Michael McDonald – Youth Interactive Benefit

by Genevieve Rhiger
June 3, 2015

MICHAEL MCDONALD

A five-time grammy award winner, Michael McDonald began his career singing back-up vocals with Steely Dan. He was a member of The Doobie Brothers from 1976 to 1982 and recorded some of the band’s best-known songs such as “Takin’ It to the Streets”, “It Keeps You Runnin'”, “Minute by Minute” and “What a Fool Believes” (a number one single in the U.S.)

McDonald released his first solo album, If That’s What It Takes, in 1982 and featured the hit “I Gotta Try,” a song co-written with Kenny Loggins. His duet “Yah Mo B There” with James Ingram won the 1985 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo. “On My Own”, a duet with Patti LaBelle, reached #1 on the U.S. charts in 1986. In 2000, McDonald, along with partners Chris Pelonis and actor Jeff Bridges, founded the independent recording label Ramp Records. In 2003, he earned two Grammy nominations for his album Motown, a tribute to the Motown sound.

In 2008 McDonald released his SoulSpeak album, featuring his interpretations of 11 soul-inspired songs. In the summer of 2010, he began a tour with Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs, known as The Dukes of September Rhythm Revue. This year, McDonald appeared on the finals of American Idol and is touring throughout the country. Michael and his wife Amy are residents of Santa Barbara.

AMBROSIA

In the year 1970, four young musicians from the South Bay of Los Angeles, came together to create a new invigorating style of music. Exploring the possibilities of progressive, classical and world influences, yet rooted with the soul of the blues and R&B, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North, David Pack and Burleigh Drummond created a new sound that was defined and recognized as “Ambrosia”. Originally labeled as America’s answer to the progressive invasion of such English acts as “Yes” and “King Crimson”, the group quickly proved it was all that and much more as it’s albums painted aural landscapes covering the gamut of musical styles and attracting the collaboration of such cultural icons as, Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Alan Parsons. In it’s brief recording history, Ambrosia garnered 5 Grammy Nominations, 5 Hit Singles, Heavy FM Airplay and the admiration and respect of the musical community.

Fall Jazz – Tierney Sutton

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 27, 2015

December marks the 100th birthday of the Chairman of the Board. The Tierney Sutton Band will celebrate by taking Sinatra classics on an adventure ride.

Five-time GRAMMY® nominee Tierney Sutton is often described as “a singer’s singer”, but just as often, she is described as a “musician’s singer”, who uses her voice like an instrument. She has fronted the Tierney Sutton Band for 20 years, and their nine albums have consistently topped the US jazz charts, leading to Ms. Sutton’ selection as Jazzweek’s Vocalist of the Year and several Jazz Journalist Award nominations. She has headlined at Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, The Kennedy Center and Jazz At Lincoln Center, and more.

Fall Jazz – Dorado Schmitt

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 27, 2015

Back by popular demand! Gypsy jazz genius Dorado Schmitt and his all-star ensemble return for an encore performance celebrating the legacy of Django Reinhardt.

No one has done more to ignite interest in the legacy of gypsy jazz guitar pioneer Django Reinhardt than dazzling French guitarist and violinist Dorado Schmitt. Born to Gypsy parents near the German border, Schmitt was weaned on traditional Roma music and Gypsy jazz, but rebelled as a teenager by taking up electric guitar and emulating Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. By the mid-90’s he was a leading figure on the international Gypsy jazz scene, where he continues to represent the art form at its highest level.

Fresh off this year’s Django Reinhardt Festival, and joining Dorado Schmitt once again are Amati Schmitt (lead guitar) and DouDou Cuillerier (rhythm guitar and scat vocals), Pierre Blanchard (violin), Ludovic Beier (button accordion), Xavier Nikq (bass), and special guest pianist, Roger Kellaway.

“The elder Schmitt’s virtuosity…on full display…lightening fast finger work, powerful strumming, astonishing fast tempos.” – LA Times

“Best show in town!” – Wall Street Journal

Fall Jazz – Esperanza Spalding

by Genevieve Rhiger
May 27, 2015

GRAMMY® award-winning singer-composer-bassist Esperanza (Emily) Spalding has announced her newest project, Emily’s D+Evolution.  Rekindling her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement, this new project delves into a broader concept of performance. Originally conceived the day before her birthday, during a “sleepless night of full moon inspiration”, Emily’s D+Evolution will be performing all new material that Esperanza says, “Unfolds as live musical vignettes.”

“Emily is my middle name, and I’m using this fresh persona as my inner navigator.  This project is about going back and reclaiming un-cultivated curiosity, and using it as a compass to move forward and expand.” says Spalding. “My hope for this group is to create a world around each song, there are a lot of juicy themes and stories in the music. We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies.”

MISCHA MAISKY (b.1948) has the distinction of being the only cellist in the world to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky. Rostropovich lauded Maisky as “one of the most outstanding talents of the younger generation of cellists. His playing combines poetry and exquisite delicacy with great temperament and brilliant technique.” Born in Latvia, educated in Russia, after being imprisoned in a labor camp near Gorky for 18 months in 1970, he emigrated from the USSR to Israel.

Maisky’s recordings have enjoyed worldwide acclaim and have been awarded five times the prestigious Record Academy Prize in Tokyo, three times Echo Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, Grand Prix du Disque in Paris, and the Diapason d’Or of the Year.

Daughter LILY MAISKY was born in Paris in 1987, moving to Brussels soon after. She began playing the piano at the age of four. Lily features on several Deutsche Grammophon and EMI recording releases, and has been frequently broadcast on European and Asian radio and television.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata No.28 in A Major, Op.101

“Jean-Efflam Bavouzet is among the most generous and indefatigable of performers” — The Guardian
“Bavouzet sustained a perfect balance between introspection and flash, bridging vast dynamic and tempo extremes without mannerism or eccentricity.” — Financial Times
“Apart from his phenomenal but understated technique, Bavouzet has in addition an extraordinary ability to seem to be directing his own performances, as though he’s providing a presence outside himself, and it goes some way to explaining the fierce passion, remarkable intelligence and free-wheeling creativity of his transcendent playing.” — Classical Source

Following his sparkling performance last season with the London Philharmonic, the multi-award-winning pianist JEAN-EFFLAM BAVOUZET returns in solo recital. Bavouzet is active worldwide as recitalist, concerto soloist and recording artist, winning Gramophone awards for his recording of concertos by Debussy and Ravel, and for his fourth volume of Debussy’s Complete Works for Piano. Milk Carton Kids

by Genevieve Rhiger
April 29, 2015

GRAMMY®-nominated harmony duo The Milk Carton Kids return to the Lobero Theatre in support of the May 19, 2015 release of their third album, Monterey, two years since the release of their last album, The Ash & Clay.

The Milk Carton Kids won Duo/Group of the Year at the Americana Music Awards, and were featured in T Bone Burnett & the Coen Brothers’ concert documentary, “Another Day/Another Time,” quickly selling out their American tour last year.

Cultural purveyors from Garrison Keillor to T Bone Burnett to Billy Bragg have hailed the duo’s importance among a group of new folk bands, both expanding and contradicting the rich tradition that precedes them. Yet while some of the band’s many accolades reference a specific genre, the duo quickly transcends those tags with clear inflections of jazz, classical, even the dark lyricism of modern “alternative.”

Joe Pug

joepug-hires-91_press

Austin, TX singer songwriter Joe Pug has made a habit of defying expectations and is quite comfortable stepping outside of the guy-with-a-guitar trappings of the genre. He has collected plenty of the requisite Dylan comparisons over his young career but on this record it’s easier to hear the sway of more contemporary influences like Josh Ritter, Ryan Adams and M.Ward.
