by Gina Graham
September 13, 2023

Join Santa Barbara Permaculture Network for a special evening with Rachel Ward as she shares her experience of coming to terms with the catastrophic fires & floods that beset Australia in recent years. The personal story-telling style of her film features intimate interviews with Rachel, her family, her inquisitive young farm manager who prompts them on a regenerative farm learning path, and all the people she has been inspired by on her transition from the world of entertainment to the world of farming.  With honesty, and even humor, the film gives a unique insight into her voyage from willful ignorance about the ecological impacts of conventional agriculture, to embracing a regenerative movement to restore the health of Australias farmland, food and climate.  Conversation & Q&A with Rachel follows.

Eco Hero Award 2024

by Gina Graham
August 31, 2023

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network celebrates its fourth Annual Eco Hero Award, honoring Albert K. Bates, Environmental Lawyer, Author, Right Livelihood Award recipient, UN Climate Conference Delegate, and Biochar Pioneer.

A perennial good-natured optimist, but hard-core realist, Albert Bates has been an advocate for the Earth and its ecosystems for over 50 years.

Like many of his generation, he gravitated towards living in an intentional community, joining The Farm ecovillage in Tennessee in 1972, after trekking (Thru-Hiking) north to south, the entire Appalachian Trail.  In his years at The Farm ecovillage, he learned many practical skills, working as a horse farmer, mason, solar technician, illustrator, typesetter, flour miller, riding instructor, mushroom grower, paramedic, councilman and schoolteacher.

Albert served on the executive board of Plenty-USA, a not for profit organization founded by members of The Farm, that put small water, energy, and health-care systems into underserved communities around the world.  In 1980, The Farm and Plenty were awarded the first Right Livelihood Award, sometimes called the alternative Nobel Peace prize, for “caring, sharing and acting with and on behalf of those in need at home and abroad.”  Plenty supports economic self-sufficiency, cultural integrity and environmental responsibility in partnership with community groups and organizations in Central America, the U.S., the Caribbean, and Africa.

With Plenty, Albert also founded the Natural Rights Center and launched a lawsuit to end atomic power on human rights grounds that went before twenty-two federal judges and four times to the United States Supreme Court.  Bates also challenged uranium mining in the Black Hills and the first strike MX Missile deployment in the Dakotas.  He also challenged a State law retroactively disenfranchising all felons, winning a State Supreme Court order that restored the right to vote to more than 200,000 citizens in Tennessee.

As a young lawyer, Albert defended rural Tennessee residents from some of the most dangerous toxins imaginable that were being dumped by agrochemical companies into the Knox Aquifer, a primary source of citizens drinking water.  Bringing in experts and showing statistically high cancer rates by county, he won a statewide ban on fracking and deep well injection.

While researching that case, Albert began a journey of learning about how climate change might affect water rights in the future, which led to his fifth book, Climate in Crisis: The Greenhouse Effect and What We Can Do (1990) with a foreword by Al Gore.  Shaken by all he learned, he retired from the practice of law, and as an antidote, took up forest mushroom farming with a mail-order catalog called Mushroompeople, also later discovering permaculture.

Later forays to the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon introduced him to terra preta (dark earth) and biochar, exploring biochar’s potential for mitigating climate change and improving soil quality where implemented.  Biochar is modeled after an ancient practice found in the Amazonian basin, where indigenous people used it with great success for centuries to create rich fertile soils, out of their typically thin infertile tropical soils.

In 1994, Bates founded the Farm Ecovillage Training Center and in 1995 co-founded the Global Ecovillage Network.  Both were outshoots of the Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology, a nonprofit scientific research, development and demonstration organization, with projects on six continents including resettling Ukrainian refugees with the Green Road project, and regaining food sovereignty for Palestine. He has taught hundreds of courses in permaculture, natural building, ecovillage design, and climate solutions in more than 60 countries, including training certified permaculture instructors in China and Cuba.

Albert has been an ongoing delegate to the United Nations Climate Conferences (COP), representing the Global Ecovillage Network, ProNatura, and the International Biochar Initiative.

Albert is the prolific author of more than 20 books including Climate in Crisis; The Paris Agreement; The Biochar Solution; Transforming Plastics; The Dark Side of the Ocean; Plagued; and coauthor with Kathleen Draper of Burn: Igniting a New Carbon Drawdown Economy to End the Climate Crisis (in German as Cool Down). His latest book is Retropopulationism: Clawing Back a Stable Planet from Eight Billion and Change (2023).

Albert will be attending the International Biochar Conference in Sacramento, CA in February 2024.

The Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award honors those individuals who have committed themselves to work in service of the planet and its inhabitants for more than thirty years, with actual solutions and concrete ways forward that benefit many, often on a global scale, while demonstrating pathways forward for future generations.  Past recipients of the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Eco Hero Award include John D. Liu; Paul Stamets & Louie Schwartzberg; and John & Nancy Jack Todd.   We are honored to have Albert Bates join us in person as the recipient for the 2024 Eco Hero Award.  A reception follows in the Lobero courtyard for all ticket holders.

Madeleine Peyroux

by Josh James
August 30, 2023

2023 finds the prolific musician continuing her world tour around the 2021 release of Careless Love Deluxe Anniversary Edition. Madeleine’s 1996 breakthrough album Dreamland sold a striking 200,000 copies and her dusky voice was likened to that of Jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Dreamland cemented Peyroux as a ‘classic’ musical talent that was here to stay, and the soulful singer found herself touring the world, singing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and opening for Cesaria Evora.

Thirty years after her formative busking days in Paris, she is an accomplished performer with sell out worldwide tours, the proud curator of nine beguiling albums, and her countless accolades include the coveted BBC International Artist of The Year honor. Madeleine’s thirst for creative exploration is unfading and her willingness to face creative challenges remains as solid now as it was three decades ago. With endearing passion and great curiosity, the unstoppable genre-defying virtuoso continues her search for the good and examines life with the treasured William Congreve belief that music has charms to soothe the savage beast.

Warren Miller 2023

by Gina Graham
August 17, 2023

Warren Miller’s ALL TIME is bringing seventy-four years of filmmaking reimagined to a theater near you this fall. And this season, it’s all about good turns and good snow on good hills with good people.  Narrated by Jonny Moseley, ALL TIME dives deep into elements that Warren himself first identified as the stuff of which snowy dreams are made. From the birth of ski towns like Sun Valley and Aspen to icons and innovators like the original hotdoggers, the film brings the best of seven decades along with humor and inspiration from today—featuring Maine’s finest athlete, Donny Pelletier, and the next generation of skiers and riders at Woodward Park City.

Less a documentary than a love letter, ALL TIME is a way to honor how, where, and with whom we’ve made ski and snowboard movies since Warren first picked up a camera in 1949.

Join us as we celebrate how snow sports have burrowed into our collective consciousness as an obsession and a way of life. The two-year party for 75 seasons on snow starts October 2023. Visit warrenmiller.com to find a show near you.

Watchhouse

by Josh James
August 15, 2023

Over a year after Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz of Watchhouse (formerly known as Mandolin Orange) reintroduced themselves on their 2021 self-titled LP, the pair shared a special surprise release: Watchhouse (Duo), a self-produced recording of Marlin and Frantz performing the most elemental possible arrangements of all nine songs from Watchhouse. It’s a project that captures the fundamental power of Watchhouse: Two singers and musicians with profound chemistry, performing earnest yet masterfully crafted songs that encompass the unknowable mysteries, existential heartbreak, and communal joys of modern life.

Starting over a decade ago playing coffee shops and local restaurants around North Carolina, Watchhouse is a grassroots success story that’s been driven by Marlin’s poignant songwriting. They’ve sold out iconic venues (Red Rocks, Ryman Auditorium) and attract hundreds of millions of streams while producing exploratory music that “redefines roots music for a younger generation” (Washington Post).

2022 was filled with many endeavors including the American Acoustic Tour with Punch Brothers, headlining shows across the US, collaborating with Planet Bluegrass on Mabon, an autumn equinox concert series, and of course Watchhouse (Duo). In 2023, Marlin and Frantz will celebrate the release of Watchhouse (Duo) with a short run of shows that will feature just the two of them, harkening back to their earliest days of performing.

With deep roots in the midwest heartland, Humbird fuses experimental folk and environmental Americana genres. Siri Undlin, the songwriter behind the moniker, forges an explorative embodiment of the narrative folk song and balladry tradition for these modern times, inviting a whole host of collaborators and listeners to add and expand the music. Since returning to the road, Undlin and her bandmates have toured full-time across the US, UK and Ireland.

“Siri Undlin’s crystalline voice is thoroughly enchanting…an absolutely hypnotic listening experience.” — Folk Alley
