CAMA 22/23 – Hélène Grimaud

by Gina Graham
June 17, 2022

French pianist Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted. Her poetic expression and peerless technical control have drawn comparisons to Martha Argerich and Jorge Bolet. Her contribution to and impact on the world of classical music were recognized by the French government with admission to the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest decoration) at the rank of Chevalier (Knight). In her role as a passionate wildlife conservationist, Grimaud established the Wolf Conservation Center in upper New York State, which offers education about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future.

The Wallflowers

by Josh James
June 14, 2022

For the past 30 years, The Wallflowers have held their ground as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. Exit Wounds, the group’s latest studio offering, marks the first new material since Glad All Over. And while the wait has been long, the much-anticipated record finds the GRAMMY® Award winning band’s signature sound – lean, potent and eminently entrancing – intact, even as Jakob Dylan surrounds himself with a fresh cast of musicians.

Omar Velasco

Singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Omar Velasco’s music draws from a broad range of influences. He pays homage to the greats of the past — like Stevie Wonder, Shuggie Otis, Joni Mitchell and Milton Nascimento — while avoiding the triviality of nostalgia. His sound encompasses the richness of music from around the world, across era and genre, delivering depth and diversity while maintaining clarity and poignancy. Omar’s productions possess a transcendent quality that transports the listener to distant and beautiful landscapes, while the lyrics anchor the song in simple, heartfelt poetic ground. With roots in Santa Barbara but now based in Los Angeles, Omar has toured and collaborated with artists such as Jonathan Wilson, Jim James and My Morning Jacket, Gardens and Villa and many others.

Suzanne Vega

by Josh James
June 14, 2022

Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion, Vega’s distinctive, “clear, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career.

Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times), Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, her work is immediately recognizable — as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago.

Leo Kottke

by Josh James
June 8, 2022

Famed solo acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. The artist overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. When he picks up a steel-stringed guitar, his fingers race across the strings with uncommon speed, developing a deep, churning groove that can at times sound like several people playing at once.

Now 76-years-young, Kottke has recorded over 30 albums that showcase his barnstorming fretwork and quirky songwriting. In concert, playing his six and 12-stringed guitars for appreciative audiences across the globe, he intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career. Kottke is a master of the guitar, whose playing has influenced generations of musicians and listeners.

Tab Benoit

by Josh James
June 7, 2022

Tab Benoit is a GRAMMY® nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist who has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way – as well as 5 Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He has recorded and/or performed with Junior Wells, George Porter Jr, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Billy Joe Shaver, Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, Cyril Neville, Kenny Aronoff, Allen Toussaint, Kim Wilson, Jimmy Thackery, Charlie Musslewhite, Kenny Neal, Chris Layton, Ivan Neville, Jimmy Hall, Jim Lauderdale, Anders Osborne, and Alvin Youngblood Hart to name a few.

Tab’s accomplishments as a musician are matched only by his devotion to the environmental health of his native Louisiana wetlands. Benoit is the founder and driving force behind Voice of the Wetlands, an organization working to preserve the coastal waters of his home state. In 2010, he received the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. Benoit also starred in the iMax motion picture Hurricane on the Bayou, a documentary of Hurricane Katrina’s effects and a call to protect and restore the wetlands.

Nashville-based singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer JD Simo connects the missing link between Motown and Woodstock as he fuses fluid and fiery fretwork with vital and vulnerable vocals. JD has been acclaimed by Rolling Stone, NPR, Guitar Player, Relix, No Depression, and more. Logging hundreds of gigs annually, he has collaborated with Jack White, Tommy Emmanuel, Luther Dickinson and Blackberry Smoke among others. Not to mention, he graced the bills of festivals, including Bonnaroo, Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, and Mountain Jam. Phil Lesh, iconic co-founder of The Grateful Dead, invited him to join Phil Lesh and Friends. Meanwhile, JD’s 2019 solo album, Off At 11, incited fan fervor and tastemaker praise. Billboard claimed the record “channels forbearers such as Jimi Hendrix, Santana and the Allman Brothers Band,” and Guitar World dubbed it, “another step toward the 34-year-old Chicago native establishing himself as a contemporary blues rock giant.”

Daniel Howell

by Gina Graham
May 6, 2022

We’re All Doomed!

Daniel Howell is back, as stressed and depressingly dressed as ever, with his epic new solo comedy stage show “We’re All Doomed!”.

When there’s so many apocalyptic scenarios threatening to destroy us, it might be tempting to give into the gloom – but with enough sarcasm, satire, and a desire to skewer everything that’s wrong with society: Dan is determined to find some hope for humanity … or at least laugh like it’s the end of the world (because it probably is).

Prepare for a night of savage self-deprecation, soul-searching, Dan over-sharing his deepest fears and desires, and become part of a community of doomers to share the final days.
