Spring Jazz 2023 – Preservation Hall Jazz Band

by Josh James
September 28, 2022

From the heart of the French Quarter to the world’s stage, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has spread the joyful, timeless spirit of true New Orleans jazz since 1961. The band has featured a long cadre of legendary musicians over the years and issued a number of albums, all of which showcase the group’s rootsy, soulful brand of traditional New Orleans jazz. While standards and traditional New Orleans jazz repertoire remain their core focus, they’ve transformed into a vibrantly cross-pollinated ambassador for New Orleans, exploring original compositions, Afro-Cuban rhythms, R&B influences, and collaborating with artists beyond the jazz spectrum. The Preservation Jazz Band is now embarking on the nationwide tour Pass It On – 60th Anniversary Musical Celebration, commemorating six decades of the Hall’s well-worn, well-loved space that’s physically small, but spiritually huge. Current band members include Branden Lewis (trumpet), Clint Maedgen (saxophone), Kerry Lewis (bass), Kyle Roussel (piano), Revon Andrews (trombone), Glen Andrews (drums). Their mission remains focused on initiating audiences into the ineffable, almost religious experience of channeling their ancestors through the music and culture they’ve inherited from them.

Morgan Wade

by Gina Graham
September 26, 2022

Morgan Wade didn’t write to be a sensation, for critical acclaim or massive concert tours. She wrote to speak her truth, to save her own life – and perhaps throw a rope to others struggling with the weight of a world moving too fast, loves where you fall too hard and nights that, good or bad, seem to go on forever. A Blue Ridge Mountain girl willing to put her whole truth out there as an artist without flinching – and as a performer who gives it all away onstage – Wade has a voice The FADER lauds is “like a jagged blade, sharp enough to draw blood but lustrous under the light” while The New York Times declares “she sounds like she’s singing from the depths of history.” The old soul writer understands chaos, compulsion and letting go in a way most people will never experience; with her songs, she brings listeners inside the rollercoaster ride of euphoria, emptiness and exile with a soft touch and deep truth. With her unabashed debut album Reckless, she landed on various Best Album and Songs of 2021 rankings from TIME, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Stereogum, The FADER, Tennessean, Boston Globe, and more. Produced by Jason Isbell + the 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden and Paul Ebersold, the trio worked to create a song cycle that pulled the lean rock of Tom Petty through a modern take on country — and achieved a No. 1 on SiriusXM The Highway’s Top 30 Countdown with debut single “Wilder Days.” Having reached radio’s Top 30 with the acoustic guitar-driven track, Reckless (Deluxe Edition), available now, expands the conversation with six additional tracks, including a scalding, heart beating read on Elvis’ Presley’s “Suspicious Minds” and desperate “The Night” – Wade’s first release. Having toured with Lucero last fall, she joins Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Brooks & Dunn, and more on the road throughout 2022.

Spring Jazz 2023 – Arturo Sandoval

by Josh James
September 23, 2022

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval has evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. The dynamic, vivacious performer has received 10 GRAMMY® Awards, 6 Billboard Awards, and an Emmy Award. Sandoval is also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from University of Notre-Dame.

In 2022, the Cuban maestro released his newest album Rhythm & Soul to rave reviews! The “Rhythm” is represented by a collection of new originals that draw on Arturo’s wealth of experience and encyclopedic knowledge in all forms of Latin music, from traditional Cuban Son to Brazilian Bossa-Nova and Samba to Caribbean Soca. The “Soul” is what comes from his horn. This album showcases Arturo as a player in many forms – from fiery to sensitive. Musicians and fans alike rightly marvel at his technical ability on the horn – the effortless high notes and the dizzying speed and execution of his improvised runs. He truly is one of the most beautiful ballad players around, and both sides of his soul are well represented here.

“Born into poverty in Cuba and held back by his government, he risked everything to share his gifts with the world. In the decades since, this astonishing trumpeter, pianist and composer has inspired audiences in every corner of the world and awakened a new generation of great performers. He remains one of the best ever to play.” – President Barack Obama

“Arguably the most prodigious trumpeter of his generation, a showman to the tips of his toes… imperiously and dashingly in charge of the resources of his trumpet.” – The Guardian

Elton Dan’s rapport and stage presence is second to none and his magical piano playing has a way of engaging you in the full ELTON experience. Before you know it, you’re captivated by his incredible band including backup singers, and thrilled with the over the top costumes and high energy performances just like ELTON in days past. Elton Dan has performed for gatherings of 8,000 plus but gives each listener the feeling that they are sharing the intimate emotions of the much loved music with just them. For more information, check out Elton Dan on Facebook.

ELTON DAN

Dan has been playing the piano since he was 10 years old. His first concert he attended was the Orange County Symphony, but the concert that made him decide to play music was seeing Elton John live at Caesar’s Palace and  Paul McCartney at Arrowhead Stadium. From childhood, Dan’s hero in music was Elton John for both the wonderful music he made and the humanitarian contributions the band honored. Dan has persisted in keeping the same traditions in the band he created to honor his music hero Elton John and the legacy and culture of what the Elton John Band stands for.

Today, Elton Dan and the Rocket Band play songs from seven of the Elton John albums, including the epic hit songs – “Saturday Night’s Alright”, “Daniel”, “Your Song”, “I’m Still Standing”, “Bennie and the Jets”, “Tiny Dancer” as well rotating a few treasured album cuts – “Levon“, “Sweet Painted Lady”, “Honky Cat” and “Funeral for a Friend.”  They rehearse weekly.. Dan has seen Elton John in concert 14 times including Sir Elton’s final US Performance at Dodgers Stadium 11/20/22 to honor the rock legend.

Andrew Duhon and Haley Johnsen

by Josh James
September 2, 2022

Andrew Duhon

Andrew Duhon is a songwriter from New Orleans whose ability to craft a 3-minute novel has earned him comparisons to John Prine and Jim Croce, while the powerful soul of his voice evokes a youthful Van Morrison. He has toured solo for much of his career, and that troubadour element is certainly present – an usher of modern-day folklore. Duhon’s 2014 release, The Moorings, was nominated for a GRAMMY® for ‘Best Engineered Album.’ His 2018 record, False River, produced by Eric Masse, was described by American Songwriter as “fresh, innovative, and complicated in all the right ways.”

During the quarantine, Duhon wrote and shared twenty-two new songs as a Quarantine Song video series, and twenty+ more exclusively on his Patreon site. His new album, Emerald Blue, features eleven of those songs, and was released in July 2022. The record examines the familiar in the context of the unfamiliar – a probing appreciation of the dailiness of life; a note-taking exercise in living. Emerald Blue shows us the vast worlds that can be discovered and traveled when we sit still, and the breathtaking vistas on view when we look within — or at the people right beside us.

Duhon is “a teller of stories with an undeniable voice, weighted and soulful.” – KPCW/NPR

“Duhon brings the craft of a master short story writer to his songs and in doing so creates a series of skillfully rendered vignettes.” — The LA Beat

Haley Johnsen

Haley Johnsen is a Portland, Oregon-born musician with a knack for genre-bending and a hard-earned career path that is uniquely her own. Raised listening to powerhouse singers such as Brandi Carlile, Grace Potter, and Annie Lennox, her greatest inspirations become apparent in her soaring vocals, introspective lyricism, and cross-pollinated style of indie-pop, and bluesy folk-rock music. Whether her songs muse on the aches of self-doubt, the joy that can accompany nostalgia, or simply trying to stay afloat in tough times, her bona fide songwriting combined with her performance ability is bound to evoke an emotional response.

Her 2015 debut EP, Through the Blue, was followed up with her second EP, When You Lit The Sky, in 2017, along with a handful of singles and national tours. It was through her critically acclaimed 12-track debut album, Golden Days, where she gained much deserved recognition and ignited the interest of Allen Stone, who appeared on the album. Later that year, Haley began touring with the power-trio sister-band Joseph and with EDM/Indie pop artist Big Wild, who she currently works with as a bassist and back-up vocalist. During her first European tour in 2019, Haley was further granted the opportunity to record an acoustic album entitled London Sessions at the Legendary Abbey Road. Her highly anticipated 2021 single “Goner,” which features honey-dipped vocals, breezy guitars, and sweeping 70s inspired folk rock soundscapes, is a sun-drenched melancholic daydream. The single marks the first off of her upcoming full length that promises to be “quirky, dramatic, soft, somber, eclectic, and energetic.” Kinda like Haley Johnsen.

Django Festival Allstars

by Josh James
September 2, 2022

The Django Festival Allstars bring the music of legendary Gypsy Jazz Guitarist Django Reinhardt fully into the 21st century. Their unique, high-energy performances pay tribute to Reinhardt, who is considered one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Reinhardt’s driving, swinging style became known as “hot jazz” and it continues to grow in popularity throughout the world – in great part to the success of The Django Festival Allstars, who honor the traditions of this “gypsy jazz,” adding their own interpretations, arrangements, and original compositions with stunning virtuosity.

Django was “king.” His unmistakable cool and jumpin’ joie de vivre made him an icon for an unlikely range of luminaries from Carlos Santana to Eric Clapton. Jimi Hendrix named his “big band of gypsies” in tribute, and Willie Nelson adopted his influence in “country-swing.” He teamed with jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli and made musical history. The music speaks of Paris in the 20s and 30s, when guitar music filled the air – in the cafés, the streets, the countryside, a time of Montmartre, la belle époque, café au lait, and a great glass of wine. The Django Festival Allstars have grown into a brilliantly cohesive group of star musicians who’ve taken America by storm, performing at Carnegie Hall and festivals to standing ovations.

Pierre Blanchard – Violin
