, had scores of hit songs and sold over 16 million albums. They had become one of rock’s most successful recording duos ever, but it was time for the duo to go their separate ways.

After a series of celebrated solo acoustic tours, Jim formed a band made of acclaimed musicians who have played with him at various points in his career. His latest release, In the Groove, includes selected hits from all three of Jim’s previous bands, as well as several of his solo works.

Touring the country and playing sold-out shows, Jim says that he’s enjoying discovering who he is, where he’s been, and, most significantly, where he’s going.

A Celebration of Joni Mitchell featuring Kimberly Ford

by Gina Graham
July 15, 2019

A Celebration of Joni Mitchell featuring Kimberly Ford is a rocking tribute to the most iconic singer-songwriter of the Woodstock generation. Mitchell touched millions with her nearly 40-year career that spanned genres from contemporary folk to jazz to full-throated pop-rock. Hear this incredible seven-piece band, modeled on Joni’s tenure with Tom Scott & the L.A. Express, play all your favorite tunes, like Help Me, Conversation, Blue, River, All I Want, Free Man in Paris, Cary and, of course, Woodstock … The band also throws in a few you might not have heard before …

Ford and her band, A Celebration of Joni Mitchell, have been selling out rooms from Tucson to San Francisco’s wine country for six years with a rocking tribute to the most iconic singer-songwriter of the Woodstock generation.  Not a paint-by-numbers tribute band, Ford and Co. infuse Mitchell’s canon with new life while paying deep respect to a poet laureate of her generation’s songwriters.

Al Di Meola – PAST. PRESENT. FUTURE.

by Gina Graham
July 8, 2019

Al Di Meola’s ongoing fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony has been at the heart of his music throughout a celebrated career that has spanned four decades and earned him critical accolades, three gold albums, and more than six million in record sales worldwide. A bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll-winner, and prolific composer, he has amassed over 20 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty.

And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard fanatics who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola’s writing along with the soulfulness and the inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.

Tom Ball & Kenny Sultan

by Gina Graham
June 13, 2019

Although they both had been playing individually for years, Tom and Kenny met and began making music together 40 years ago when guesting on local radio KCSB.  After they had played a song, the station received a phone call offering them $15 and a pizza to come to play at the Sojourner.  They accepted – but only after holding out for free beer. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Flying Fish/Rounder recording artists have now been playing their unique blend of guitar and harmonica blues, rags, and good time music to widely diverse audiences for 40 years. Their live performances include concerts, clubs, and festivals all over the world.

Together and separately they have worked on countless film scores, TV soundtracks, commercials, and sessions. They’ve appeared on television internationally, have played for audiences of 300 million via Voice of America and are frequent guests of National Public Radio.  Between them, they have issued 14 CDs, 12 instructional books and several DVDs.  In addition to working with Kenny, Tom has played on over 260 CDs… and Kenny was recently honored by Martin Guitars with his own Signature Model 000-18KS. For more info, feel free to access tomballkennysultan.com.

Any musical act that can stick together 40 years is worth celebrating – but especially one that was born and nurtured here in Santa Barbara. In their long career, the boys have played every venue in town – from the smallest dive bar to the County Bowl – but our own Lobero Theater has always been their favorite. Come join the party!

by Genevieve Rhiger
June 11, 2019

Comedian Alex Reymundo emerged on the national scene on The Original Latin Kings of Comedy alongside Paul Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, George Lopez & Joey Medina and was featured in P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy. His hit one-hour specials Red-Nexican & ALMA Award-winning Hick-Spanic have aired on Showtime, Comedy Central & NETFLIX prove his appeal to a wide audience. Today, Reymundo can be seen across the nation touring alone or with ol’ friend & blue collar bad boy, Ron White.

Alex’s exposure to LIVE standup began in Arlington, TX in 1988. Reymundo proudly boasts about serving Ron White Tequila & a Budweiser right before he hit the stage on Tatersalad’s amateur comedy debut, and the two Texas comics traveled the nation together for the first few years of their early careers.

Five years of gigging throughout the Midwest led Reymundo to Los Angeles where he discovered an exploding Latino comedy scene. It wasn’t long before Alex was touring with Paul Rodriguez. The timing was right, and Alex made his film debut on The Original Latin Kings of Comedy, followed by the Bad Boys of Comedy showcase on HBO, and two one-hour comedy specials, Hick-Spanic & Red-Nexican. Reymundo was seen by 6 million viewers on CMT in 2011 in Ron White’s Salute to the Troops. His thirty year standup career has widened his skills in three films, Permanent Vacation, The Movement & El Matador, as well as voiceover work for many companies and Disney’s animated film, Cars.

British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor (b.1992) has been described as “the best pianist to come out of England in the last 50 years,” and “one of the world’s most sought-after young pianists.” One needs only to listen to him play to understand the accolades are well-deserved; his playing is reminiscent of legendary pianists that are long gone—Rachmaninoff, Schnabel, Rubinstein, Serkin. His promise was evident from a young age—the winner of the Keyboard Final of the 2004 BBC Young Musician Competition at the age of eleven, and at nineteen invited to perform with the BBC Symphony
Orchestra at the Opening Night of the 2011 BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The upcoming concert will mark his Santa Barbara recital debut.
