Preservation Work Begins and the Lobero Theatre Foundation Thanks Donors, Volunteers and the Community

The Lobero Theatre Foundation is thrilled to announce that Encore: Lobero preservation work has begun at the Lobero Theatre. After two and a half years of fundraising, planning, expert review and permitting, the beloved Lobero theatre will now get some needed TLC.

“The Lobero owes a debt of gratitude to so many. To our very generous patrons and the people who faithfully attend Lobero shows. And to our staff and Board of Directors who serve with compassion and an inspiring sense of responsibility. And also to the historical, architectural, engineering, and planning experts who helped us preserve historic and architectural integrity while enhancing performance and audience comfort aspects so the theater remains viable.  We extend our heartfelt thanks.”
– Lobero Theatre Foundation Board President Jeff DeVine

During the week of June 3, the Encore: Lobero preservation work officially kicks off with the removal of original entry bricks, which will be stored, protected and then reused on the reconstructed entry way. The scope of work over the next six months includes new seats, ceiling preservation, interior painting, improved air flow, expanded restrooms, ADA compliance upgrades and other elements to make the theatre viable for live performances for many years to come.

The Bad Plus & Ojai Music Festival

by Cecilia Martini-Muth
May 30, 2013

Adventurous jazz listeners know the basic math involved in this equation:  tickets to see The Bad Plus = a great time.

Jazz’s favorite bad boys, The Bad Plus, heads back to the area to take the stage at Ojai’s Libbey Bowl next weekend to open the Ojai Music Festival on June 6. Along with works from their own collection, they’ll take on Stravinsky’s iconic “Rite of Spring” (check out the full festival preview from the Independent for more).

I’m eager to sing their praises after their recent Jazz at the Lobero season-closing performance at the Lobero with the Brad Mehldau Trio. These guys bring a ton of creativity in their instrumentation, and catchy odd-meter time signatures (Check out “Seven Minute Mind“). It’s clear that each musical choice is thoughtfully selected and balanced by the other members of the band.

Its these subtleties combined with their incredible musicianship that should serve Stravinsky’s vast score most. I mean, this is a band that clearly has a talent for uncovering the improvisational possibilities, remember their cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit“? Imagine what will they be able to do with one of the defining works in 20th century classical music.

See you in Ojai–

Encore: Lobero
Preserving and Enhancing California’s Oldest Theatre

May 23, 2013

We’re putting on our hard hats and getting to work on Encore: Lobero!

You may have noticed some wear-and-tear throughout the building. This theatre has been well-loved, and well-used for 89 years.

The Lobero Theatre is ready for a second act, with the heavy lifting beginning on June 3. We’re going to replace the seats in the auditorium, upgrade heating and air conditioning systems, nearly double the size of both restrooms and bring the theatre up to meet modern accessibility codes with a safe and welcoming entrance. More at LovetheLobero.com.

While the Box Office will be closed, the Lobero Theatre Foundation is happy to answer any questions by calling 805-966-4946.

Stay tuned to this blog over the summer, where we’ll be chronicling the construction through photos, and gearing up for our 2013-2014 Encore Season. We’re keeping up with our Facebook and Twitter accounts too, so if you haven’t already please “Like” us and “Follow” along. (Pro tip: This is one of our favorite places to give out exclusive pre-sale codes and discounts.)

Stay tuned, and thanks for joining us here.
