Hot Jazz harkens back to the 30’s and 40’s in Europe where Django Reinhardt teamed with top jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli to create The Hot Club Quintette of France–the greatest musical partnership in European history Jazz history. The Django Festival All-Stars follow in their footsteps taking the music beyond with original compositions, hip improvisations and more.
This hot-swing form of jazz has its roots in American popular music in the reverence for Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and other top American jazz figures of the time. Each of the All-Stars are composers in their own right and while this music can harken back to the great music of the past, their interpretations, arrangements, virtuosity, and original compositions bring a newness to Django’s style and take it beyond.
The Django Festival All-Stars are the best players to come out of the Django Reinhardt Festival and are led by legendary gypsy guitarist/violinist Dorado Schmitt. These world-class musicians hail mostly from France, and frequently headline The Django Reinhardt Festival at the legendary music club Birdland in New York City, and tours prestigious halls across the country such as Rose Hall/Jazz at Lincoln Center, Disney Hall, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, The San Francisco Festival, and many more.

The Christmas Revels: An Irish Celebration of the Winter Solstice is a joyous theatrical production celebrating the spirit and strength of the Irish emigrants who came to America in the early 1900’s to build new lives in a new land. At sea over the holidays, these strangers bond over spinning stories, singing songs, and sharing seasonal traditions; friendships are formed, romance blossoms.
Our Revels company is joined by accomplished guest artists, including award-winning actors and Irish dancers as well as vocal soloists, a brass ensemble and a string and wind quintet. Legendary artist Graham Nash is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee – with Crosby, Stills, and Nash and with the Hollies. He was also inducted twice into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, as a solo artist and with CSN, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner.
Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career, stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of the past half-century. His remarkable body of work, beginning with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68, including “Stop Stop Stop,” “Pay You Back With Interest,” “On A Carousel,” “Carrie Anne,” “King Midas In Reverse,” and “Jennifer Eccles,” continues all the way to This Path Tonight (2016), his most recent solo album.

When a full concert, performed by David Bowie’s long-time composer and pianist, Mike Garson, combines with the expertise of healthcare advocate, Candy Hammeras, the result is an evening of education, entertainment and emotion. Enjoy an eclectic mix of Bowie classics and Mike Garson originals along with the incredible Grammy award-winning singer Gaby Moreno and Joe Sumner. A journey not to be missed as this unique event; “Cancer: The Urgency of Now” comes to Santa Barbara.
MIKE GARSON
Perhaps best known as Bowie’s piano man, Mike performed with David for dozens of albums and 1,000 concerts around the globe as his longest and most frequent band member. Mike’s solid reputation for creativity and quality has brought about collaborations with others including Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, and many more.
GABY MORENO
Since moving to Los Angeles from her native Guatemala, singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno has achieved remarkable success as a musician. She has been nominated for an Emmy and won a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. She has released four albums, toured with singers Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, Punch Brothers, Hugh Laurie and Calexico, and has shared the international stage with pop music luminaries such as Bono, Andrea Boccelli and Van Dyke Parks.
In 2006, her song, “Escondidos,” took the top prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, the first contestant in the Latin category to win Song of the Year. Moreno’s career started moving quickly. She co-wrote the theme song of the television series “Parks and Recreation,” which was nominated for an Emmy in 2010. That same year, she recorded the classic song “Smile,” by Charlie Chaplin, for the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove.” And she performed “Toast to Freedom,” a song commemorating the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International, first with Kris Kristofferson on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, then in Dublin where she shared the stage with Angelique Kidjo and Bono.
JOE SUMNER
Joe Sumner is a singer-songwriter and bassist for the rock band Fiction Plane. Sumner learned to play guitar and drums when he was a teenager, and was inspired to write songs when he heard Nirvana’s album Nevermind. An accomplished musician, Sumner toured with his father Sting on the massively successful 57th and 9th world tour.
MAYSSA KARAA
With her captivating multi-octave voice and persuasive cross-cultural message, vocalist and songwriter Mayssa Karaa defines a new era of musical inclusion. Her songs tell of a journey connecting her origins in the ancient land of Lebanon to her adopted home of Los Angeles, California. Cinema audiences might identify the classically-trained singer’s voice from the hit film American Hustle, where her Arabic version of the Sixties classic “White Rabbit” was a standout track on the Grammy-nominated soundtrack album; MAYSSA is at currently putting the finishing touches on her full-length English solo debut. The songs range from piano based simplicity to epic electronic orchestration with a unique blend of American pop and middle eastern influences.
With music as her passport, she says that it was never an intention to come to the U.S. and live inside of a bubble. “I came here to expand, to tell others about my culture and learn about theirs. I was born and raised in Lebanon, but I am very much an American too. I’m like you.

This concert is a joint fundraising effort between the Boy Scouts of America, Los Padres Council and Santa Barbara Music Events to benefit the reconstruction of Rancho Alegre which was destroyed in the recent fires near Lake Cachuma.
Enter a world where dreaming takes flight in this collaborative dance exploration featuring guest performances by Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Dance, Santa Barbara Dance Theater, alongside new Nebula works by Meredith Cabaniss & Indy award-winning choreographer Shelby Lynn Joyce. Alice’s wondrous world will return to the Lobero stage in Nebula’s evening-length work Through the Looking Glass with choreography by Meredith Cabaniss, featuring Devyn Duex, and Karyn Laver. Live musical accompaniment composed and directed by Adam Phillips of the Folk Orchestra of Santa Barbara, and compelling visual artistry.

Since his triumph at the 1970 Chopin Piano Competition, Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as one of the great American piano masters of the past 50 years, a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. Though long regarded as a leading exponent of the music of Frédéric Chopin, he commands an enormous repertoire, including more than 80 concertos ranging from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st Century. He returns to the Lobero for an all-Brahms recital on the heels of his virtuosic March 2017 performance for CAMA of the Brahms Piano Concerto No.2 with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.

The latest Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra multi-media musical offering Tales of Two Cities: The Leipzig-Damascus Coffee Houseilluminates each city’s striking features in common: both enjoyed a lively tradition of coffee houses in which the finest musicians of the city performed and both were also famous centers of scholarship and learning.
